The amount of work to make the entire knife especially all those little pieces by hand is incredible.

BD H, some of them are damn near impossible to find now. But I agree, it’s a fun series and you can get the whole set for less than half the price of an low priced David Yellowhorse or Painted Piny!

Great video and congrats on the collection! Can you please make a short video explaining differences between patterns that are similar (at least to me)? Examples are whittler vs. stockman (l understand that sometimes a whittler doesn’t have split back) and muskrat vs. moose.

I'm glad you enjoyed the collections and thank you for the suggestion about explaining different traditional patterns. I do have a few videos on traditional patterns that you might found helpful but I have not done what you have asked. I will try to remedy that in the near future. This link has most of my videos on that describe some traditional pattern knives: kzbin.info/aero/PLJLlvIi3Io4yN2OGgJZ4v_OZ6MAYEJfyP

Very colorful and pleasant to observe. Do you EDC any of these? What kind of steel is used for these? Thanks !
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
I have a couple duplicates in the series and I EDC them. The steel is the usual 440A found in most Rough Rider knives. (HRC=56-58) It's good enough for most everyday tasks. I'm looking to pick up another 5 inch toothpick as that is what I normally carry. I do occasionally carry the one in this group for special occasions.

The neck knife was unexpected! Very nice, shame about the doubles, I mean they half did a sowbelly, I have one with faux turq but not stoneworx.
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
The real shame about the doubles is they have other very popular patterns that they ignored! Why not a sowbelly!

I would like to see any other half hawk than the coal miner, I have mine in my pocket today and I think it's a great knife. A sowbelly stockman, a bow trapper and a three blade gunboat would also be excellent additions to the set. I would actually like any gunboat other than the MOP I have seen on eBay. You have a great collection there, thanks for sharing it.

Tobias there are a couple of 918's without the etching on ebay right now.

I've seen them pictured without the etch but when I've contacted the seller they either ignore my question or inform me that the picture is old and inform me not to worry the blade has the etch; as if I wanted the etch! LOL

If you live in the USA, I strongly urge you to consider SMKW.com. Rough Ryder is the house brand for Smoky Mountain Knife Works. They offer a terrific guarantee on their Rough Ryders. If you're own facebook consider joining the SMKWarmy group.

Congratulations on completing the set! Sounds like it was a multi year endeavor. And how do they make those elaborate knives for those prices?! They are very attractive and it's cool how they are all different from one another. Thumbs up!
@slick_slicers5 жыл бұрын
I’ve always thought them a bit gaudy, but you’re selling them to me! I’ve always wanted a large toothpick. I have a 4”, but you don’t often see 5” ones over here. The 4” is legal to carry here (just). The 3” is pointlessly small really. Canoes, Sun Fish, Peanuts and Stockmans are great and I quite like Trappers, but I agree Muskrats are a bit unattractive. I’d only ever buy a Lady’s Leg knife to complete a set. I prefer lady’s legs to have a pulse!
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Slick Slicers, oh they are definitely a bit gaudy but not nearly as gaudy some of the Michael Prater Painted Ponies. I’m glad they passed on doing file worked back springs and blades.
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Slick Slicers, for the life of me I don’t understand why Rough Ryder makes so many Leg knives but they rarely make a scout knife or a large toothpick. I wish they did a four inch toothpick in this series.

Does RR make a pen knife? Small knife with one blade on each end?
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
hondasaki900, they have a few but not many. They are also primarily one off novelty knives and not part of any series. It’s kind of disappointing to me as penknives, especially equal end penknives are one of my top five knives.
@watchcityknives2 жыл бұрын
You know Tobias I just received 6 rough rider knives I ordered from a eBay seller and 4 out of the 6 have cracked sides have you ever gotten any Rough Rider knives with cracked sides and where do order all your Rough Riders from? THANK YOU SIR
@hondasaki9005 жыл бұрын
Do you find on your RR's that the blade hits the backspring when closed? The 3 I've had all did.
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
I know the kick hits the back spring, which is actually what is supposed to happen. I've not experienced anything other than the kick encountering the backspring on a Rough Ryder, as far as I know. What knives do you have where the cutting edge hits the back spring? (or are you talking about the blade making contact with the side of the liners?) I've had that happen on a couple occasions but Rough Ryder replaced the knife, no questions asked.
@hondasaki9005 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I'm talking about the blade edge hitting the backspring. Two of them hit the pin bulge in the center of the handle, causing a nick in the edge. The other hit near the back end of the spring, causing a flat spot. The knives were a peanut (slightly larger than a Case peanut), a dogbone jack, and a small canoe.
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
@@hondasaki900, I've not had that happen. Do have the pattern numbers or the style of knife? If you do, I can check to see if I had the same knife or similar knife in my collection and take a closer look. I might have missed it.
@hondasaki9005 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Peanut 1679, dogbone 1185, canoe 058 (I think)
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
@@hondasaki900, 058 is a mini canoe? I don't have that specific one but I have a couple of them (and one of them did have issues but not what you're describing!). 1679 is a new style jack they are calling a peanut. I think it is the same as a lime green jack knife I have but I'm not 100%. I will double check mine at home. For it to happen three times is really outrageous. I've got several dog bone jacks. I'lll check them over. It sounds to me like the kick on your knives is not long enough to prevent the blade from hitting the back spring. That is totally unsatisfactory.
@jtucci57115 жыл бұрын
Very nice collection, I have always avoided these due to the synthetic stones but this may have changed my mind. What is it with you and the trapper? You seem to have some deep seeded issues with that pattern, Lol
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
The stones on the knives seem to be in three pretty good. So far I haven't had any fall off. So what ever glue they used, must've been pretty good. Thanks for watching. As for the trapper --It's almost an on-going joke, these days. But my issues with the trapper have more to do with its marketing than the actual knife. Despite what Case says, the Trapper is not the most produced traditional pattern knife in American history, nor was it the knife used to tame the west. Case hypes the knife because they are set up to churn them out as commemoratives. They like to use the pattern because it has two big blades with lots of surface for etching! Other companies hop on the band wagon for the same reason. It might be the most produced Case knife for the last several years; but if all you're doing is churning out a new commemorative on a trapper frame every other month, how can it not be?

A doctor knife and Barlow would look nice in stoneworx I think
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
I agree, as long as the doctor knife has a spear blade and a spatula blade. I always feel cheated when the Doctor knife doesn't have those blades. LOL

Tobias Gibson absolutely. Looking at the SMKW catalog and I see Buck has some of those. the stag bone looks like it'll match my Queen congress so I may pick it up. Hopefully a Stoneworx one will be made and I'll get that one too.

@Richard-17763 жыл бұрын
They need to stop with the etching. I have the canoe; it has etching which is a shame, because its a stunning knife but that etch just doesn't fit. Etching often kills the deal for me; it makes the knife look cheap, and the etch is usually something dumb.
