The whole story reminds me of a dnd game with a GM who had cooked up so many "clever" twists that he seriously got pissed when we anticipated them and punished the whole party regardless and still went through with the story. Oh you saw through the raven trying to get your name and spent the whole session to avoid saying it..well he picked it up somewhere else...bam!

I remember really hating the fact the game was time gated and severely punished you for adventuring around but then appreciated it later on. Most games will give you some really important quest or something and you can simply take your time with no repercussions, but pathfinder really drilled home that you need to complete the main quests as they come or risk your barony falling. Not implemented perfectly, but still I can appreciate them trying to create the sense of urgency.

In fact, the game gives you too much time and you have to spend hundreds of days (literally hours of game time) just doing repetitive kingdom management (if you didn't turn it off) or clicking "next day" hundreds of times (if you turned it off) in between progressing the story.

The raven in Varnhold Vanishing is not a soul eater. It's Vordecai's intelligent raven familiar. The raven simply relayed the protagonists name to the subservient soul eaters.

Correct. The raven only makes the Soul Eaters aware of your names. Also, there is supposedly a way *not* to give the Ravens a name. But Owlcat claims no one ever found that path. My guess is if you get all 3 burners and skip the return trip you can somehow then figure your own way in. Also, a Chaotic character does *not* have to fight Stefano in the War of the River Kings. Much like evil Rulers can turn Hargulka on Tartuk, chaotic characters can convince Irovetti that Stefano made a deal with you to betray him.

@@FennelRPG Thing is, you can keep hiding your name from the Raven and the Faceless Sisters, but when you return to the camp after finding all 3 sisters (and burners) one of them still somehow knows your name and announces it aloud for the raven to hear with nothing you can do about it (other than just not returning to camp presumably).

Funfact: if you are ALONE when you trigger the Technic league encounter you won't be taken as a slave, instead the leader "doesn't like your snout" and decides to kill you for being ugly, regardless of how high charisma you might have or pretty your character model is.

I STILL can't believe what Tristian did. Unfortunately, I don't know how my party would have survived the rest of the game had I killed him or benched him. He's just clearly the obvious choice for party healer. I think the whole arc leading up to the revelation of his betrayal underscored how critical he was to survivability in the sometimes quite brutal scenarios that the game puts you in.

Really appreciate you making this - eventually I had to drop the game because I felt so many gameplay issues added up to prevent me from enjoying it, but I still wanted to see how the story panned out. Looks like I stopped just before things got interesting as well, the chapters up until then felt somewhat disconnected and weren't providing enough of an incentive for me to push through the gameplay issues

Just wanted to add something because few people know that : you can actually withold your name and never let the raven learn it. For that you have to never give your name (obviously) and skip the fight against the sisters at the barbarians camp. Then in the valley of the dead, instead of opening the door with the incencers or whatever, you use the bane spell on the door, which will open it. IRC the lore refers to darkness opening the door, but since the darkness spell didnt make it in the game, they used the bane spell instead.

@@FennelRPG The defaced sister in the barbarian camp learns your name from somewhere else (unexplained, but it isn't hard to learn the name of a neighboring monarch when you're not a talking bird) and shouts it out to the raven if you return. You don't get to affect that in any way other than never visiting the camp again.

Crazy how Wotr was another scale, in kingmaker you could finish the game lv16, in Wotr 16 is act 4 or so, not to mentaion the enemys and people around you, in kingmaker meet a almost deity in the end, in Wotr you are dealing with super mega powerfull individuals so far as act 3. I love how they step up the writing as well, like in kingmaker the hellknights being just mean, but in Wotr you can see how good they are at what they do, and how it makes sense to behave like that dealing with pure evil like the vilians of Wotr.

The hellknights you meet in kingmaker were part of a quest that was written by a Kickstarter backer. That whole quest is very poorly written and it sticks out like a sore thumb

@@sixseven404 No, which is why so many people dislike it. It's a mandatory quest, and you need to resolve it somehow. The game also doesn't give you the option to just kill the characters early (you can command your guards to detain and execute the hellknights but they just leave)

Fyi you can kill creatures with regeneration like trolls, the linnorm, etc with coup de gras attacks. And when Nyrissa has you come alone and then betrays you in act one/two at the verdant Chambers area you can escape by running past the monsters to the main area exit; as long as the monsters aren't right behind you it will let you zone out, if they are right behind you just pop in and visibility potion and leave when they wander away. You'll take a handful of attacks of opportunity but it shouldn't be too bad if you can boost your speed

for escaping, using invisibility makes everything easy. which is why it's catered more towards martial characters. a mage or a wizard would only need an invisibility spell ready and one athletics checks to survive.

the two companions Regongar and octavia, idk if it was patch or not but one of my friends ended up rushing the first part of the main quest and somehow skipped their encounter so he didnt have the option of getting them. also the Guardian of the bloom encounter where u have too run is pretty much my most hated part of this whole game. i played as a sorcerer and had too save scum at least 50 times too get out of their due too pretty much getting one shot on challenging difficulty. Btw love the videos keep it up

I'm not sure if they patched it in later, but in the journal entry for that quest, Linzi makes it very clear that she thinks it's a trap and she strongly recommends that you bring invisibility potions. Using one basically lets you run past all the enemies, so I highly recommend doing that if you play the game again

First things first : very nice video :P thank you for doing this . Second things second : play the game in the way you find it most fun . ... however I don't think that making a decisions based of an outcome or reward (that your in game character has no way of knowing at the time) is the "best way of doing things" (unless ofc that's your favorite way). I strongly recommend roleplaying in role play games when it comes 2 ur decisions (especially on your first play thru ).

