My child-hood head canon was that the sword of protection was actually the secret "third half" of the key of greyskull. All three could change shapes and He-Man's axe and Skeletor's staff were just alternate shapes for their own "swords". (I put that in quotes because even that wasn't their true shape.) I also imagined that using the other swords was what gave them their different suits/powers. The battle armors were what Adam and Skeletor got from using Adora's Sword of protection. Thunder-Punch was what happened when Adam used Skeletor's item. (It was gold instead of purple because Adam was cleansing the evil from it.) Etc. Not at all canonically accurate. Just my childhood head-canon.

Your videos answer so many questions I've had, and so many I never thought to ask. Thanks for all you do for us fans and lore junkies! For me She-Ra's sword is a neat construct because it reflects the mercurial sword archetype from mythology, religion and poetry where stories analogize truth as a sword or the pen as a weapon of choice. Even the dual nature of a weapon that can be used offense and defense is shown when the sword becomes a shield or as you show, a helmet. What a great mythos the He-Man and She-Ra properties are!

I honestly like DC's version combined with the Classics version. So it's more or less King Grayskull had a sword. He-ro imbued that sword with some of the power of the Orb and connected those two. After defeating the Snake Men, Grayskull found a magic jewel and decided to make another sword with it, intending that sword to go to the champion of the next tournament/festival and naming that winner his champion and bodyguard. So he makes the sword look like his, yet with the jewel in the hilt and it also gets the Orb's wifi code from Grayskull's Sword of Power. But, before the festival can happen, Grayskull gets killed, the Sword of Power gets sealed and the Sword of Protection gets lost for a time. Later on it gets rediscovered, but never used until Adora uses it to become She-Ra.

I think Scott misspoke a few times. 40% is actually a lil under half, not over half. But I got what Scott meant. 😂 At least he corrected himself when he realized that Swift Wind is an "alicorn" & not a unicorn (of course, we "80s babies" known about My Little Pony too). Since twins are kind of "clones", it make sense that their swords are "clones" of each other, w/ an obvious difference. I used to think She-Ra's sword's stone was just there to make it "girly" & distinctive from He-Man's sword. I wish the cartoon would've explained the stone was the reason behind all of She-Ra's sword's wonky transformations. Is it also the reason why She-Ra has more powers than He-Man? Because things like her "animal telepathy", & "healing touch" were never really explained in the series.

Speaking of "incest" I find it interesting that in Latin America and Spain (since don´t know when) marrying cousins is EXTREMELY frowned upon. Even if they´re distant ones. Yet, in the 1800s or so till not so distant time, it was very well received to marry cousins. In fact, families were extremely happy when that happened or they even planned for it to happen. ...to me, that concept is just so gross. Funny how that bit of Star Wars creepiness happened because George Lucas couldn't let go of a concept he hadn't foreshadowed at all in the previous 2 movies, but still stubbornly insisted on putting it on Jedi. And thus lots of uncomfortable viewing of Star Wars and Empire was born! Gotta love how lots of discussion was born from the Filmation staff not wanting to design a new sword for She-Ra (as the toy's sword was different from He-Man's). Also, wasn't Catra supposed to be She-Ra's nemesis originally, but then for the cartoon they added the Horde, and made Catra a member of it? She-Ra and the Princesses of Power are, in my opinion, the best She-Ra, He-Man and MOTU piece of media ever put out.

