When Bret Hart left the WWF after Survivor Series 1997, the other members of the Hart Foundation had a decision to make. Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart decided to go to WCW with Bret while Owen Hart was stuck in the World Wrestling Federation. Owen could've stayed at home, but his lengthy WWF contract meant that he wouldn't be able to seek work elsewhere. And so, Owen Hart returned to the WWF in December of 1997. Owen was repackaged as "The Black Hart", the sole survivor of the Hart Foundation, and he initially set his sights on Shawn Michaels, the man who was instrumental in the "Montreal Screwjob".
The WWF had an incredible oppurtunity to make a main event player out of Owen Hart due to the circumstances surrounding Bret's exit, and at first it appeared that the company where going to give Owen a chance. Owen surprised everyone when he showed up at the D-Generation X pay per view towards the end of 1997, but in no time at all, Owen was moved into a rivalry with Triple H. Hunter Hearst Helmsley soon got injured, and Owen's push was seemingly over before it got started. This video looks at the return of Owen Hart following the 1997 Survivor Series and Owen's repackaging as "The Black Hart".

There are rumors out there that say that Austin prevented anything from materializing as far as a push for Owen due to what happened during their Summerslam match. Sadly if that's true, this may have been a factor that led to his death because I don't think they put him through the Blue Blazer gimmick and suggest the stunt that killed him if he was a main eventer or upper midcarder like he could have been.

Basically, backstage politics and HBK's ego prevented Owen winning the title and eventually led to him being put back into the Blue Blazer gimmick. The rest, as they say, is history! I fully believe Owen should have won the title on Raw and then dropped it back to HBK at the Rumble due to interference from Triple H. Still could have had Stone Cold v HBK at Mania but it would have given the company a chance to see how Owen handled being top dog, even if it was for a short while. Then Owen should have beaten Triple H at Mania, then turned heel on the following Raw by attacking the newly crowned champion Stone Cold! Owen not being pushed to main event level and being lumbered with a gimmick that eventually led to his death is the biggest travesty in WWF/WWE history!!!

Great video. I think sadly Owen had a number of things against him. 1) Vince's ego. Owen was probably a way for McMahon to send a message to Bret. 2) Stone Cold refusing to work with Owen after the botched piledriver. (This I cannot fault Austin for, because Austin came so close to being paralyzed if that was me, yeah, I'd refuse to work with the guy that nearly crippled me too.) However, in reality, nothing small like that causes a person's career to derail. Imagine if somebody called the Rock a nugget as he was developing into the super star that he would become. Do you think it would have derailed him? If Owen was meant to be a top guy he would have been. As good as he was in the ring, there was a lot of guys that were good in the ring in that era, and it resulted in Owen being a solid midcarder, and that's just the way it was.

Shawn still would’ve left in 1998. He cleared the casket. He may have had a back injury but it wasn’t from hitting the casket. He knew Vince would pay him to stay home rather than go to WCW.

I remember when Owen passed that Triple H cried on the camera talking about losing his friend and it seemed from that interview they were close. Were they not really close? Seems weird he would lobby hard not to lose to Owen or is this just an example of how much Triple H hated to lose.

I don't think a program between Stone Cold and Owen Hart would've taken place after Wrestlemania 14, even if they tried to give Owen a push at that time. Stone Cold still had heat with Owen after the Summerslam 1997 incident and says that Owen never apologized for that night. Let's not forget, personal heat is what caused Stone Cold to nix a feud with Jeff Jarrett around 1997/1998.

Great vid, covering all the points that showed he was just repeatedly let down. I actually created a thread on WFigs forum with this very topic in mind but more so that DX making fun of him caused him not to be taken seriously, along with management wasting him quickly after he came back. The potential to make him a top tier player was immense. Such a shame

Thank you for doing this video. I always thought the "Black Heart" character was abandoned too quickly, as I had been a fan of Owen Hart and liked that he seemed to be getting a main event push. The story made sense and had that touch of reality that enhanced the story. I thought they would push the Owen-Michaels feud further and I was looking forward to it. As to your explanation as to their motive and keeping the Michaels-Austin feud hot for Wrestlemania; this was often the problem with WWF booking. They were so focused on pay per views and it gave their story arcs a sense of being contrived and also predictable. When a hot angle grew organically, they wouldn't go with it, if it got in the way of their plans to have the pay per view main events that drew the most money. Perhaps it did earn them money, but it often weakened the product in the months leading up to Wrestlemania because it got so predictable and dull. I personally would rather have seen an Owen-Michaels feud and Wrestlemania main event, even if it meant Austin would be involved with other angles.

The real opportunity that they missed in this was not just having Shawn drop the European title to Owen instead of HHH (I know Shawn wouldn't have done that, don't @ me). Sarge mandates Owen as the challenger, beats Michaels on that Raw. Owen, boosted by the win is propelled to get a WWF title shot, HHH costs him the match. Everything else flows as happened but they give fans that big moment.
