Wolverine has been in every single Marvel fighting game released by Capcom. That’s how popular and synonymous the character is to the public. Even before the films, Wolverine was well known, and he’s never been unpopular no matter how you look at it. So to have him be left out of this entry because Disney was in a pissing match with Fox over movie rights shows just how short sighted and petty they were being, and to excuse it as “no one actually CARES about the character, just his systems” means they are either bald faced liars or they are so out of touch with the community they should be serving.

Infinite killed infinite more than dbz did. If dbz released around the same time Marvel vs Capcom 3 did, more people would still play Marvel. Its just that Infinite was trashing itself, and then dbz made its way in. Gameplay wise infinite FOR SURE, has more creativity and options. Infinitez gameplay is definitely better and its online. Everything else dbz beats it in.

BTW Ryu might just be the most "experienced" character of any fighting game ever, having faced characters from Nintendo universe including the guest characters from all other games, namco characters, tatsunoko, SNK, final fight even Assura. @@SaturnMoon But the thing is, Ryu is Generic because He himself created all the staples and clichès of what a standard shoto fighter is and is supposed to be in a game. His main purpose is to be the 'go to' character to a person first picking up the game, being the one everybody knows how to play even before touching a new iteration. That said, there just no way leaving him out on any chance of appearing in a fighting game he has. Thats probably as strong of an alibi you can get to be in fighting game.

Yes. This was an understated fact. Capcom was given a shoestring budget, so while it's easy to ascribe blame to them, Capcom knew by the initial budget it wasn't worth investing in. Disney really should bear the brunt of blame.

His comment made people mad but he wasn't wrong. Most fighting game characters are just a mass of functions. Ed from SF5 has Juri's Hard Kick from SF4. Jacqui in MK11 has The Flash's lighting kick super from Injustice. War Machine in the VS games was just Iron Man with crappier Air combos and missiles instead of beams. The only thing he said that I'll hold him to is,"No one remembers the X-men" Everybody remembers the X-men. But I understand. He proved he's a company man. None of these guys have to tell the truth and they lie way more than people remember. Just watch past E3 shows. We should all be playing Anthem and Fallout 76 if developer promises meant anything.

The game was supposed to get a second season of DLC, with the second season having 4 capcom characters and 2 marvel characters, thus evening out the roster. However not many bought the base game and even less bought the DLC, so season 2 was cancelled and the roster was left with that imbalance. Idk why they wouldn't just do 3 and 3 every season instead of the 4 and 2 garbage

I honestly really liked the gameplay of MvCI, it’s possibly the best in the series. Too bad everything else about the game is terrible: the graphics, the roster, the music, etc. Sigh. I just really hope Capcom and Marvel (and Disney) can give the series another go, this time doing everything possible to get the series back where it belongs.

GarethXL Because I love the series, I grew up on the games, X men vs SF came out when I was 10 and it completely blew my mind. I love the gameplay, the characters, all of that stuff. I grew up in the 90’s loving Capcom games and marvel characters as well so I have a soft spot for the series, it’s one of my all time favorites. There’s nothing wrong with DBZF or BB Tag but those games honestly just don’t do it for me. I love DBZ but the characters in DBZF are too “samey” to me and as for BB Tag I’ve honestly never cared that much for BB or it’s characters, and none of the other games like persona, UNIB, etc either.

