I think you left out the best part: They found out he wasn't deaf because while he was giving an interview someone rang his bell...and he stood up and got it. No, there were no lights like a deaf person would usually have to notice their door bell. Nothing like that. Just a sound and he got up and went to the door. The fact that he answered questions *before his interpreter was done translating* was just the icing on the cake.

Here’s my theory of what happened: Niigaki made this as a sort of prank for him, considering he might’ve known he wasn’t actually deaf during the time where he composed that soundtrack. The thing is, if Mamaru objected to the song because “it sounded horrible”, that would INSTANTLY prove that he’s not actually deaf. The only thing he could’ve done in that situation was roll with it and take blame for the entire thing, so that’s what he did. The song was also most likely approved because... well actually I have no idea how the hell that horribleness got approved. Pure luck? Maybe they thought it actually sounded eerie? Maybe it was so unintentionally comedic that they just decided to put it into the game? Who knows?

As eccentric as the RE DC Dual Shock Soundtrack might be, it also has some pretty impressive and some truly scary tracks. Especially the few ones they recorded with a real orchestra. Plus the soundtrack album contains a pretty dope 10 minute piano suite from the score. The answer why the basement track even went into the game probably lies in the rushed production circumstances. Niigaki even had to ask composer friends so help him out with the music. So the ghostwriter had ghostwriter. And one other thing: Samuragouchi made up his being deaf-story during the production of Onimusha.

I've seen some speculation that since the Basement theme actually sounds reasonably eerie if you replace the trumpets with something more fitting, the ghost writer or someone on the sound team may've intentionally sabotaged the new soundtrack by messing with the instruments, on the logic that the """real""" composer couldn't have spoken up about it without breaking the deaf facade. No evidence for this as far as I'm aware, but it makes perfect sense to me and it's funny.

@arialblack32792 жыл бұрын
My guess (jk, i'm sure i am 100% right) is that the music wasn't originally intended to be exactly like that: it probably was some miscommunication error while the music was being translated to a format that could play on the ps1, since the main culprit of the track's cheesiness is the instrument which is completely out of place in a horror game. I think the original vision didn't have a focus on the melody and was more ambient, with long synth notes that blended together in an eerie, off putting background noise, and it was changed to clown trumpet due to some error (after all, old vidya music was composed with digital samples that had varying lengths. It just used the wrong sample) Making a guitar arrangement doesn't make any sense for this reason, and i find pretty weird that nobody of them experts pointed out this possibility, instead focusing on the melody.
@d-d-i3 жыл бұрын
What I really would wanna hear is official explanation from Capcom themselves that how this whole mess happened and what they feel about it. The original compositions used in the original and first Director's Cut (non-Dual Shock) releases are iconic and memorable, whereas the Dual Shock OST is pretty crappy in many ways. Not only it sounds cheap and badly mixed etc, it's just weird and puts you off the game. The feeling is that they didn't really know that how to compose music for videogames and had to rush it.

I cannot find the source but I think I recall reading that it was used to create an uneasy feeling. Not a music person but I swear I recall something about the arrangement being particularly dreadful in that you would want to entire experience to be over with. The idea being something like those notes give people a negative impression and make them feel anxious. Which kinda makes sense. Besides it's not like it's extremely bad. I kinda have always felt that people hating it seems to confirm that theory. Just people love Resident Evil more than they hate the track so it was always viewed as it being awful. When really the experience you're supposed to have in the basement is an awful experience from the characters perspective. Something like that. Maybe I'm remembering something wrong but I felt like I read somewhere something along those lines. And I feel like it did come his ghost writer. Like I swear I remember him commenting on the track being an exercise in this type of music.
