She was known for her distinctive heavily lashed eyes, thin, androgynous figure and a short haircut. And she became one of the world's first supermodels and a fashion icon of the decade.
At the age of 16, Lesley Hornby stopped by a London salon, to buy a shampoo. The salon's owner, asked to cut her hair and Lawson agreed. Then a professional photographer took several photos of her in the salon chair. The Daily Express saw the images and referred to her as ‘the face of 1966’.
The name Twiggy came from friends teasing her about her slim, ‘twig-like’ frame. The model weighed only 40 kilograms and had a boyish figure. Thousands of girls around the world girls, trying to get closer to the parameters of the model, starved themselves, while fainting. So the model asked them to stop.
She retired from modeling in 1970 after four years, joking at the time: “You can’t be a clothes hanger for your entire life.”
Twiggy married American actor Michael Witney in 1977. Their daughter, Carly, was born in 1978. And now at 73 she looks as good as ever.
