Old Trafford has been neglected. Literally. For years the home of Manchester United, “The Theatre of Dreams” has been allowed to deteriorate.
From leaking roofs to rodents on the pitch and dodgy WiFi. Old Trafford needs an upgrade.
Why has it been allowed to happen? How much would it cost to repair?

Update: On the 7th May, in a letter to Manchester United fans, Joel Glazer wrote: "We recognise that we will need to significantly increase investment in Old Trafford and our training complex to ensure that the club’s facilities remain among the best in Europe. As part of this, we will consult with fans on investments related to the stadium and the matchday experience."

Agreed. The often criticised North London clubs have still invested a lot of money in training faculties, academies, stadiums, etc...even if they don't know what they are doing on the pitch with their first team. But that's much more down to incompetence than outright neglect like with the Glazers at Utd. The likes of Arsenal and Tottenham are still doing some things correct, i.e., see Tottenham's state of the art training centre or Arsenal's increasingly impressive academy. Utd are riddled with rust in every aspect.

Im a United fan and walk past old Trafford everyday on my way to work and it’s honestly sad to see the state of the stadium and the surrounding area, meanwhile on the other side of Manchester, city have redeveloped the whole area, even building affordable housing for the community, shows what can be done what can be done when your owners actually care

@tcol97
@tcol97 3 жыл бұрын
@@Monaleenian that has no relevance at all to what I wrote, and even if it did it just proves my point even more, why isn’t this being reinvested in the area around the stadium or the actual stadium itself? Which is what city have been consistently for about 10 years. I doubt you’ve ever been to Manchester anyway if United’s matchday revenue is your only take away from this video because if you’d ever stepped foot into old Trafford you’d know it’s literally falling apart and we’re in big danger of getting left behind by other clubs

I live in Stretford, near Old Trafford, I worked at the ground in 1989 for nearly a year in the executive suite, at the time it was the best ground in England with the best corporate facilities, even then though there was a rodent problem, I remember the local council at Trafford council inspecting the kitchens in the main stand (where the executive suite was).... Today Old Trafford is in a sorry state, a cramped ground with terrible facilities, only 3 seasons ago an elderly gentleman died after falling down the exit during a game against City, if you happen to be sat at the back of any of the 3 big stands, you have trouble seeing the whole pitch, especially the goal at the opposite end, in comparison to City's, Arsenal's & Tottenham's new grounds, it's decades behind.... I visited OT in Nov 2019 for the Brighton match, my first ever visit. While I was awe struck to just be there as a United fan, I did realise 1. The cramped space between rows. I am 6 feet 2 inches and had problems managing my knees. 2. The food and beverage area ran out of food at HT. They cater to 75000 fans every fortnight. They should know how much to stock. 3. The restroom at HT was a horrific scene. Maybe that’s how crowded the stadium restrooms are during intervals, but how people were not pissing over each other was a miracle. 4. The staircases that lead you to the stands could become massive choke points in the event of disasters that require quick evacuation.

Lets not forget the absolute farce that was the disability section... behind the goals under the away fans, in an area where some seats are literally at ground level below the pitch. Lets put our most vulnerable fans in area where they are more likely to get stray shots (mainly from fred) in the face, flares or other things dropped on them from away fans and with a limited view of the pitch. Luckily they are now changing this and moving to the back of the stretford end. It reinforced the view that people in charge aint got a scooby doo.

I took my son to watch a game at Old Trafford 2 yrs ago. We were sat right at the very back of the quadrant. United scored at the opposite end of the pitch where we were and, incredibly, I had to duck down to see the ball go in the net because the sloping roof was obscuring part of the goal! A good 3rd of the stadium you couldn't see because the roof was hiding it. We were all shocked by how shabby the exterior of the stadium was also looking, rust and flaking paint on the white(ish) steel on the roof. There are far worse stadiums of course but this is Manchester United who like to call themselves the biggest club in the world, well if they are they really need to act like it. It will be interesting what kind of a transfer window Utd have this summer, don't get the players the team needs then I can see the hardcore fans really venting their frustration.

As a football fan I've been to Old Trafford a few times, I can really appreciate that it has a really old school feel. That it's old and a bit torn makes it really feels like a historical stadium with lots of legacy. It's lovely. Newer stadiums feel and look like plastic wifi router boxes. They are much more boring. I think you should upgrade some aspects, but I hope it can keep the old school feel, it's very unique. Preserving legacy is more important than ever. In the last few seasons there has been a lot of empty seats every game, so OT has regularly not been getting filled (despite the official attendance), a lot of people are simply not turning up! The railway line stops an expansion of the South stand and I cannot see a way round that problem that would not cost at least a billion - and we still have the problem that OT is regularly not getting filled so it would not be cost effective in any case to expand further with more seats. Fans are already too far away from the pitch with poor sightlines in other parts of the ground which proves that continually building back, back and back again in existing stands simply does not work . Even poor old Everton will have a better ground soon which shows you how far OT has fallen.

The big difference is LFC got lucky in the end that they couldn't afford to keep hold of the club and Hicks couldn't raise the finances to buy out Gillet, which led to the banks stepping in and forcing through a sale to FSG. Also, Utd fans were spoilt under Edwards, Gill & Sir Alex whilst Moores & Parry let LFC stagnate. I would say LFC fans have had it far tougher in regard to ownership problems than Utd fans since the 90s.

Let's remember when Sir Alex Ferguson referred to old Trafford sounding like a morgue.

Football an the general public has changed. The culture an scene at football was dying by the late 80s it had lost what it had. Football reinvented itself an for the new wave of society etc they liked it. Even if you set it up as it was yrs ago it still wouldn’t be the same

As buildings, businesses, and things get old maintenance becomes very important. I’m saddened when businesses aren’t maintained, updated, or renovated when needed. Not a Man U. fan but I hope they reinvest in their club infrastructure.
