It's interesting how Retsuko's mother was right about the whole Shirota situation - she warned Retsuko she can't treat men like sushi on a conveyor belt when Retsuko nitpicked reasons not to see him again because she was scared of commitment, but then when she was feeling lonely she asked about him again and her mother told her he'd already moved on to another girl. It's like Retsuko doesn't think of her love interests as being people with differing goals and opinions to hers until it's too late, she just wants a boyfriend to fill a void in her life.

For example Retsuko doesn’t like her job, has had multiple opportunities to leave for better things but hasn’t, if she would find a job she genuinely likes she would probably feel like there’s less of a void.

the thesis of the show is that you'll find little things to be annoyed about no matter what path you choose in life. Shirota was a wealthy suitor who would have allowed Retsuko to quit and be a housewife, and that would come with its own minor annoyances that make her not want to get out of bed in the morning. She probably would have been happy with her arranged marriage (americans dont really understand that matchmaking its not marital slavery, literally just a form of dating that is upfront about marriage as an end goal) just like she's more or less content with her current path in life. The point of the character is that you have a right to complain about shit thats not fair, but also have to go back to work in the morning anyway.

I'd disagree with that. Retsuko also wanted kids, so its not like nothing would change unless he just wasn't there for his kids at all. Something that likely would happen anyway given his job. Also, marriage binds you to another person, including all your assets. It makes sense Tadano wouldn't want to marry anyone. All that aside, why should he have to compromise? Retsuko made the choice to end the relationship because no marriage and no kids was too much for her. Tadano made the same choice. He wasn't willing to budge on what he wanted his life to be, theres nothing wrong with that.

Once again, SHE could also have said, "not sure but maybe I'll change my mind". People love to dog on a man for sticking to his beliefs but defend a woman for hers.

When you both like one another but cannot see the same way, that will bound make one or another unhappy. Retsuko will always feel unfulfilled and Tadano would just not care about marriage and kids to the point of negligence. Sometimes, its nice to fall in love with someone regardless of differences. Sometimes, you'll have to admit that you need to break it off before it gets worse.

I don't think his friend necessarily told him to act "manly". I think Resasuke was very much acting like himself on his dates. The problem was that he was so zoned out and too much of a space cadet to realise when Retsuko was hurting. He offered no opinions when she asked him what he thought. His whole personality was just exaggeratedly blank and apathetic. If anything his friend helped him out, because he gave him the push he needed to 1) even realise Retsuko was interested in him and 2) told him to ask her out.

Resasuke was a good guy, he was just obviously neurodivergent and bad at picking up on Retsuko's nonverbal cues. I'm so sad that most of the fandom has either completely forgotten about him, or in the case of figureheads like Mother's Basement, recklessly accuse him of being an asshole. When Retsuko was more obviously in need at the party, he went out of his way to clean her up and make sure she got home safe! He definitely cared about her, just not in the VERY specific way that Retsuko was hoping for. I hope that as Retsuko matures as a person, she can reconnect with Resasuke bc I think they would be very good friends! Ik it's not gonna happen because this show likes to shoot itself in the foot by obsessing over the 'Will They/Won't They' with Haida (the least interesting bachelor imo), but one can dream 😔

Todano: Interesting and brilliant guy, albeit a little “flighty” (no pun intended). Good lay, but not a “long term” relationship sort of guy. Haida: Passionate, driven, skilled, but also weak in principle. Also a bit wet behind the ears. Seiya: He’s not real. Also a major money suck (by design), as he was meant to get ladies moist so that they send money to the puppet master company that created him. I love Haida and I hope he and Retsuko get together, but honestly he did come off as a selfish guy in the later seasons. But to be fair Retsuko's other boyfriends came off as very single-toned, so maybe they're setting us up to view Haida as a more "real" and flawed boyfriend? Idk.

I think we all know that the writers will leave Retsuko and Haida together, even if we agree or not. I'll be honest, I don't like that couple. Haida x Retsuko is really more than forced. I do not understand why people want her to correspond to forces. I know they will go by the message of persistence wins first, but for once I would like to see a character overcome that unrequited infatuation (because from experience I know that it is the healthiest thing, but fiction for the most part never portrays it that way) I would love to see Haida get over Retsuko and find someone else. As for Retsuko, the best partner she has ever had and I think is the most ideal for her is Tadano. Even after their breakup, their relationship and chemistry is incredible, something that does not exist with Haida. PS: I know it is an unreal dream but the hope that it will be Tadano and Retsuko in the end, is still in me.

Retsuko just might like being a single person. She's living in a world where females are expected to get married. She's not going to be happy as a married woman. She has issues that she needs help with.

I like Tadano best because he encouraged Retsuko to enjoy life and discover herself. I don’t see them ending up together but a relationship with him is honestly a wonderful experience. I think Retsuko turned Shirota down because she was forced by her mother to meet him. If she had met Shirota on her own I can definitely see a possible romantic relationship. He was a nice character. I would have enjoyed the show more if Shirota had more screen time. Haida is not great but he has the passion for Retsuko. His feelings towards Retsuko are deep and sentimental. Haida loves Retsuko with his soul and that kind of love is pretty irresistible. It’s too bad Haida is a coward and has very little drive.
