I live in Dannemora. What a scary time this was for us. There's a siren that was supposed to go off if an inmate escapes, but it never went off. Road blocks, helicopters, and we were scared. What a horrid June that was. Thx for re-telling it so well.

Same thing happened to us when that pick axe killer escape from a prison bus in Texas a while back. My woman works right of the same highway some miles down the road. I was terrified picking her up and dropping her off until they finally caught him. He ended up getting that family grandparents and grandchildren. It was definitely a scary time for everyone around.

i worked at the summer camp up the road from dannemora and my lanta that was a terrifying summer. We only got security detail when the campers arrived, and we routinely had troops stop by to search the grounds. We coped by making t-shirts (the counselors) at the end of it all, absolutely terrifying.

I'm from Bombay NY. My mom worked with Tilly and Lyle installed the ceiling fan in my parents bedroom. I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on Tilly. Why were these two on the Honor Dorm? Started digging in February and not a single guard caught it? If you live there you know what was going on with the prison guards at the time. I just couldn't believe they weren't eaten alive by the black flies in June!!

@@CantTellYouNope, "Manson lamps" has been a saying in the US since back when Charles Manson ordered his group of flunkies to kill all those people back in 1969. In most of the photos & TV coverage, Charlie would give this crazy-ass stare to the cameras. Those dark, beady eyes were the "Manson lamps". I don't know who first coined the phrase, but it's sure gotten a lot of mileage. I've heard it all my life, & I'm getting mighty close to 60 years old. Ugh, it really hurt to type that, LOL. James Earl Ray was sent to Brushy mountain here in Tennessee after he was convicted of murdering MLK Jr. It's deep in southern Appalachia and the property surrounding it is a wildlife preserve, with cougars and black bears. He escaped and they eventually found him a day or two out in the forest. When they found him he allegedly said "boys I sure am glad you found me" haha. There was some other inmates that got loose but not too much fanfare on finding them, escaped a work detail and city boys. The area they fled, if the mountain doesn't get you, the hillbillies will.

"Give it a goo" sounds like a Scottish (?) accent. I like it! It's amazing that in today's era where we're all exposed to mass media from childbirth that we still have regional accents like that. I was told I have a New Jersey accent in English, a South Moravian / Hanaquian accent in Czech, and an Oberpfalz accent in German. Which is odd, when I think about it.

I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and my family had a cottage in Plattsburgh right next door to where this happened. I remember it so well. In the video, you see the prison guard being escorted into the Town of Plattsburgh for court. My parents sold their house in the US and my brother and I decided to buy our own place down there. We actually went to see a house around the corner from the prison. Beautiful house but we didn't get it. We did get one in another neighboring town not too far though.
