After the fall of the Soviet Union, one of the very first things the new Polish government did was to completely exonerate Wiltold, promote him and posthumously award him the Order of the White Eagle for his actions.

America has Superman and Batman as its heroes. The Polish superhero is Captain Witold Pilecki. One of the founders of the anti-Nazi resistance movement in occupied Poland. A man who agreed to volunteer to go to Auschwitz and find out what was happening there. He even founded a resistance movement there. After 2 years, he escaped and submitted a report - the Pilecki Report. Participant of the Warsaw Uprising against the German occupiers. Afterwards, he was a participant of the anti-communist underground in Russian-occupied Poland. He was caught and tortured so cruelly that, as he himself said, Auschwitz was less cruel. Sentenced to death by the communist dictatorship. Murdered by a shot to the back of the head in the prison basement in 1948. His body is still being sought to this day.

Pilecki's Report became a book. "The Auschwitz Volunteer" and is an incredible read. It offers a more... "as it happened" account of the Holocaust that you can't find elsewhere and presents it in a surgical, analytical method that offers a rather strong analysis on the overall goings on in the camp. Most Auschwitz accounts are more intimate, and thus more emotional but as such, don't entirely explain the situation as a whole. Pilecki's does and really helps you understand everything from the social dynamics in the camp, how different groups interacted, how to organize resistance, etc. Pilecki does have a dry, dark sense of humor at moments throughout the book too, such as noting that the outer numbers and inner numbers of his Inmate number, 4859, both add up to 13 and thus wondering if this was a bad omen for him. Regarding the Holocaust and the Poles, you should also read "Story of a Secret State" by Jan Karski. It's a true story and an incredible one as well. Karski was an intel runner for the Polish Resistance. Him and Pilecki are some of Poland's biggest WWII heroes.
