The strange tale of the elusive Buzz Saw Dalek

The Battles in Time trading card range has a very interesting Dalek variant included in its 'Daleks vs Cybermen' set, which depicts a Dalek armed with a buzz saw instead of the standard plunger-shaped manipulator arm attachment. Was this simply a Dalek variant created for the trading cards, or was there actually a buzz saw Dalek in Series 1 of Doctor Who?

I think buzz saw Daleks might have been used for torturing prisoners but that’s all I can think of

And perhaps actual surgery for organic creatures when the daleks are researching something. The surgery could be for general research, augmenting, rearranging, experimenting. It's important to remember the Daleks came from a kaled scientist who specifically worked with biology. Davros.

I'd say that dalek is possibly some sort of surgical/ human processing dalek. Given that the daleks in that two parter were all created from humans the emperor probably needed a dalek with a more traditional cutting tool for cutting up the remains of their victims. A standard laser cutter would just burn the flesh.

@@plantainsame2049Considering there are mutant scoop daleks in the power of the daleks if I remember right, and that's a bit like a kitchen sieve, there are probably even more kitchen equipment type daleks out there.

@@JimmyBlether Yeah, and if the dalek drains get clogged up with the bits they don't want then a dalek with a standard plunger attachment can unblock the drain. It all comes full circle!

I wonder if the black dome and skirt Dalek was intended to be a Dalek Supreme? As you point out, it’s basically a Time War Dalek version of the Chase/Master Plan Supreme.

I reckon this is the case - the plungered one we see briefly onscreen is seen leading a legion of Daleks, so definitely some sort of commander.

Eaglemoss released this as rare Dalek 5 (exclusive to subscribers) in the Doctor Who Figurine Collection, and it’s named “Imperial Guard Dalek”. The magazine issue might hold some insight on it, but I forgot where I put it.

I think this is simply a case of concept versus budget. The script called for a door to be cut = buzz saw Dalek. But when they built the props, they only had three to work with. So it was more cost-effective to build the laser instead of an entire fourth prop, despite how cool it would have looked. I really appreciate the attention to detail though, like having a black Dalek leading the squadron or the Emperor's guards. It’s cool they put in that extra effort even with the low-resolution.

This is likely the exact reason why it wasn't used. Interesting fact (something I should cover in a full video at some point) - RTD originally wanted all the Daleks in Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways to be entirely CGI, with a brand new design that differentiated them from the bronze Dalek from 'Dalek', but this was later changed, likely due to budget or practicality reasons. A different company had to be used to make more bronze Dalek props than the one that had originally built the Metaltron prop, which is why there is a slight difference in the colour scheme - Metaltron has the gold band, BW/PotW Daleks do not

The onscreen version of this Dalek has a plunger - it's difficult to tell, but it's attachment looks identical to that of it's surrounding Daleks. Another note is that it does seem to be some sort of commander Dalek in the episode, as it's leading an army of Daleks. Given that, I imagine the buzzsaw Dalek was originally conceived as some sort of guard commander, only for that idea to be scrapped in favour of just having the four guards.

I like to think that the buzz saw Dalek was used in the Time War but once it was over they no longer needed them so they just got rid of them.

I object to the term "Buzz saw", this is an American term for "circular saw" and should not be used in a British property.

I didn't come up with the name, it's called that on the card even so, 'buzz saw Dalek' sounds way cooler than 'circular saw Dalek'

@@dalekbumps There are lots of alternatives that sound good. "Amputation Dalek", "Bio-pruning Dalek", "Dissection Dalek", "Laceration Dalek"

I do plan on covering the era of Dalek history spanning the end of the Imperial-Renegade Civil War to the start of the Time War, I'm not sure yet whether I should do it as one longform video or split it into different sub-topics

Funny thing is I thought up a dalek with a buzz saw when Dr Who came back in 2005, mainly cause I'd been playing ResidentEvil 4 alot which has enemies with chain saws. And ironically there sort of already was a dalek with a buzz saw the whole time

Id prefer to see the morphing manipulator arm work more like it was always meant to, like in Dalek when the Dalek Crushed that dudes head, or in the run up to the battle on canary warf when they extracted information out of the scientist.

Fun concept for how the buzzsaw might double as a *long range* weapon: The Dalek can shoot the blade from its manipulator arm and send it careening towards a chosen target like a spinning wheel of death. It can build up momentum to become superheated for getting through especially tough surfaces, and the Dalek can summon it back at will.

In parting of the ways the Dalek Emperor confirms that they used humans in the creation of their new Daleks, maybe the Buzz saw was part of the "process" the emperor does not go into much detail just ; "We waited here in the dark space, damaged but rebuilding. Centuries passed and we quietly infiltrated the systems of Earth, harvesting the waste of humanity: the prisoners, the refugees, the dispossessed; they all came to us. The bodies were filleted, pulped, sifted. The seed of the human race is perverted. Only one cell in a billion was fit to be nurtured." (Thank you IMDB for the full quote) Could be the buzz saw was used for anything from cutting out abnormalities / extracting cybernetics / non organic bits?

I think the Buzz Saw Dalek is a very senior Dalek, a combat veteran. It has obviously sustained battle damage; it is, in fact, an amputee, and the buzz saw replacement for the sucker is the Dalek equivalent of the human hand hook.

Buzz saw daleks would be more intimidating, especially if it was more of a chain saw like cutter.

Of the 4 Emperor Gaurd Daleks: 2 are fitted with the enlarged sensor arms 1 is fitted with a plunger 1 is fitted with the 2 spike claw Personally I feel that the buzz saw attachment is just that, an attachment, that can be fitted to any Dalek. As they where messing around with all sorts of attachments in this episode, I'd imagine it was just luck of the draw that this design got paired with this attachment. The black skirt and black dome design as seen in the episode being a leader for Dalek squadrons is the best way of looking at it I feel. Also fits well with the partially black skirt seen on a 3.75" figure (reminiscent of the saucer pilot Dalek in the classic series) being Daleks that get assigned to control the various Dalek vessels of all sizes. This structure of hierarchy (mixed with other variations of Dalek designs we see in Big Finish stories) really paints a massive picture of how a complete Dalek army would actually look when you bring them all together to make them fit into their appropriate roles (with a little bit of rule bending here and there).

I wish that the new who dvds had image galleries about these renders, because I didn't know about the buzz saw dalek until NOW. I also think the new who dvds need more bonus material in general.

Theory 2.5 the leader of the guard was equipped to torture and interrogate threats to the emperor? Like on the off-chance the Doctor had started acting against them without making himself known they may have taken alternate means to flush him out.

I would have loved to have actually seen any of these time war daleks after parting of the ways instead of just a random drone being the unranked leader
