The think tank is horrifying but ironically the DLC Old World Blues is probably one of the funniest of the DLC's. Very dark humor but certainly ravels in the ridiculous mess.

Yeah they come across as dark in this but when you play the dlc…they are kind of idiots. You easily outmanoeuvre them and even Mobius makes them seem incompetent, also just talking to them makes them easier to deal with later.
@RomnilWater
@RomnilWater Жыл бұрын
@chazo1367 well yes they're idiots but they're idiots that still have enough technical knowledge to do some scary stuff and have lost what little morality they had (if they even had any to began with, this is Fallout. I'm being generous) In some ways that's makes it scarier though there is the question whether they would survive contract with the outside wasteland. As you pointed out they were easily tricked.
@chazo1367
@chazo1367 Жыл бұрын
@@RomnilWater yeah true. But they seem to have lost most of themselves. By the time you meet them in game, they aren’t a threat? They are basically just intelligent lunatics that struggle socially. They likely wouldn’t survive contact with the main wasteland. The NCR or BOS would eat them alive.

The 1950's saw some magnificent and terrifying ideas thrown around that ranged from concept to the latest weapons issued to soldiers and products sold to civilians. That time's overall mindset persisted and festered in this world up until October 2077. What we were for a decade, this setting was for over a century. Then some of the greatest minds stewed for 200 years after the bombs fell, most of that being as brains in jars. Oh, and some have developed chem addictions. So while technically this is one of the few places where the greatest science and engineering of the old world is built on, it is erratic, impractical, obsessive, and outlandish. Of all the scientists and engineers who weren't stopped advancing by the bombs, the Enclave was probably the most rational in their developments, even if they did the least to push the envelope. It would take a far more level head to apply the science and engineering on display in Big Mountain. And beyond being responsible and rational, they'd need resources to put the good ideas into even limited production, and power to keep more dangerous elements at bay.

The overall theme of Fallout from the moment the Vault Dweller left vault 13 has been about ethics. It's incredibly interesting to see how various groups; military, government, scientific, etc, have handled things before and after the great war. In a lot of cases, a lack of accountability can lead people to do horrific things.

There is a term in the fallout world that is also the name of the DLC this comes from, old world blues. Being so focused on the past you cant see the present, and most people in new vegas suffer from it because the main point of new vegas is letting go.

Also I've noticed the Fallout series likes to play with wording. Originally the faciality used to be inside a giant mountain until a failed experiment conducted by the future Doctor Klein in the Y-0 research center, the mountain above the center was vaporized, leaving behind a giant crater and exposing the facility. So it went from being the Big Mountain... To the Big MT (Empty). And in Fallout 4 there's a DLC called Nuka-world that's a whole theme park based off the Nuka-Cola drink. And get the pun? Nuka-World (Nuke a World). In Fallout 3 the road sign to Pittsburgh has eroded just leaving "Pit" so the DLC and the city (and main quest area of that DLC's story) is called "The Pit." In New Vegas there's a small town with a motel that has an iconic dinosaur. There's a neon sign out front that says "No Vacancy" that has half it's light out leaving "No Vac" so the town is called _Novac._ There's more, but I'm blanking, it's really fun and adds more to the lore of the world.

Also in Fallout 3, Arefu, a small hamlet on a bridge in southern Maryland, got its name from a 'careful' sign for bridge merging, but with the first and last letters of the sign losing their battle to time, it became 'arefu' which is what the new residents chose to call it once they arrived.

Yes FIDO is a REAL unique weapon you can obtain in the Old World Blues DLC. And yes it has a dog's brain in it and it barks and growls at enemies and happily with you lol. The scientists at the Big MT have gone just a TAD bit insane since being just being brains in metal bodies. They don't even see themselves as human anymore.

The dlc in which these characters feature is one of the best ones in the game. What the Think Tank has done was definitely horrifying and yet the whole thing was very fun and interesting and probably one of the most amusing set of characters. The Think Tank are so deranged at this point they're more like 50s era mad scientists, crazy and funny at the same time.

Back on my first playthrough, I unknowingly picked up FIDO at some point and never got to use him until I was at the Divide. I was shooting the markmen and was running low on my main ammo so I switched weapons. and then I saw "FIDO" and got curious. At first I didn't see the ears, I didn't even hear the bark because I just wanted to shoot my way out. Once the firefight was over, I put the gun away and heard a pained yelp. Needless to say I screamed and panicked when I heard it.

If ya'll don't plan on playing a big old classic game like Fallout New Vegas, then I recommend watching Oxhorn's quest playthroughs! His commentary is nice to listen to, and he usually doesn't skip on looking for details! Plus the Old World Blues is much funnier than you think, a tiny little robot who screams about his useless function of craving tea cups, Dr. Zero's name being mistaken for Dr. O by his colleagues, the dog gun where it's a neat little lead gun that has cute droopy ears!

Considering that the prior DLC, Dead Money, really played into survival horror, Old World Blues had to be more lighthearted- despite the fact that it really should be the most terrifying.

A big part of what these shorts don't capture is the experience of truly playing the game. when you first arrive at Big MT. You yourself are a victim and I understandably angry, but with no real way to fight back. As you explore what's left, You realize just how much damage they did before the war after the war and how much they had still planned on doing. You grow to hate them, but by the end you realize the one scientist who split off, The one who's terrorizing Them And you- Hes the only one with a little bit of his mind left, and hes came to the conclusion. The world is better off without the think tank meddling in it any more than it already has. When asked why he simply wouldn't kill them if he is afraid of them getting out? He simply responded with "Because they're still my friends, even if they have lost their mind." The end choice was very divisive amongst players about what To Do with the think tank, but in the end, personally I saw that they had been in every sense Of the word, dulled and retarded, with no way to escape and no way to continue to reek havoc, and no control over the ruined facilities... they were just ghosts.

Not a fan of that theory myself. I feel like it takes away from the tragedy and horror of the Fallout world if people say "Humanity didn't destroy itself, aliens did." Cause at that point it might as well be mole-men, elves, or dragons from the Nth dimension that destroyed humanity for all the info we have on the aliens.

The thing is, even if aliens were the reason for the initial spark, mankind still did destroy itself. And would likely have done so anyway even without alien intervention. So it's not like it really matters if aliens caused the actual Great War since all the dominoes were already in place waiting to be knocked down.

@@MandalorianRevan But the most blame will go to the Aliens instead of the Humans (Humans will still be blamed but not as much) or the Individual who bombed it and ordered it, for example Any Dictators, Presidents, Generals or Scientists, so shifting the blame is not always good Storytelling imo.
@lamalama4206
@lamalama4206 Жыл бұрын
@MandalorianRevan that depends on how involved the aliens are in that theory. Is there some sort of specific incident in the lore people think the aliens caused? Otherwise , it could just as easily been "Oh no! Someone's managed to hack/otherwise activate the launch silos! We can't stop it!" Cause super-advanced alien tech might as well be magic for how it's used in stories to move the plot forward.
