This poem makes me cry. I first heared this in a Peanuts special called What Have We Learned Charlie Brown? Linus was reciting this poem to the gang while in a poppy field in France. His recitation was touching along with the sad flute music in the background.

Yes I too had to watch it for school, I love this because of the fact “Flanders Fields” is one of the most loved poems in the English language, yet, it was only written in twenty minutes.

Re-read this poem today after watching Patton. The second verse is very powerful. When I read the words We are the Dead, I was drawn right in. LL

This is beautiful. I have no idea how anyone would give it a thumbs down . . . really?? Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it (one of my favourite quotes). Remembrance is for everyone. I love that people are watching this because their school pointed them to it.

What are the reactionaries going to do once social media clamps down on ‘likes’..the thumbs down brigade will be in new territory by having to justify a dislike by debate instead..we all know how those end for the little buttercups don’t we?

Like most Allied soldiers who died in Europe during the First and Second World Wars, John McCrea is buried in a Military Cemetery in the Country where he fell. These are often very large cemeteries with may thousand grave sights. The land of these is often deeded from that host Nation to the Nation who's Sons and Daughters are buried there. Canada has a couple of large Military Cemeteries in France and the Netherlands where the fallen were brought together at the end of each war. But there are also many smaller Canadian War Cemeteries near battle fields or in the case of John McCrea near the Hospital where he served and later died. Whole companies operate taking tourists on tours to these usually pristine Cemeteries and their nearby battle fields. Interestingly most American soldiers who died in the Pacific Theater of War during WWII were repatriated to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Although there are also two American Cemeteries in the Philippians.
