What I liked about the story involving Torque is it never tries to tell you what to think of him. You get the equivalent of a page 4 newspaper article on what happened to his family, the opinions of some of the characters who also read that article and have to decide for yourself what kind of man (or monster) Torque really is. Kind of refreshing to be honest.

Theres also a journal entry from the molotov inmate who talks about seeing Torque transform into a monster in a dream he had. Then he says that he later sees torque when he's awake, and sees him fly into a fit of rage, tearing monsters apart with his bare hands. The implication I got was that Torque is just a Dr. Jekyll analogue without the actual physical transformation. That same inmate shows up again as a narator for the journals in the second game too.

The Suffering is a game I look back on with a lot of nostalgia, I never really played the game a lot myself growing up since I was super young and afraid but it was a game that my older cousin played in front of me. Twisted Metal Black, RE outbreak files, the newly released Dead Rising, Jak 2, ect It takes me back to the time of having my dad drive us to a place called Flick Video, choosing 3 games and having a great weekend. In my mind it was like watching a new dark drama every weekend and having my family to talk about the plot with like a brand new episode of your favorite show.
@nobodyinterestingyou2 жыл бұрын
What's great Is that the sequel takes your completed save file and change little things In the intro and In your backstory a bit to fit the ending that you had. Some things and characters are set In stone, of course, but It really did wonders for the story telling and immersion. It made the sequel more personal for both Torque and the player.

This was an awesome and criminally underappreciated franchise. The lore was superb, everything had a meaning and somewhat, in a way, you feel sorry for the monsters (at least that was my case). True, the story of Torque its not very well told in the first game but it is in the second one. But you can collect bits and pieces from his family "apparitions" The game is a true work of art that sadly it was eaten along many others by the big companies that make repetitive games because "it sells". And maybe it's a good thing that it won't get a remaster.

I also wanted to mention, in case I missed it and I'll have to fact check but Hermes/Horace and Lovejoy histories are also all intertwined. Its also worth noting the sequel quite literally starts off from where the first leaves off, answers some of the questions you had in the video and even picks up from your previous morality affecting even the opening of said sequel. And this is before Mass Effect used that to literally hype their pitch up to get made. Like I said, underrated gem so ahead of its time

I remember finding this game back in like 2009 on a demo site or some pc gaming site on my old windows xp computer. Probably one of the first horror games I played that really spooked me. The designs of the creatures were terrifying to me back then, and although they're a bit less frightening and I had no frame of reference to compare the game giving you a bountiful amount of ammo to, it was always a game that stood out to me, and I loved the grungy feel of the environment. I would always play 30 minutes here or there before I would get scared and quit haha. I managed to get through about half of the game that way, but I really have been meaning to give it a playthrough again. I've played a few horror and horror adjacent games, but I've never really jumped into the genre too far. Compared to horror and survival horror games today, this might not hold up, but I really have a nostalgia for it and it still is definitely something that I would put high up on a tier list.

It took a couple of years, and a large sum invested in a new ATI Radeon 256 Mb, before I could play it. I totally agree, you should go for the PS2 version, for the sole fact that it was the first to the party, and that's the version most people played back then. If you want to experience the same feeling that you might have had originally, go for PS2. Also, I absolutely loved the lore and the background that this game gave to it's monsters and the prison. Regarding the story, Souls games get praise for their method of story-telling yet The Suffering is criticized, I find that odd. A month ago I completed The Suffering on PS2 and to be honest, the game did not slow down as much as the frames in this video. The game slowed down quite noticeably, but still, in my opinion, the FPS did not reach the line of 10 frames. But the thing may be that I had a pirated version of the game on PS2 with Russian subtitles and voice acting. In addition, my PS2 is from a Slim revision, or rather it was from the latest version of consoles, it was bought in 2009 new, not used. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's not uncommon for different versions of the same console to have minor differences in performance.

Imagine going back in time to tell someone from the height of the PS2's dominance that someday most people wouldn't own a PS2. It's obvious in retrospect, but back then it'd be like telling them video games would stop existing.

I wasn’t using a small crt with a component connection. It was a RF connection.

I convinced my religious aunt to buy this game for me when it released and just told her it was a game about redemption. I wasn't wrong... Lol

Funny thing with that CO in the attic; it seems like what he chose to do there also gave him some amount of invisibility to the demonspawn running around. Seems like fear or something like it is what allows the demons to sniff people out and if you just chill then they're less likely to find you.

The Suffering is one of, if not the most underrated horror game ever! It had such an original story with creative enemies and addictive gameplay. It ends (depending on how you play) with a pretty satisfying, sad or brutal climax.... ....Then Ties that Bind came out....

Loved these games, still do. Something interesting, Torque after taking his shoes off after getting in to his cell never puts them back on, and goes through the 1st (and 2nd i think) barefoot.
