It's not so much the number of cylinders, it's the displacement and RPM. It comes in at 200 hp per liter. At the time, that was pretty good. Although, it's now obsolete. Even my Kawasaki ZX-6R makes 204 hp per liter naturally aspirated (636 CC at 15,000 rpm with 130 hp). No turbocharger required and just 91 octane.

In the movie they did speed up the frames to give the appearance that the car was going faster than what it was. This was very common in movies back then, particularly low budget ones. So yeah the car was real but multiple scenes in the movie the car was not going as fast as it may look.

I was probably 11 or 12 when I first saw the Wraith in the early 90s. Even as a kid and still to this day, I think it was such a good movie with a great story, a great soundtrack, and decent acting.

Wasn’t even a Pontiac frame. The frame was a custom built chassis for making a fiero lighter to be able to compete in road racing designed by a racing chassis builder . They used that chassis but stretched it out . There for not even the same as the fiero either

WOW! This was so nice to see!!! Bob would love this!!! I was a designer at Chrysler for 11 years. Bob was my first design manager in the studio in Highland Park for 3 years before we moved to Auburn Hills. He showed me this car and some of the development as the car was completed. What doesn't come across in the photos is how stunning the root beer colored paint is on the car and how generous the curves really are. These were the last of the themes before we got into the LH cab-forward cars and after the K-cars. Bob was an absolutely terrific guy, awesome car designer and very much a car guy through and through. I designed the exterior to the first generation Neon with Bob as my manager. I couldn't ask for a more terrific guy to work with. You should seek out his son Dean who could probably add to more info. I saw Bob about 4 years ago at a friends funeral. Another awesome designer, Michael Burton (look him up too!). Bob was having a lot of health issues but was still his same vibrant self. It was so nice to catch up with him. Thanks again for showing this.

This is my favorite movie of all time! In the early 90s, I used to go out to Tucson, to cruise around, looking for the locations. In 2009, i had the opportunity to do a scene with David Sherrill (Skank) in In/Significant others. I hollered "Skank!" at him from across the floor, and everyone went silent, thinking I had just insulted their star, LOL. You can imagine how relieved they all were, when he hollered "Yeah! Man, I haven't heard that one in a LONG time!" back at me. We shook hands and started talking. We suddenly realized that everyone was just standing there and watching us, thinking we were old friends, LOL. Really nice guy.

Never mind the car itself, I fell in love with the engine sound from the movie. Not sure if that is the engine's original sound. But the movie engine sound is what I will always remember. Sorry, The sound in the movie was an over dub. Made to sound other worldly. Personally, I Thought It Sucked ! The cars real sound was much better. I heard it run one night they were moving it around the basement level at CTC. My wife worked there and volunteered at the museum some weekends. 👊😎👍

I was 16 years old when that came out. I loved that movie. I even watched it a couple of weeks ago as it is here on KZbin for free! The Wraith/Turbo Interceptor inspired a different Dodge creation that no one really knows about. A few a blocks from my house in the Indian Hills neighborhood of Hopkinsville, KY there was a guy really into late 60s and early 70s muscle cars. There was one car from the 1980S he liked the styling of but not the complete package. The 1996 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z. The factory car was front wheel drive, 2.0 L Turbo with double overhead cans. The cars total output at the crank was like 160HP. The interior had a lot of plastic parts that would get brittle over the years and break. The seats ripped quickly, the headliner fell after just 6 mo. Well this guy loved the looks of the 1st generation Daytina Turbo Z but hated everything else. I'm not sure who he knew for pulling what strings but he managed to get an 87 Daytona Turbo Z complete body but with a transmission hump, drive shaft channel, and the rear shaped out for a rear axle. He built it with a 340ci block, alloy heads and a 6pack of 2brl carbs custom drive shaft. Customers drive linkages as well as A arms. I was crazy fast when he was done as it should hive been putting 350hp to 380 to the ground

I was born in 78 so I was still a kid when this movie came out. I still remember everything about this movie today. I've seen it many times since then and when my son is a little older I will show it to him as well.

My brother and I rented this on vhs when it came out. We watched it at least 10x before returning it. I loved we went down across the valley and got a box of goober line. The chase with the Trans am was awesome. The turbo interceptor was absolutely beautiful and still is to this day. Never knew about the 4cylinder and 200 mph and didn't care! I honestly think that car is the best looking prototype of all time, name a better one please!!!

For the longest time, my 2nd favourite movie car growing up, being an Aussie the Mad Max car was top spot, but either way, I had watched The Wraith dozens of times and was always in awe of the car every time, years later learning it was a 4cyl gave me even more appreciation for it.

In 1986 I was 9, I remember seeing this movie on vacation in Lake Tahoe. Then I never saw it again for years and years, and I never knew the name of it to look for it...it was always a faded memory to me. Then, years and years later, I saw it on tv, I was in my 30s by then...it brought me right back to that family vacation and reminded me of good times long ago...

The Film was ok. What stand out was the car. Little note to the "twin over head cams". Normaly its called DOHC Double OverHead Camshaft. And for the people they like crazy cars with massiv wings should look into "Zakspeed Capri group 5". This beast was first raced 1980 with a 1,7 Liter Turbo 600hp engine. The predecessor had an 1,4 Liter Turbo with 460hp. And on the Japan side of things there where the silhouette formula. To be honest the Dodge M4S Turbo was pretty late to the party.

When it comes to movies and cars, I am somewhat balanced (or at least try to be) I know there are people out there that know a way lot more than me about a particular engine or car and sometimes, if I try to be too much of a try hard and get very technical where I can't fully confirm something or it changes from model to model, I try to keep it in check. I have seen the DOHC label before, though not fully aware of what its all about I must admit. I do agree I think that the US got into the 4 Cylinder game late and did not reach its full potential sooner. Ackerman had mentioned, though others were happy with his 198.4 MPH speed he got, he knew it could have made 220 had they put more time into it.

This was an AWESOME movie!! Imagine pulling up to a stop light and looking over and seeing THIS car!!! Given the chance (and money) to own this, HELL YEAH!! I'd love to meet Charlie Sheen and just pick his brain about being in this movie with this car.
