By the time Fabregas was 21 he was already on the same level as Xavi and Iniesta. His big problem was that he went to Barcelona too soon. He expected to slowly integrate into Xavi's place on the team because Xavi was getting old but three years later Xavi was still Xavi and Fabregas was still waiting. And he'd pretty much wasted his time there. If he'd stayed at Arsenal just for those years he spent at Barca then he's be a legit Premier League legend. He was already in the conversation for best midfielder in the Prem before he turned 20.

I don’t really see the whole argument of Guardiola playing him in a deeper role at Barcelona. First of all as far as I remember he was often playing that false 9 position in 2011/12 leading up to the the 2012 Euros where Spain used him the same way. Second of all you have to remember that Fabregas played 3 seasons at Barcelona and only the first one was under Pep. 2012/13 was under Tito Vilanova and 2013/14 Tata Martino was the head coach. You could have at least mentioned that cause I feel like many people watching this video will now assume Fabregas played the majority of his time at Barça under Pep while it was only one season.

Cesc Fabregas chose to leave Arsenal to return to his home club, FC Barcelona. He knew that he would take a demotion from Arsenal's No. 1 to a rotation player at FC Barcelona. His dream was probably to play for FC Barcelona with his old friends from the academy like Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi. Fabregas's intense and clinical style did not fit the FC Barcelona way because he was willing to complete low percentage medium-to-long balls, which goes against the tika-taka possession style. Fabregas brought results and assists, but he would never be the prime creator with Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi. At least, Fabregas knew after three seasons that he was wasting away at FC Barcelona, so he left for Chelsea. Fabregas won the 2012-13 La Liga, 2011-2012 Copa del Rey, 2011 and 2013 Supercopa, 2011 UEFA Super Cup, and 2011 FIFA Club World Cup. Trophies only mean so much until the player wants serious game time or a bigger role on the team. As a key player, Fabregas won trophies (2 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup/1 runner-up FA Cup medal, 1 Football League Cup, and 1 UEFA Europa League) for Chelsea, so he got what he wanted in the end. The later injuries are not surprising because early in his career, Fabregas was an intense attacker, so the wear and tear finally caught up to him. Fabregas is one of the greatest Spanish midfielders of his era.

Dude, you're oversimplifying things. Cesc may have been successful with the Spain NT, but G/A is NOT all there is to football. Everyone at the time knew, that Xavi and Iniesta were the main guys on those teams (which of course had many other great players, among them Fabregas). At Barca, Cesc failed. Plain and simple. We do not know who is at fault (Cesc himself, Pep, the board etc.), but you are making it sound like Cesc was that hidden gem at Barca (again citing those G/A numbers, which are not everything in football) and was mistreated by Pep. The reality is that Cesc could not bench Xavi (who was pushing early 30s at the time) or Iniesta (who was exiting his prime when Cesc left in 2014). Cesc played under Pep, Tito and Tata at Barca and eventually was sold when Enrique became the boss, that's 4 different managers. And here is the thing: Cesc was never the type of midfielder Xavi or Iniesta were, he was more of a attacking midfielder, that's why he had more G/A (ofc he was really talented as well, but he did play a different role). So he could not replace them at the Barca system. The thing is he could not play this role at Barca, because the main creative outlet up front was none other than Leo Messi, in his prime. In other words, there was no room for a player like Cesc at Barca.

I have always thought he was a more direct version of Xavi and better than him. Xavi played too slow and was too safe, while good at keeping possession multiple games were drawn or lost because he prioritized possession over attack. If he had the dribbling of Iniesta he would’ve been the best player ever. I honestly think that if FCB were going to insist on playing Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, they could’ve just kept him as a false 9 like they did and move Messi to the right and cut in on his favored foot, Dani Alves provides width with Pedro/David Villa/Sanches/Neymar on the left and when defense was needed have Abidal play or when attacking Maxwell/Alba. Also talking about Ozil he was great as well, extremely direct and a decent dribbler, he lacked the stamina however. Honestly if I were to make an all time 3 in the middle it would be Fabregas, Viera, Iniesta. Direct as well as patient, a pure destroyer and someone who can wriggle out of trouble with dribbling.

Some mid 80s born players like Rooney, Fabregas, Torres, Podolski peaked too early. Still went on to have amazing careers. I personally never felt that Fabregas was a Barca kind of player. Would've excelled more at Madrid. The timing of his move wasn't the best. Had he moved to Barca one year earlier left one year later, he'd have one more league and one CL at least. Those extra years at Arsenal limited him. His Chelsea stint was satisfying to watch.