No, it was Sony Pictures who were at fault here. Disney have recently bought Marvel & FOX, with one being the parent company of all Marvel properties (including X-Men & Spiderman) and the another being the television network that had aired the classic cartoons of those properties in the 90's. However, Sony refused to give up the film rights licensing when it was supposed to (since it produced the live-action movies that had Captain Picard as Professor X, Gandalf as Magneto & Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, as well as the various Spideman films, whether it be the Tobey McGuire version or the Andrew Garfield version), so Disney just ignored the problem by creating the blatant X-Men knockoff Inhumans line-up instead, but had luckily ironed out the deal with Spiderman, but still had to put in Venom as DLC to coincide with the standalone Venom movie that was being released at the time. Yet, at the end of "Endgame" (the MCU movie crossing over the Avengers & Guardians of the Galaxy characters in a team-up against Galactus in a live-action recreation of the comic's "Infinity Gauntlet" story arc), Wolverine's 1992 mask & clawed gloves can be seen, which implies that, for now, the beef regarding rights to the X-Men license have been settled, with the House of Mouse obviously having the money to force Sony to give over the rights to the X-Men's most popular character, regardless of whether or not it was just a fleeting cameo or what have you.

Also FOX had distribution rights to X-Men on the movie front, but as far as comics and games went those characters could be used by Marvel as they are Marvel's intellectual property. The reason X-Men were not included was because there was nothing for Disney to market. MVC:I was a movie tie-in game, designed exclusively to hype up Infinity War and at the time the upcoming Captain Marvel film. All Marvel character decisions were exclusively made by Disney which is why all of the characters, barring Venom and Ghost Rider, are from the MCU films running at that time. I would not at all be surprised if the planned DLC were Wanda and Vision to complete the Avengers side of the roster.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who felt the graphics were fine. I liked the way the game looked and I loved the way the game played. I personally thought Infinite was fantastic. Though, to be fair, I also thought all previous VS games were fantastic. The roster of Inifinite also didn't bother me; I care more about gameplay than the characters I'm using, for the most part. Well, with exceptions. I was a little bummed about MODOK no longer being playable, though, as he was the core character for my main team in Marvel 3, and I loved him to death.

Unpopular Opinion: MvCI was a great playing game. It was a lot of fun, and what it did do it did well. If Disney hadn't been trying to screw over Fox at the time it would've had the X-Men and FF characters. It's a great example of executives screwing up what otherwise would've been a great entry.

I dived into the VS series with X-Men vs SF. MvC1, and 2, 3. Just bums me out about Infinite. It's great that the VS series would continue.. uh..the character designs looked horrible on Capcom's side. And hearing about the dlc / season pass was a train wreck. I avoided buying it altogether. It just did not look fun to play. The hilariously bad communication, regards to mvci Producer saying people don't know the X-Men.. right. Was someone high? Sigh infinite most likely hurt the series on so many levels. If there is another, hopefully one day: Unlockables (no dlc or season pass) A roster with plenty of characters to enjoy Music Stages Controls But seriously a complete experience. Not a half assed attempt like Infinite. I really miss the version of Capcom that made solid games. Not a buggy mess, or over indulgence on dlc. Shame Infinite could have been so much more.

Captain Marvel did see moderate success, since it was made by Disney/Marvel to counter DC's Wonder Woman, which was done to capitalize on Diana's cameo in Batman VS Superman and her obvious inclusion in the big budget Justice League movie, which was meant to counter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention any of the unreasonable demands Disney made. Shoestring budget, really short turnaround time to promote their movies, last minute inclusion of story mode, stopping support the second the game underperformed, stopping TOs from running the game, etc. I know they’re all evil money grubbing corporation but you have to feel for capcom. What do you do when one of the richest company in the world bends you over? They hold all the cards. Also. You’re dead wrong about the engine. The game was really well received by the community in that regard. It plays great! You keep talking about how the game is worse because it’s easier. I whole heartedly disagree. This game is a blast! Stone system lets almost all play styles viable. All the characters are pretty fun. There’s still a lot of people who still play just because it plays so damn well.

The idea behind MCU designs is to ditch the costumes altogether but include characteristics that are familiar to that character yet more "realistic." I liked it at first, but after all the MCU film fatigue and the fact that nobody wears their respective costumes anymore, I want the tights back.

