This is why so many dogs end up in shelters or abandoned. People don’t research a breed before ownership. This happens more often than not with Dobermans. Unfamiliar to the breed, people are attracted to its sleek physique and regal appearance, but soon find out how energetic and their curiosity for mischief, when not properly trained and exercised.

Right! SMH!!!! Humans never seem to grasp how much damage they do when they re-home a family pet. Imagine your family gave you away because you got too big!!! It's heart braking for real!y My dogs are my life and i couldn't even think about re-homing them!!😭😢 When bringing any animal into your home you should educate yourself so you know what to expect. Humans need to understand that WE make the decision to get an animal, we are also the ones that make every decision for them going forward. We also need to understand that every choice made by US will affect them for the rest of their lives. It is our responsibility to ensure our pets live their best life, in a loving, healthy home!! We owe it to these beautiful creatures to do right by them, they are forever loyal to us !!! 💙💚💛💜🐶🐕🐩

One of the things that I absolutely adore about you is the fact that you are unafraid to admit when you make a mistake in approaching a new dog. That is something that every rescuer or pet owner should be able to do instead of blaming the animals. Thank you so much for being who you are and for doing what you do.
@rondameier8168

Yep.... I actually got bit by a husky one time, and while his owner was freaking out, I explained to him, and apologized to the dog, that it was my fault. He happened to be chewing on his chew and I went to pet him but was distracted/not paying attention to what he the dog was telling me, so he gave me a warning nip, it hurt, but had I been paying attention it wouldn't have happened because I'd have noticed what he was trying to say. Lee isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, learn from them (which is the most important), and then go about it a different way. He is able to read dogs and their demeanor really quick, and most timew brings the right kind of energy for that particular dog.... He shouldn't beat up on himself though, because he corrected fast and went about it a different way fast, and it worked. It always upsets me when dogs pay the price for human incompetence/cruelty. This situation isn't anything like that, but you know what I mean.... Dogs talk, we just have to be willing to listen..

People always assume Saint Bernards are lazy and not energetic. They're not if you're not. My old girl and I used to walk at least 5 miles a day until she was almost 11, snowshoed and hiked for hours, swam, etc. I got my current girl at 5 and at almost 10 still has the energy of a 3 year old at times. It took her months to build enough stamina to walk for even an hour but now she loves it. My dogs love to lounge but they thrive with exercise and mental stimulation. I'm so glad Athena found such a great home and new pack. Saints are the best!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I have rescued and rehabilitated dogs cats snakes and parrots most of my life. I have never had to rehome an animal because I took on too much, and I'm a 5 ft tall disabled woman! It's never the dog's fault, as you already know and have addressed. I've always been the last stop for every animal because they've been supposedly problematic or aggressive. I can literally say at 5 ft tall, and physically debilitated because of pain, that I have never met a dog cat bird or snake that was actually truly problematic or aggressive

I feel bad when a family has a dog and needs to relinquish it...that the dog became bigger than they expected, etc. It is great that she went with you where she'll be loved and cared for, but it just speaks to me that people really need to look at all aspects of the growth of their family and the breed they consider. Glad she's in a good place with you and your furbabies!!♥️

I like that you feel for her owners..HOWEVER..surely ANYONE getting a dog would look into the breed and how big thet get..everyone surely knows how big St Bernards get.. so whilst I like your sentiments I find myself frustrated that animals are bought without thought of the possible long term care they'll need..I feel I need to explain why I feel this way..i foster neglected and abused cats and an part of a rescue group who continually pick up the pieces of cases like this..it is the animal that suffers and physical issues are easy to deal with..believe me when I say that its the psychological impact that takes time and hurts me to see their fear..lackbof trust and complete confusion of their circumstances. .it's good that Lee now has her and she's not just been abandoned to a shelter or pound..but I still find it hard to swallow..sorry but I'm on the side of the animal here

One tiny piece of advice from somebody who's been doing this for over 40 years, let the guilt go. Dogs move on a lot quicker than we do. Feeling guilt about your initial meeting is not going to help you help her. Just realize that it happened it's over and everything's golden. The saddest part of these things is the animal never quite understands why they're no longer with the family that they loved so well. I love that you give them all time to heal from those wounds. Granted, they tend to move forward better than we humans ever could and that's one blessing that dogs have that I'm very thankful for as a rescuer

I was thinking the exact same thing saying to myself, "I bet Athena and some of the others dogs are just sad when they first get there because their people are gone and have no clue what is going on". I also imagine for some dogs who haven't been other dogs get pretty overwhelmed for the first few days, even though he does a great job getting them acclimated to the pack starting with the sweetest and friendliest of the pack".

