Isiah Thomas was an amazing player back in the day, but unfortunately...being a great player doesn't mean you'll be a great general manager. Here is the full story of how Isiah Thomas ruined the New York Knicks.

Not defending Isiah, but Scott Layden (his predecessor) wasn't much better. He gave 30 year old Allan Houston a 6 yr/$100M contract, which was so bad it literally created the amnesty clause. He also traded Marcus Camby and a freshly drafted Nene to the Nuggets for Antonio McDyess, who ended up playing only 18 games for the Knicks due to injury before being sent off to Phoenix in the Marbury deal. Not to mention his fetish for acquiring ex-Jazz players who had terrible contracts (see: Howard Eisley and Shandon Anderson)

Isiah was drafting really well. He is not even top 10 worst gm ever. But because he worked for the knicks franchise every bad thing gets overblown like crazy. The players that Zeke signed or drafted had much better careers after they left knicks: David Lee is a champion Zach Randolph might get his jersey retired in Memphis Crawford still in the league as a servicable scorer Nate Robinson had great years in boston and chicago which proves once again that at least zeke had a great eye for the talent

Well I came back to this video remembering people arguing about if Isiah or Phil were worse as Knicks GM, and guys like Billy King & Scott Laydon. But on RealGM an article popped up about 'The Stepian Rule', which I had previously no knowledge of, and although he was the owner, Ted Stepian might just be the worst sports executive I've ever seen. "In a span of less than five months, Stepien had shipped away the team’s first round picks in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 and to make matters worse, shortly before he had control of the team they traded their 1982 first to the Lakers which eventually became the No. 1 pick and James Worthy." Dude fucked it up so badly that when the new owner took over a couple years later, the NBA just gave them first rounders back for free so the team didn't collapse completely. But still, the players they got played a combined 170 games or something, then the players who were chosen with the traded picks wound up being: Derek Harper (1983), Sam Perkins (1984), Detlef Schrempf (1985) and Roy Tarpley (1986). SMH that's BAAAAAAD.

I’ll never understand why organizations continue to think that great players will be great executives. They are two opposite ends of the spectrum. There should be a video like this about Matt Millen’s time as the Detroit Lions “President and CEO”...

Honestly I think all of IT's bad decisions came as a result of the Stephon Marbury trade bungle. A trade that would've worked out under most situations, but alas, it was Stephon Marbury. The fallout from this probably threw off any game he had as a GM especially since this was one of his very first big moves. I think IT's next moves (signing James and Brown) represented a panicked effort to try and make a 360 degree turn from the Stephon Marbury trade in hopes that veteran leadership combined with a completely nontraditional way of measuring player success (as in Jerome James) was a better formula for success (since Stephon Marbury, under traditional metrics, failed spectacularly, but only for that specific instance). Unfortunately, instead of finding success, IT kept trying to make extreme pivots to atone for his mistakes, which only led to more mistakes that needed atoning for.

He's basically a medicine that seem to help you get better at first, but then it made the illness worsen after a while. This sums up the Knicks during that time, the first year with him was promising as he helped got them to the playoffs (though as a last seed) and were leading the division for a while in 2005 but then...they died.

Dr0pkidd The only thing good Phil did was draft Kristaps and its too early to say about Frank, while Zeke had gotten some trafe assets in to get Melo whixh was a good idea in the first place Phil gave the Knicks for the first year of his job as GM was the franchise record in losses for a season in 65 losses, Zeke went and tanked just like Hinkie for the 76ers hell Hinkie is getting praise just saying that when Zeke got into New York they were going into a rebuild mode while in 2014 they weren't and still lost badly for 3 seasons straight he tried to get rid of Melo for the three years he was there which is pretty bad looking at the teams back then 65 losses 2015, 2016 still losing then in 2017 the worst superteam in the history of the NBA couldn't even get to playoff contention with the team they had and then they split and what you have is a washed-up Center in Noah, Kristaps, and the others they stood with the team, Phil even traded Hardaway Jr. to the Hawks and he came back because Phil got fired for 3 years he was there.

Being bad helped Phil out I think he's getting too much credit for number 4 overall pick. If the team didn't suck so bad they most likely wouldn't be in position to get him. He sucked or tanked either way anyone can tank a team.
