Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of The First Ever WWF Monday Night Raw
If you would like to support the channel and my work, please consider becoming a channel member: / @wrestlingbios
When it comes to the most recognizable wrestling television show in the world, Monday Night Raw tops the list. The flagship show of the WWE has been on the air since 1993, setting records along the way to becoming the longest running weekly episodic TV show in history.
The very first epiosde of WWE Raw happened back in January 1993 and throughout the years, the show would evolve and change with the times. Back then, the concept of a weekly live wrestling show was a unheard of. The WWF's main television shows were recap shows or talk shows, with the in-ring action coming from taped events or house shows (with the exception of special shows such as Saturday Night's Main Event). Weekly live wrestling had not been attempted yet within the United States, and Vince McMahon was prepared to give it a shot. Replacing the WWF's previous show "Prime Time Wrestling", Monday Night Raw made it's debut on the USA Network, changing the landscape of weekly wrestling shows forever.
In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we take a look at the very first episode of Monday Night Raw. Along with every match, we also take a look at every segment and we also discuss the concept of this new weekly wrestling show. Topics covered include:
00:34 - Early WWE Shows before Raw
02:53 - Vince McMahon switching to a weekly live TV format
06:32 - The Manhattan Center and why it was used for WWF Raw
08:15 - The very first WWF Raw intro
09:20 - The first ever WWF Raw Match featuring Yokozuna
12:04 - The Steiner Brothers appear on the first ever WWF Raw
13:48 - WWF Headlock on Hunger
14:31 - Shawn Michaels vs Max Moon
16:52 - The Undertaker vs Damian DeMento
- Much More!

Christopher Nicholson that is false. Raw was a normal 1 hour show that was just like Superstars. Nitro was on Monday just to tick off Vince's nerves. But Nitro was the first of it's kind. It wasn't until 1997 Raw changed to be their flagship show as it is now more then jobber matches and 2 hours. So Raw ripped off Nitro.

I remember the first Raw. I remember begging my parents to let me stay up and watch. They finally agreed, and I didn't miss an episode until 2001. Those were the good old days. I haven't watched a full episode of Raw since 2016, and haven't watched at all since 2019. It's so sad to see what it has become.

I would argue that the seeds for The Attitude Era were planted way back in 93 with the debut of Monday Night Raw, which seemed like more of an adult themed show (the ECW-like venue and audience, the ring girls in bikinis, ect).

Mick Foley winning the world belt would be a good night to do a video on. 1) WCW - The Night of the infamous "finger poke of doom" where Nash laid down and handed the world belt to Hogan, to reform the NWO. The very belt he had just beaten the undefeated Goldberg for. Raw was a taped show where Nitro was live and the Raw results had leaked to Tony Schiavone who thought it would be a good idea to spoil what was going to happen on Raw. He hoped fans would laugh that someone like Foley had won a world title and they would all stick to watching WCW. What happened tho was a few hundred thousand people changed the channel to watch Foley win the belt. 2) WWF - Foley got easily one of the top 5 audience pops in wrestling after winning the belt. The haters thought fans would hate Mankind winning the belt and flock to watch Nash hand the belt to Hogan, but it was the opposite.

There was 19 minutes and 29 seconds of wrestling on that first Monday Night Raw unbelievably. I know the show was only 1 hour long back then but still they could’ve had more than 1 match go longer than 4 minutes, even Bob Backlund’s dark match against Damien DeMento (who wrestled twice that night, wrestling the Undertaker in a 2 minute 24 seconds match at the end of the programme) went 7 and a half minutes

It wasn't about the matches at that time like the current fan goes crazy over....more about theatrics and over the top characters which were way more entertaining

I remember Max Moon's debut had McMahon yelling, "Next week! The debut of The Comet Kid!". Then after a week or 2, McMahon says, "Max Moon to join us", completely out of nowhere. That's a really poor main event: Undertaker no-selling again.

I wonder what happened to that innovation driven mind of Vince, now he's an out of touch stubborn egotistical old man that's killing his own creation by refusing to accept that it's time for him to pass the torch in order for the innovation to continue.

Vince McMahon was never an innovator, he had people in his ear giving him good ideas and talking him out of the stupid ones, those people that were in his ear back then are no longer there, so as a result, we have this unfiltered, out of touch, nonsensical old coot who thinks he's putting on good wrestling shows

I didn't get to watch episode 1, because it was past our bedtime and my mother screwed up trying to record it for me. I set up the recording for the second episode, and I could probably count on 1 hand the number of episodes I didn't watch for the next 10 years 😅. My best friend in school and I bonded over our mutual love of wrestling.

Bartlett made a joke referencing the "Long Island Lolita" case aka the Joey Buttafucoco/Amy Fisher attempted murder trial during his stint as a color-commentor. Also during the early years of Raw, Vince McMahon thought it was great idea to have a fan-vote for the OJ Simpson trial asking if they thought he was innocent or guilty.