AWESOME VIDEO! VERY, VERY HELPFUL! I liked Kingmaker, but I was, (well, still am) frustrated about how quickly and easily certain quests could be broken, missed, or never seen because of the time mechanic. I really hate it when there are super-secret endings that rely on knowledge that is frustratingly difficult to get and when there aren't really any actual hints about what's important. I get that it's fun to explore, but even exploring in this game hurts you if you visit a place before a quest is ready there or too early in the chain to unlock certain options by visiting other places first. It's very, very annoying. I like playing games without guides, but this had so many "if" and "then", and "or" layers built into it that quests could break by being too good and being able to fight particular battles as soon as you got them instead of wandering around looking for more pieces to fit into the puzzle. As fun as the game was, I had put in a stupid amount of hours only to have quests permanently break on me, too. I might give this game another go because I do enjoy good fantasy games and I like to finish what I start, but at this point I'd be starting from the beginning again. At least this time I'd have better guides.

Kudos for this! I held on watching this video for the longest time, but considering the money grab scam the game was on consoles, I finally gave in and watched this. I got to the aftermath of the Season of Bloom, but even on the ps5 it's a coin toss whether the game crashes or not every time I try to save or enter a new area... But it's a pretty great story! It feels like my defender of the true world druid would've fitted the overall story pretty damn nicely, but it is what it is.

Thanks for this. I've had this one & WoTR sitting in my GOG list for quite some time, but I wasn't sure it was worth the time investment. Did my best to pay minimal attention, playing this in a secondary window so as to not spoil it for myself. Those two games should keep me busy this winter. Not crazy about the end slide narration, which seems fitting for a children's novel, but no game is without flaws. This seems like a couple that can hold up to multiple playthroughs. I wonder if splitting the chapters of the games into seasons was a tip of the hat to the Dragonlance series from the 80s. One of the central stories was told in three novels, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, & Dragons of Spring Dawning.

I cannot wait to get this for WotR. Kingmaker's story seems quite straightforward after I played through it 2-3 times. But the sequel is kind of overwhelming on all fronts story-wise. Edit: The better solution to Stefano Mosconi is to let him leave, and after you turn all factions of Pitax against Irovetti you bluff that Mosconi is also on your side. He will never join you willingly, but Irovetti believes you that he has betrayed him, so he has no choice. You can have him rule Pitax: He's a weak ruler, but he guarantees the stability between the factions.

Got kinda distracted around 2/3 of the way through the game and over several different attempts at party creation and this is a helpful reminder of a story that was spread out over countless hours and that I may never fully finish. Man, thanks for the hard work! Honestly I've been trying to engage with more classic CRPG for a while and Pathfinder always catch me attention, but Kingmaker is not for me. I didn't find the story that amazing, it doesn't seem like an amazing adventure for the "work" that it demands, needing to go through a few very hard moments and a boring kingdom management thing. Thanks to your channel ( which I watched a lot of videos) I manage to try Baldur's Gate 1, which I'm almost finishing even tho not finding the game amazing ( it is ok, being that old, I can give it a few credits for what it have done for the genre). But Pillars of Eternity is amazing, I'm really felling the RPG vibes on that one, enjoying doing quests and the party development. I've started Divinity OS2 a bunch of times already, I think the game is amazing, very funny and enjoyable, but I don't know why I always end up forgetting abandoning it. Combat is amazing, but maybe too much combat, it kind of slow down the progress in the game.I'm planning to go back to that one soon.

If there is one thing i dont like about this game is how important events are tied to alignment and not skills : Only Good can spare Slavania Sister , only Neutral can spare the mites and kobolts at old sicamore , only Lawful can save Kresten and Jhod .... I really wish they use skill checks instead ...

That's like saying you don't like Wizard because how their power is tied to spells and not normal attacks. Using alignment checks is what make this game unique. I mean, you don't go around asking Wizards to be able to hack and slash just like Fighters. I would even argue that these alignment checks are what give meaning to the alignment system, which would otherwise be pretty pointless. They give meaning to the decisions that you made, show you the consequences of your actions. One thing the game can change, in this aspect, is allow the option to use companion's alignment to proceed and not only your own. It's quite inconsistent for the game to allow you to use companion's skills to pass checks but not their alignment.

I'm actually on the other side of the argument... I like alignment choices and the fact that there are plenty of opportunities to naturally change player's alignment with in-game decisions. What I don't like, is that a lot of narratively-substantial things (including the "true ending") are tied to RNG-dependent skill checks. I think that the threshold-based system for ability checks (like the one from Pillars of Eternity) is way better suited for cRPG experience.

I just downloaded it yesterday, going to start my first playthrough as a ginger human grenadier. I was unaware about major choices bring tied to alignment rather than a skill check. That's pretty unique in my opinion, I fw it in theory. I'll have to see how I like it as I play

You can find some guides that'll help with Kingmaker, but with some timely respecs you can see pretty much everything in one go with any character. As for WotR theres no right answer because of the mythic paths, Id say grab a full divine caster and go Angel myself though

You can confront the Lantern King without the secret ending, you only get the option to actually kill him via the secret ending though

Yeah some ranged mobs are coded to attack certain classes or something to that effect, I forget the specifics, but some ranged mobs will chase one character no matter what across whole maps etc

I tried to watch this 3 times, and I fell asleep every time. Are Pathfinder's stories really this random and uninteresting? Perhaps it was because you talked more about gameplay in this one? I've had no trouble finishing all your other long story supercuts in the past.
