when I was service in ROKA. I never heard of M76 designation, as I was just a draftree grunt. Most common name was 방탄헬멧 or 방탄모(bullet proof hat) or unofficial and civilian name 하이바(fiber).

저도 '구형방탄'이라고만 알고 있었지, 해외에서 M76이라는 이름으로 불리는지는 이번 영상 보고 처음 알았네요
@CluelessSoldier-06695 ай бұрын
It's preferred for military collectors, reenactors, and military historians to refer to a piece of Military gear by its designation. The term "bulletproof" and "bulletproof hat" is too broad of a term. So military collectors and historians picked up the Iraqi designation of "M80" or other unofficial names for the helmets for its military designation. Also "bulletproof" is VERY much a civilian term, as in the civilian world they like the word of "proof". Every helmet and vest has a different rating of ballistics, so we never truly use the word "bullet proof".
@hishot10783 ай бұрын
You are correct. M76 is a name given by helmet collectors after the year the helmet was accepted by the active Korean military.

I served in the Republic of Korea Army from early 2022 to the late of 2023 and was issued this helmet. Although there was a KBH2000 in our battalion's warehouse, it was not given to me. In Korea, it is commonly called 구형방탄(old type bulletproof)helmet The 13th Special Mission Brigade, an Army special forces unit, also used that helmet until just a few years ago due to several supply issues. They were a unit that received GPNVG, which sparked controversy when a photo of the GPNVG18 mount on the m76 helmet was released.

I saw this helmet is still in use by ROK Marine Corps.. interesting indeed seeing new uniform pattern, new pixelated-style camo, new equipment.. but old helmet
@ThePieMaster2196 ай бұрын
@Etendard1708 That's the juxtaposition of the Korean military I think, they're only now slowly starting to replace water canteens from the Korean War. I don't mean the design, they were LITERALLY from the Korean War. Korean servicemen will tell you the same thing, some of the old hump packs' frames (More close to the ALICE packs if I recall) would have their paddings worn off and would dig into the soldiers' backs. Could really use some gear replacement instead of building a new golf course for the star generals :/ EDIT: unrelated to gears per se but it's always interesting to see that South Korea fields M48s- Even the 90mm variant, although upgraded, and at the same time field F35s and K2 BPs. Oh, and OG T-80Us.

@point22276 ай бұрын
@@ThePieMaster219 Good thing is that it seems they've issued KBH-2000s and the newer helmets (ones with rails) to most of the front-line units nowadays. I expect the M76 to become reserve-unit gear after a few more years.

Finally someone make a video about this helmet, I got four of them two week ago for a price of two PASGT helmet. The argument about type 58 rifle can penetration M76 helmet is not fair, Most modern helmet still can't stop rifle round from AK and M16.
@ThePieMaster2195 ай бұрын
It was a media circus back in the 90s apparently when the Sokcho Submarine Infiltration incident happened, one ROKA casualty was shot in the head in which- Expectedly, the helmet did not stop the bullet. Colloquially being called a "bulletproof" helmet, this led to people questioning "Well shit it didn't stop THAT bullet, why is it even called it as such?". This is the rough condensation of what went down. But yeah you're right, I wrote it elsewhere but it's a miracle if a modern helmet happens to be able to stop a bullet from an assault rifle caliber. There's only like a handful of recorded cases.

Helmet was produced in 70s. During the 70s, there were no such helmets can stop rifle bullet. Shrapnel and heavy blow protection was the standard.

Anecdote I found in Korean source is that is was originally a personal project, not (at the time) approved by the government, of Han Pil Sun. He had to get loan from his wife, worth about five months of his salary to fund the project.

Surprisingly because he figured if the Israelis could make their own, so could South Korea. I was actually surprised to learn that the M76 had better ballistic capabilities than the steelpot

I found one of the variations of the M90 when I was in Iraq in 2004. I was so put off by the design that I didn’t even consider taking it as a souvenir. I felt it was absolutely worthless as a ballistic helmet and barely worthwhile as a hard hat. I would rather wear a patrol cap into combat than one of those.

@ 14:17 you see the officer on the right wearing british dpm camouflage uniform. The U.K. exported a lot of older model DPMs to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war. You can even see it worn by captured Iraqis in old videos of the 1st Gulf War.

No.
@ThePieMaster2196 ай бұрын
Never. There have been miracle stories of PASGTs and ACHs or (if reliably told) PATKAs from India stopping AK rounds, but there's many reasons as to why the bullets managed to be stopped: Either the angle of the hit, or the grade of the munition that was being fired. That and for PATKAs they have an entirely different construction anyway from what I recall
@Wildwest896 ай бұрын
For that matter I’ve read anecdotal stories of M1 helmets deflecting rifle rounds in WWII but that doesn’t mean the helmet was designed to do that
@Rokaize4 ай бұрын
Nah. The vast majority of casualties are from shrapnel and shell fragments. This is upwards of 75% of all casualties. Even more so in large scale wars. Helmets will stop a lot of that stuff. Which results in thousands surviving wounds that would otherwise be fatal. The American m1 saved tens of thousands of lives according to the military
