@@oitoitoi1 not really clubs like Monaco, Leeds ,Deportivo made stupid financial decisions which they would not have been able to make had ffp existed at their time and the current big clubs (excluding oil money clubs) always made sensible decision at the time.

@@nihartaksande4501 Abramovich took over chelsea in 2003, chelsea wouldn't be allowed to spend anywhere near the levels now that they did then. They tripled their wage bills in a year. The big clubs have all made terrible financial decisions over the years, just the system has effectively built a cushion in (things like the 10 year coeffient) for them to prevent them every really facing disaster like relegation. Chelsea this year, if they weren't already a big club would be heading for catastrophe in the next seasons given their level of spending vs results, and the length of the contracts they've handed out, they would literally be looking at insolvency or holding off relegation as ffp crushes them. They won't however because they have a cushion of revenue streams from previous long term performance, that e.g. leicester don't have. They're not in Europe next year, but they're still going to get significant money from it. The big clubs basically got to do all their ridiculous over spending and stupid financial decisions driven by ego etc. before FFP. They effectively had a 20 year head start, then stopped the race for everyone else. The reality is it's almost impossible for a "new" big club to emerge, as the system is set up so that smaller clubs, if they want to compete at all, have to adopt high risk strategies (like the Leicester model), and unless they can have on field success (over a 10 year time period) they can't grow their revenue. So they're stuck. Either do what Leicester did and hope you can pull it off year after year (or as seen this season it will be disastrous), or be content to fight for mid table. Even Newcastle with all the money in the world, will take a decade of incredibly good management to come close to getting their revenue up to the level of the big clubs that will allow them to have any cushion at all in terms of performance, which in turn allows them to rebuild sides after they age out/have a bad season, without getting crushed by FFP. They have the money, but they can't really spend it outside of improving infrastructure and the women's team etc. It's why a lot of sides are now building new stadiums (not included in FFP) it's the best way to increase your revenue without breaking FFP. Just think since 2012 when FFP came in (just after the PSG takeover), have any new big clubs emerged as serious competitors for the champions league season after season? It's not because the big clubs are better managed (often quite the opposite), it's because the financial rules are rigged in their favour. UEFA and the leagues know it as well, but are too scared to change things because of the threat of the super league. TL:DR FFP was written by the big clubs to make sure they will always be the big clubs, and no one else can ever become one.

One important fact this short failed to mention: nearly every player on the team was either from the youth squad, a free transfer or purchased for little more than peanuts from lower local clubs. Mourinho literally built a team from nothing, unlike modern days where clubs essentially buy their trophies.

Arsenal's biggest failure was drawing their way to an Unbeaaten League title and not going all out for the Champions League. The League title was won but Wenger was obsessed with going Unbeaten because he said they would the year before and not goung for a winnable Quadruple. It’s unique because of the era it was done in, that Porto side had no business winning a champions league and they operated at a tremendous financial disadvantage compared to teams from the big 5 leagues. Since then no other team outside of the big 5 leagues has won it or even made the final since. And the last time a team outside of the big five had made the final before Porto was a stacked Ajax side coached by van gaal in 95-96, back before the format was changed to protect the bigger teams and ensure they made it into the latter stages of the competition more regularly.

This will probably come as a shock to you, but 13 years prior to this, Crvena Zvezda (also not from the top 5 leagues) won the European Cup (Champions League). And 5 years prior to them, Steaua Bucuresti (also not from top 5 leagues) also won the EC (CL). Also Ajax (71, 72, 73, 95), Celtic (66), Benfica (61, 62). So let's tone it down a bit with the sliced bread.

Maybe the terminology should be changed to Top 6 to include Portugal, or Top 4 until French clubs starts bringing home trophies. While their clubs are performing better overall than Portugal's teams in the coefficient calculations, Portugal is 4-5 in the Champions League finals and 2-5 in Europa League compared to France's 1-6 and 0-5 finals marks.
