What a complex couple.
And what a wonderful series that I just had to vid.
if you haven't watched Ekaterina, it is a Russian series (currently on Amazon Prime!) I learned a lot about this time period in Russia and it was a very well done production. So many beautiful costumes, settings, layered characters, etc.

**make sure to watch in 1080p* Ekaterina was a wonderful series. This only covers the relationship between Catherine and Peter (which is season 1), so please go watch both seasons on Amazon if you haven't already! You will not regret it.

A tragic story. It is difficult knowing if Catherine II ordered the killing of Peter III or not. A largely unhappy marriage, but maybe under other circumstances it could have worked far better. However as I mentioned in other posts I think that Peter III actually was the biological father of Paul I, but not of Caherines II:s other son and her daughter. There are differnt circumstances leading me to the thought. Paul and Peter is a little similar. On portraits from young age of Paul I think I can see it more. But it is possible that Paul had lack of growth hormone (and would today have been treated with such added), so the thing that he was shorter than Peter could possibly have one of the explanations in that. The real Peter seems to have tried to reform Russia during his relatively short reign. I think empress Elizabeth was a complicated nature, neither a "demon" nor an "angel". Exactly how she thought when it comes to the marriage between Catherine and Peter I don´t know. Among ordinary Russians Peter became a little of a legend, a legand so strong that there is even a story from the WW 2 about strange things happening at his palace near St petersburg ( Leningrad) saving children from German bombs. I don´t claim it to be true, but I think I´ll see if I can find more text about that. I like sort of curiosities.

They could be really good couple, but he was too afraid and thought he doesn’t deserved her. She had too much expectation from him. Sad how sometimes ppl make mistakes

I beg to differ . . . he was kinda just legitimately uninterested from what i've seen and researched. Acted like a child - the man just never seemed to grow up or become responsible, I doubt he saw Ekaterina as anything other than a means to an end; a way to get an heir.

@@thesmoothcriminalthatstruc88 In series it is shown so-called “official history” about Peter which was created by Catherine itself. It is very far from reality (you know, she came to power illegally and for own legitimation pictured tsar in absolutely black paints). But for short time which he ruled he issued incredible amount of acts/laws (actually few hundreds, looks like he planned and prepared them for several years before, it is really incredible amount of complicated state acts, his productivity can be compared only with Peter the Great, his grandfather and founder of Russian Empire), they were incredible progressive and good for his time, which show him as very good and clever Tsar. Nothing similar with later propaganda of Catherine. And yep, looks like he just not loved her and preferred other women. Why not, it is life.

@@thesmoothcriminalthatstruc88 I think Peter knew in his heart that the empress was just using him as a prop to claim her own legitamacy to the throne but didn't actually intend to pass it to him . He knew what the empress thought of him and he suspected that if he actually had sex with Catherine and gave birth to a child the empress would take the child and make the child the heir to the throne and send him to imprisonment like Ivan. That's why he avoided Catherine from the beginning. But Catherine went on adultering (can't blame her since she did give him numerous chances, even tried to kiss him to prove her love for him when he was infected with smallpox) and that is probably what made him become disgusted and jealous towards her.