Just wanted to make a couple corrections for the video/ things some of you may not have known about Infinite. Peter Rosas was actually the one who said the line about functions. That might not seem like it makes things different, but Rosas was a competitive player and sometimes they do favor characters depending on their moves or abilities rather than the actual. It was still a really bad take on the situation, but I don't think it is anywhere as insulting as "Nobody remembers the X-men". The DLC characters were actually slated to appear at launch, more specifically the first 3 but implied all 6 could've made launch. They were relegated to DLC because Capcom had no plans for DLC support at the time and thought it easier to make those 6 DLC. If anybody thought the game looks cheap, that is because it was extremely cheap. It didn't have any outside funding like SFV did, and MvCI's budget has been compared to that of a single season of Street Fighter V DLC (which is usually six characters, multiple costumes, and a couple stages). For anybody wondering why the graphics looked off, Capcom thought nobody would notice it during gameplay. I get where they're coming from, but they must've forgot the cinematic story mode like they forgot the X-Men. I do believe Marvel had more of an influence in the development of this game than any other Marvel vs Capcom game. I do know that the story mode was overlooked by Marvel Games. I know you said 5 new characters, but technically Thanos could be counted as new since he is practically remade and plays nothing like he does in Marvel vs Capcom 2. A 4-player mode similar to the 4-player tag in MK9 and 6-play tag in DBFZ was planned and then cut from the game not long after the last bit of DLC rolled out. These next few things are mostly separate from Infinite, but this is some things regarding the series as a whole and stuff about the future. After MvCI, Peter Rosas left Capcom to work at Marvel games. Rumors state this was to mend the relationship between Capcom and Marvel so that the series wouldn't be dead. Speaking of which, Marvel Infinite's exclusion at EVO wasn't really due to no one playing it (it was actually doing well in the tournament scene placing within the top 5). It was basically Marvel's doing that the game didn't appear at EVO (Although I'm sure it's shortcomings didn't help it get in either). Marvel was apparently really hard to work with during Marvel vs Capcom 3 as well. They were picky about some characters, and outright refused characters like Venom or the Fanatastic Four (the whole group appearing, not the characters as Human Torch was chosen out of the 4 to be in the game but got cut because of technical issues). Capcom apparently were the one's pushing for more X-Men characters like Deadpool in the game. Shuma Gorath almost didn't make it until Capcom begged for Marvel to let him in. Gill from Street Fighter III was supposedly set to appear in both Marvel 3 and Infinite. It is likely his assets were used for SFV instead. I don't want to get anybody's hopes up as this part gets very speculative, but Marvel vs Capcom 4 isn't as unlikely as some would think. It was clear that Infinite was supposed to be like SFV and receive support over time. Marvel and Capcom are still on good terms apparently as they've collaborated on several things and the Ultimate Marvel 3 re-release and Infinite are still being sold digitally for the last 4 years as opposed to Marvel 3's original release that lasted 2 years. The Marvel vs Capcom series was one of the most requested Marvel video game series. Arcade1up have been releasing ports of older MvC games in their products (which require approval from Marvel and Capcom), including games with limited releases like X-Men vs Street Fighter. Probably way too long of a post, but I'm sure someone will enjoy it.

DBFZ turned out to be even less fun than MvCI for me. It's tiring gameplay system lead to alot of the same teams being used. Don't believe me? Among many other things, I was disappointed with the noticeable lack of Vergil, especially given the POWER stone/gem storyline. He would've been the perfect character to guard it given his obsession with power. The dev team could've modified the fight to where Vergil has infinite Devil Trigger to essentially make him a mini-boss of sorts (Kinda like how playable Dante and Symbiote Spider-Man get their stats modified during the story mode.)

My big gripe was always the roster. Almost the whole base roster was just copy and pasted from MvC3, but with many omissions. There just wasn't any reason to play this over the old game. The old games always had weird oddball fantastic rosters of characters that provided excitement. Not so this time.

