just to piggyback off of what Coney was saying at 15:10, I think the storyline building in Melee was the biggest advantage it had over other games for a long time. For YEARS, they had the storyline of the "5 gods" (Mango, Armada, Hbox, M2k, PPMD) and I think that storyline was great because even if you only played smash, or were just casually started watching tournaments, you could literally see those 5 players played the game differently and there was a clear skill gap from those 5 and everyone else. Then, after the 5 god storyline was going for a while, a new storyline was created. "Who can take down the 5 gods?". We had players like Leffen and Plup who everyone could see were slowly gaining ground, slowly inching their way up the ladder and getting closer and closer to the skill level of the 5 gods. It's like a story where someone keeps getting so close but keeps getting knocked down until they finally beat their rival and win. At that point everyone is happy they finally were able to accomplish that feat. The only time I think Melee was in a bad spot was in the later 2010s where some of the gods were leaving the scene. Thankfully slippi came out and some new life was breathed into the game, but it was definitely a low point in the game at that time.

There's so much in common between melee and Guilty Gear Accent core acpr. There was a rollback update and a resurgence back during COVID. All kinds of players got into the game, and while the top of the tier list barely change, we saw a few characters considered low/mid tier win stuff and shake things off. Both games are technical and both have brought back old heads and new ppl in their early 20ies. I think a big part of the "I don't want to play against low tiers" that's missing is that the *reason* low tiers are bad is because they can't approach. They don't have the tools to beat crouch cancel, they don't have anything safe they can throw out. So anyone who is good with a low tier is just waiting for you to run into their moves, and it's not fun to play against at all. Sure, I COULD spend 6 minutes slowly chipping away at you, or I could just not do that. Also there's Luigi. Fuck Luigi.
@smoceany94784 ай бұрын
even if you hate most low tiers i really recommend playing against G&W, G&W's problems arent his approach or his punish or anything like that, his issues are that he gets hit like hell and dies instantly, it makes for a game that really plays like a high or top tier matchup even when one character is clearly better

I feel like this happens with a lot of traditional fighting games as well. Older players move on or just don't spend as much time on the game and now the players that have either been playing forever but not at that level or who are new but have the time and access to all of the information gathered over 20 years are able to see better results. I've noticed it in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, where character specialists have been able to do incredibly well with characters that aren't top 5 simply because they have everything optimized and figured out. It's so interesting to watch.

Street Fighter 6 & Tekken 8 got great reviews when they came out and have mostly done well to maintain their popularity. Tekken has embraced the model of marketing via famous content creators in NA, and SF6 has done the same in Japan (where it competes with Apex & Valorant in terms of stream numbers). Smash just doesn't have anything like that atm. There's also something to be said for Smash never finding its own Chipotle and relying on shady crypto startups for sponsorships, given how that bubble burst over the past year or two...

The smash community being called rudderless honestly isn’t far enough it feels like we’re on hundreds of tiny boats all connected with only a few people being tos and top players with paddles and the only choice we have is which players we join and who we cut the rope with to make our ideal community. It was all good until the whole panda global vgbc fiasco it felt like we were reaching a golden age of smash but now (through circumstances that you can debate on yourself) we’ve been knocked back like 15 years. The major regions of smash (north America, Latin America, Europe and japan) used to feel more united melee and ultimate finally seemed to be united together there was respect and happiness and like money was starting to exist (and you know mods were being slipped in without Nintendo caring). Unfortunately I feel we learnt the wrong lessons from the end of the golden age now everybody seems to be in it for themselves all just trying to seem as safe as possible cause the blame game is all that’s going on right now in the community and it just shows we’re going in the wrong direction. Instead of all the commentators tos and top players uniting and planning on where to go (you’re kind of an exception to that coney) they all cut ties with people and try their hardest to win the insuring war that’s going on.

I mean. Sometimes no patches are requiered. Look at karnov's revenge. The top tier is really top tier. The lows are low. But. Exactly like in melee the top tiers are fun to play against. So people play other character and don't rage. While a game like brawl would have really needzd the ultimate path treatment. Where agregious stuff Is patched (well. Sonic went through and dlc pass 2 was too late) and bad character get a few number buffs. Just so that the characters stay close enouth that most of the cast is viable to have fun with and expect to win locals against good players. You can also make it look back so hard. Where everyone is so fucking broken. That except some unavoidable shit. You really only need one move to win even with a low tier like on the fist of the north star game.

I see some people use an XBOX controller that play pretty well in slippi, but it doesnt feel natural to me. Kind of how moving to 120-240hz monitors it took me a while to transition because nothing felt like an crt. I found some N64 controllers in my closet I wonder if theres a need for them.

8:37 I see some of these characters played on slippi but most aren't played because they're just too bad. Mr. Game & Watch is a decent character, Mewtwo is underrated because he's hard to learn how to play properly. Roy and Mario just have objectively better versions with Doc and Marth and Zelda is just why play her when you can play Shiek. Pichu is the same deal, Pichu hurts herself when performing electric moves and is one of the lightest characters so just play Pikachu. And then we get to the really bad characters, Ness is barely decent and is usually played by players that are really good at the game and want a challenge. Kirby is really weak, has terrible moves, grabs and recovery and Bowser is very slow and has a lot of lag when performing a majority of his moves but I would still say bowser is better than kirby. I've played bowser a lot on slippi and he's not as bad as people think he is, Bowser is still unbelievably trash but his moves hit super hard and a majority of his moves take stocks above 100%. Couple that with the fact not a lot of players know what bowser can do when played well and you can have a fun time just messing around. Just for anyone thats read this remember to try to play more defensively, you need to punish bad approaches as Bowser to do well and try to figure out which moves are fastish and which moves are too laggy and try to avoid using the very laggy moves.
