What would make this one more appealing: I think the Yellow Jasper would've been a better option over the malachite. . Or and even better option would've been putting the red where the green is and and a pearl or yellow jasper in the center. I think I would've also slanted the bolster to about 60 degrees and ran the stones at the same slant. I'm not sure if that would help or not but as it is the different slants to the stones just looks like a little off.

It is funny how everyone likes different things. The green is what drew me to this knife. The contrast with the green and abalone is beautiful. This is the first Stoneworx knife that I have purchased.

They like to change up the colors on their stoneworx series. The green Malachite is nice but different from the original stoneworx color pattern.

The malachite I’d slowly growing on me. It looks better on some other knives. At the end of the day it’s still a keeper!

Of coarse here in the uk, we’d call that a pruner, but that’s because we’re a nation of gardeners! I like the pruner as a pattern, though I’m not really a gardener. It’s great for things like opening packages and general use, plus they are supremely easy to pinch open. All that being said, I don’t have any RR pruners. Perhaps that’s because I’ve several Sheffield ones and a few Chinese too. Loving the jazz music by the way!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is -- the blade is called a hawk or hook bill and the knife used to be called a "pruner" The long name used to be Hawkbill pruner or hookbill pruner. It think today in the US it is called a hawkbill because the knife is used by so many professions other than just gardeners and manly construction workers don't want to cut stuff with a knife that their grnadmother uses in her garden. LOL!

Don't think one of these will be replacing my Taylor's Eye Witness pruner any time soon Eric. Why on earth would you want a nail nick with that much blade to pinch???
@KnifeChatswithTobias

I should also mention I only have three or four of these flat sided Hawkbills/ pruners. I use one of them on occasion but I really prefer the rounder handle of the Klein Pruner. Rite Edge also makes a lockback Pruner that is much more ergonomic. I would’ve much preferred a RR Half Hawk.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias I think you hit the nail on the head there (excuse the construction worker - we call them builders, by the way), but I’m sure it’s a macho thing. Here we have an ever so genteel strimmer in our gardens, Americans have a weed-wacker! We have a pruner, you have a hawk-bill! 😂😂😂

@@rowlandbrant674 quite true, but my best pruner is a Chinese lock-back.

I kinda' like the Malachite in the Hawkbill. Maybe because it is a different pattern and it just fits on this one. Cool looking knife in ant case. Thanks Tobias.

Yeah the blade etch was only used on the short run of StoneWorx made before this run. I don't think it was well received - partly because previous knives didn't have it.

With you on the malachite, but I might warm to it were the stripes running in a consistent direction. As it is it looks like one colour too many and a bit random. That said, and ignoring the flaw, pretty nice miniature billhook you got there, Tobias. They swedged the living daylights out of it though, didn't they? :-)

Good to see they've brought this series back with further pattern options. The hawkbill isn't a knife I'd see myself carrying often, but I do enjoy the actual operation of the knife. Something about it makes it quite fun to use.

Plenty of different materials to look at make the covers interesting to see. Mentioning the types of materials used is helpful to know what they are. Not all the materials are stone and someone might think they are from the name of the pattern.

Considering I don't really consider pear or abalone stones, I'd say none of them are true stone. But I still like them!

IMHO, the hawkbill pattern is under appreciated. Doing draw cuts to open packages and cardboard boxes, the hawkbill is the way to go. A razor-type boxcutter is the smarter way to go for such tasks but if you're a knife guy? My edc was a Case Hawkbill with yellow delrin and 1095 blade steel. Case offers most of their popular patterns in this configuration and are commonly the least expensive for the given pattern. I would never advocate 1095. Stainless steel is a smarter choice, but if you want to revisit 1969? Have you seen RR's new "Kayak"? Sweet!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of in the middle with it being underappreciated. I think it serves its purpose very well/ I especially love a hawkbill for scoring drywall and cutting carpet. When it comes to knife collecting I think it is fair to say It is one of those work knives that has flown under the radar among knife collectors. But electricians, gardeners, and those working the trades have probably been singing the praises of a good hawkbill for decades if not centuries. As for the Kayak. I just don't see the appeal in it but I can't argue with its popularity. It has been well received. No doubt it is a really big hit for the hard core Canoe fans and there are plenty of those out there!

I actually liked the Stoneworx line with pearl and malachite. Here, however, I wish they'd stuck with the red/blue/white/abalone combo.

I only have two complaints about the malachite/pearl Stoneworxs and one of those is me quibbling over the name. I think they hi-jacked the StoneWorx name. They had a Synth-Stone Series that was a malachite. This should've been Malachite series should've kept the former name.. (That's was me quibbling). The main problem was no five inch toothpick! Had it they made a five inch toothpick in that series, you know I would've bought one in a heart beat. It's a nice looking series in spite of the the Big R.

Well can't beat the price indeed. The green is very present, but maybe you're getting used to it. The knife is really rather pretty in all, spring seemed a little weak but not disturbing. I wonder if they pinned everything and glued the stones on top of it, or that they used another construction method. It looks to me as if they pinned the backspring to the liners and then atached the stones. I'm curious for your opinion. Thank you for the first of five new Stoneworx knives Tobias.

I'm not so sure about this one. I don't really use or carry hawk bills and its not a pattern I collect, though I do have a few RR has made over the years. To me, the introduction of the green malachite kinda kills it for me. Funny enough, I think the green/white Stoneworx had potential if they'd expanded the line more and the green works better there than it does putting it with everything else here. I know its a minor, fussy point on my end, but this particular knife just feels like everything was thrown together and there it is.

Tobias, I found a couple huge Frost Stockman Knives at a pawn shop. I'm guessing they are 7-8 inches closed. Brass liners, good fit and finish, good snap. Any idea what they can be? I looked online and didn't see anything like them.

They are called "Store Display Models" Essentially over sized knives designed to get a a person attention. Most were sold for around for a $20 around 10 years ago. SMKW is now selling them for anywhere from $25-$40. These are newly made. I guess you could say they are reproduction of old "Store Display Knives" they were very popular 60-100 years ago. Anyway, I have a few of them and I think they're pretty cool. As for the value -- I see people trying to sell them for $100 but they normally go in auctions from $25-$40, same as the current asking prices for new models unless they are real Store Models from old knife Companies (Case, Cartaraugus, Camillus, etc.) Anyway, I like them.

Hawkbills are great knives for pruning bushes, scoring lines, working with electrical cables, cutting rope, carpet, opening packages, etc. It's not as good at spreading peanut butter. Not so hot for stabbing but excellent for slashing. I can see how some folks would find it very useful for EDC. I agree, VG10 still remains an excellent steel!

They do like to mix it up! I guess my taste is kinda conservative (don’t tell anybody). I like the quieter, symmetrical mix of stones, like the original canoe and the new copperhead. Most of the others strike me as higgledy-piggledy, random assortment, overly bright. I do like the hawkbill pattern, have the backwoods bushcrafter. Wish the blade wasn’t so prominent - it’s a wide carry. Bummer that yours was cracked - good on Smoky for refunding your $.