I still find it so creepy and weird that in the She-Ra series Adora's foster sister Catra is turned into her explicit love interest in the last season and all these 20-somethings are like "yay! perfect and ideal gay representation"-- it's fine to make her gay, but transforming what was definitely a sisters relationship where the tension was that their abusive mother massively favored one over the other into 'they totally want to screw one another' is just fucking creepy to me. It would be creepy and weird if it were a heterosexual relationship, so making it homosexual doesn't change that.
@MungkaeX3 жыл бұрын
I agree. The way they tied everything up in the final season I personally wasn’t happy with; and didn’t think Catra earned her redemption. Overall loved the story and world building; but the end just felt rushed together like they had 20 episodes and were told they had 10 to cram them all into.
@TheHobgoblyn3 жыл бұрын
@@MungkaeX I feel like they had that issue across a lot of seasons. For example, one season spent quite a lot of time with a plotline about Catra taking over the outcasts in the waste and she was going to lead them against the Horde... only for that to result in nothing more than her having 2 unnamed sidekicks for a single episode, the Horde coming across as though it had absolutely no members at all and then all the focus was on Catra activating something that nearly ended the world... and then the entire plotline was entirely dropped and forgotten. And that's just an example of so many things in that series where it seemed like they had a good initial idea, a decent build and then it all gets screwed up because they rush the ending and throw out everything they had built to. Oh-- and then there is the whole thing about Glimmer's mother getting herself stuck in limbo in order to stop their planet from being revealed to Horde Prime... only for it to be revealed to him and for him to invade it in what couldn't have been more than a few more weeks. So both her sacrifice was entirely pointless and Glimmer never even bothered to bring it up with Catra who created the situation that caused it. Nor is there any indication that they are trying to save her either.
@MungkaeX3 жыл бұрын
@@TheHobgoblyn I agree on most points; but as an immortal being who exists beyond what mortals comprehend as “time”; Queen Angella’s “sacrifice” isn’t actually as dramatic of a sacrifice as it appears on it’s surface. Should we get any follow up media to what we currently have; Angella will be back with little to no negative consequences beyond the lost time with her family (and if pop culture media has taught me anything, she’ll probably come with a power boost for “reasons”).
@TheHobgoblyn3 жыл бұрын
@@MungkaeX I will grant that if they could create a device that could bring her back, maybe it could even work in a way that it would seem like no time had passed for her. But, I would find it odd that Glimmer would be thinking that way and so quick to forgive Catra that she wouldn't even mention it. But, really, I was unhappy with a lot of execution of things. For example, the creators made a horde soldier trio that Adora had known almost as long as Catra and she never seemed to care about them at all, which was weird. The boy was even on the verge of switching sides but even the "good guys" mistreated him given the chance. And I would have liked to see more from Huntra and Tonguelasher and his snakemen. As well as classic horde characters like octavia, grizzlor and such that only go cameos.

Happy day after Thanksgiving! Another great video, Scott. Thanks! Question- to what degree does storytelling follow after a toy is already designed? It seems stories are made to sell the toys; to what degree is a toy designed and then a story is developed to explain a toy/feature/detail and to what degree does the story come first? Are both developed at the same time? Does it depend on the brand/time period? Do toy companies develop their own stories in-house or do they hire outside companies/outside authors to do this? What are the backgrounds of the people who come up with he stories? The mythology of He-Man, as I've learned it through this series, is far deeper and much more interesting than some ahem, recent very high budget movies, even, ahem, high budget trilogies.. Are the authors of these stories known within the industry or is the authorship of these stories/narratives uncredited? Thanks!
@tawdryhepburn46863 жыл бұрын
He details all of this on the channel. But the short answer is - back in the 80s, toy brands would often hire Marvel to sketch out a story after the figures were designed. Today, the toy brands have entertainment arms. Fortunately, nothing new is ever made. So they can just recycle previous mythology.

Skeletor cloning the goddess to raise the clone and make her his wife is incredibly creepy; but it's Skeletor, HE IS CREEPY. Filmation did him dirty; in the early comics he was incredibly creepy and evil AF, and the plan makes sense as wrong as it is morally. Theoretically, the clone would be loyal to Skeletor and because she's the goddess she has access to the castle and then so would he. He'd also be banking on the goddess being morally unable to harm what would essentially be her child. To repeat, Skeletor was evil AF before TV guidelines and Filmation changed him into a shadow of his former self.