Strangely, the 'Just Functions' thing were inherent and important in tournament plays, which is said to be what is important in the fighting game scene. In tournament plays, you don't want to care for the character in the story and how they're like, how do they cloth like, how do they relate to others and you. In tournament plays, what's important to you is how you, the player, can use the tools given in the game to win the competition. That is why meta and tier list existed. And they don't give a crap to character background, only how they FUNCTION gameplay-wise. In tournament stuffs, you don't look at the character. You look at the PLAYERS using the tools given from the character. And it's weird that these people rejected the whole 'Function vs Function' thing despite tournaments inherently favoring functions. Does anyone mind explaining this disrespancy between how the function thing was disliked for MVCI, but tournament players are more caring for functions than character backgrounds and legacy and integrity?

In terms of what I think about this game, I do have the same opinion that Maximillan Dood has: This game is 10/10 in gameplay and mechanics, 6/10 (maybe 5) in presentation. The gameplay is SO addicting (especially at a high-level/competitive play), but the graphics, character roster, the menu screens by themselves as well as the cringey story mode are very underwhelming. And most of all, the lack of X-Men characters in my opinion was almost insulting. As you said, those characters were a crucial part of the beginning of this cross-over series. I personally blame Marvel a little bit more than Capcom because at least the gameplay is great. Marvel decisions in terms of their choice of characters definitively weight a bit more when it comes to put these two companies in the scale to figure out who's more responsible of this disaster of a game. Also, Capcom did fix certain things on MvCI that even today they haven't fix in Street Fighter V. Specifically the netcode. The netcode implementation in MvCI is definitively better than SFV, ironically. All that being said, it is sad that this game turned out to be like it did. This could have been so much better, and even more saddening, Capcom or Marvel didn't care to try to fix those issues and just let the game die. I hope in the future they come with redemption with a new MvC game that really brings out what we look for in a Marvel vs Capcom sequel.

A definitive "Bravo" sir for the absolutely great work done on the Channel, and the very pertinent reflexions and opinions (Yes Marvel vs Capcom 2 had a horrible soundtrack and disppointing backgrounds that looks far inferior to Marvel vs Capcom plus some Capcom Caracters added there are clearly a Joke, while the Captain Comando / Jin / Stryder Hiryu introduced in 98 fitted well the Marvel Roster). And yes SF III Third Strike was a delight technically to play and graphically the bast looking design and animation in 2D for SF (superior to Capcom vs Snk 2 clearly). THANK YOU

The X-Men helped define the entire "vs" franchise. To just omit them entirely was the immediate downfall of the 'Infinite' title. You can have all the bells & whistles you like, but X-Men vs. Street Fighter came along when X-Men the Animated Series pretty much dominated my generation's weekday afternoons & Saturday mornings. There's a strong emotional attachment to those characters specifically because of the groundbreaking elements that series brought to television & being able to have playable versions of them in a visually-stunning arcade game was just beyond everything a fan could ever want. Without question, it sent The X-Men's popularity into the stratosphere & it never really stopped; hence XmenTAS remains one of the biggest selling points for Disney Plus. I remember that executive's words around 'Infinite's' release & I could hear almost every fan of the franchise respond with a resounding "WHAT?!" He clearly had no idea of the history of the game & the importance of those characters, so of course 'Infinite' bombed...big time

I think gameplay wise a lot of people actually like this game, but the horrible roster (with no X-Men for example), horrible visuals, and other smaller things, like the Marvel character music remade to mirror the movie music more, were some of the main issues with the game. Outside of the greedy DLC practices, I'd say Disney are much more to blame for what went wrong than Capcom was (though they certainly aren't saints here either).

Some wrong things in your analysis... In the first place assist weren't replaced by infinity stones, they were replaced by the immediate tag mechanic, and the stones replaces the X-factor, but ultimately that wasn't the main issue with the game. And as there were people that didn't like the 2v2 announce, many others loves to hear that, and again that wasn't the problem with the game, every Fighting game sacrifices a bit of old audience with the hope of bigger new audience, but that doesn't make them fail