@@mwrice45 no. They don't understand why they are being thrown away. They don't understand no matter what you tell them. They can't wrap their head around why they are being disposed of when they have served their family so well. As someone who has done this most of my life, no animal ever understands why they are gotten rid of! They can't wrap their head around what they did wrong, and they always think it's them that did something wrong. In reality it's never the animal's fault, it is always the human's fault! Animals are intelligent and very empathic, but they have the intelligence of a child. A child never understands why their parents desert them..... Neither does an animal

I saw a St. Bernard tied up outside a Banana Republic in Manhattan on a drizzly cold day. I approached, babytalking her, started to cautiously pet her, and the next thing I know she's got her paws over my shoulders giving me a BIG HUG! With the rain making everything damp, I was soon COVERED in Bernard hair. I think St. Bernards must be of a really sweet temperament. This dog was super friendly.

It's incredibly unfair to make such assumptions about the previous owners, perhaps they were old? perhaps they got the puppy and didn't know the breed? perhaps they knew how big the breed was but didn't fully understand the repurcussions in their particular home setup? Many many possibilities besides being a piece of shit! The fact that they gave her up rather than chaining her in the back garden is a good thing.

What an adventure Miss Athena has had since you picked her up! She is timid and looks to you for direction all the time so she’s starting to trust you. I’m sure she felt good walking back from the river with nice, wet, dirty feet 😂👍. It makes me sad and angry when I hear of cases where people dump the pet they promised they would love forever at a shelter for a stupid reason like one Athena’s owners gave! People, research, think about and be damned sure you’re getting the right dog for your life. These are living, breathing beings who have the same feelings and emotions as we do. If you can’t handle what’s expected of you, don’t get a pet, please!! Lucky Athena is going to have a wonderful life thanks to Lee Asher 👏👏🥰👍.

As a last resort I took him to Charlies Canine Camp for 12 days of training and when I picked him up Charlie trained me on how to keep the training up….he was 8 months at the time. He just gets better and better and he follows my commands so he’s not out of control and I love him to death. It would have broken my heart to have had to give him up. Surprised at your reaction when you 1st met Athena but you showed your only human & we all make mistakes. She's a beautiful girl just like Lily and makes a great addition to your pack!

I was camping one night and was alone by a roaring fire while everyone was in a sweat lodge. Out of the darkness a huge Saint Bernard came ambling up to me. I was feeling very happy and wanted to feel his fur, so I just reached up and put my arms around his neck and hugged and kissed him. He collapsed happily on top of me. Then another Saint Bernard came up and just collapsed on the other side of me. Their owner came up a bit later and introduced me to them. He traveled everywhere with them. I was sad to see them amble off. I have been a fan ever since.

When my daughter was just turning 2 yrs old we got a bull mastiff puppy. He was bigger than his littermates. By 6 months old he weighed 100 lbs. My daughter learned by then that when he got excited and would run up and down the hallway in our house to flatten herself up against the wall to stay out of his way. That dog loved my daughter so much. He hung out with her all day long. She was very shy, so he was very shy around people. He took all his ques from her. When she was friendly with people, he was as well. Except really hot days he went everywhere with us. I never left him in a hot car. We left him home when we were going to be out of the car somewhere he couldn't go. But he was always with us. Even when I took my daughter to preschool and picked her up. He knew exactly what door they came out of and would watch that door at pickup time. Often I'd take him to wait outside the door. All the little preschoolers would come out and surround him. He'd hold so still while they all petted him. Truly a gentle giant. He eventually weighed 145 lbs. At 2 yrs old my daughter could walk him on the leash. He never pulled her. People driving by always had a big smile on their faces upon seeing them.
