Also it's not just football for expensive Championship game tickets. I had tickets for the STL Cardinals in the 06 World Series by winning an online raffle to order the tickets by the team and the face value was $200. It was twice that price in 2011. On StubHub/EBay, good tickets were going for $3-4K in both of those WS.

i live in indy and when the super bowl was here there was so much shit to do it was amazing. theres not a single person i knew going to the game though and i live in the wealthiest suburb of indy. kinda was cool but also didnt feel much different than like a nfl themed state fair.

The thing about the neutral stadium is because you can't just put together your city, yes city because the Super Bowl is a humongous event, in 2 weeks after the conference championship games. I agree that the Super Bowl isn't about the game, but I don't think it's because of the neutral stadiums. It's because of the overhyped halftime shows and ridiculously stupid and overpriced commercials.

Yes I know the Super Bowl is being played in NY/NJ next year, but it's only b/c they got a new stadium and Goddell is chasing the Metropolitan money. Think of how many complaints were had in the Dallas Super Bowl recently when Dallas had a much colder week that they normally have in the winter.
@seangodde542912 жыл бұрын
One way this idea may differ from nfl (from what I can gather based on my limited knowledge of the sport) is that for the most part almost every team in the afl ladder is based somewhere along the east coast of Australia, meaning that they are in closer proximity to this venue for players and fans alike (add to the fact that aus being a smaller country means less distance for travel)...
@JohnnyS70912 жыл бұрын
Completly agree with you Colin. Neutral cities shouldn't get to host the Superbowl, it should go to the team with the better record. Also going to put this topic out there again, but you should do a conversation on the NHL lockout even though its over now.

Colin makes some good points, but it's down to logistics, you can't allocate tickets, hotel rooms, conference rooms, policing, establishing all the media locals etc within the two weeks from the conference finals to the super bowl. These things need to be planned months in advance.The best solution a national stadium -in the capital for instance- where it is held every year. Much like the FA Cup in English 'Soccer'.
@MSUHitman12 жыл бұрын
In case you guys get to pick the commercials, I assume that's not the banned Mercedes ad?
@TL870612 жыл бұрын
Good points except for one thing. If you let more teams into the playoffs, it lessens the importance of the regular season (a la the Patriot's 16-0 season), particularly for those middle of the pack teams. The top teams would have to worry about seeding for home field advantage but a lesser team would be more inclined to rest players earlier if there wasn't much of a difference between getting a 4 and a 6 seed.

I agree with Colin that there should be some actual home-field advantage for the team with the best record, but what is important to remember is that whatever city is hosting the Super Bowl always initiates infrastructure improvements usually two years in advance, as well as generally cleaning up the city (moving homeless further away from the stadium, improving the crime rates as best they can, things like that). So not having the 2 or 3 years to plan out the festivities really wouldn't work.
@neonhenry12 жыл бұрын
there is a special committee that starts planing the super bowl in the host city a full year ahead, the logistics are not as simple as you may think

Colin, you have to have the Super Bowl in a warm climate or you run the risk of having Super Bowl XVI in Detroit when it was covered in ice/snow, or in the AFC Championship Game of that season, which was one of the two coldest games on record and led to the Bengals beating the more talented Chargers.
@onlyadamsmith12 жыл бұрын

Maybe it's because I grew up watching soccer, where in some competitions the weaker team is granted home field advantage, but it doesn't feel like it's in the best interest of the game to go about it as you suggest. It would contribute to more lopsided and boring games. The soccer team I support once went to the German cup finals in Berlin (neutral site). That trip is the one game I most fondly remember of all the games I have watched so far, even though we didn't win the cup. Just saying... ;)
@seangodde542912 жыл бұрын
Finally, fans with season/member passes of their respective teams get a limited time preferential chance to grab tickets for the grand final, to allow them to support their team regardless of whether they live in Melbourne or not. I like your idea of having a specific venue for the Superbowl, but the idea of having a neutral spot as well is good too... a one sided venue doesn't help keep a vibrant spectatorship throughout the game, especially if the home team is being flogged throughout the game
@zibeddy12 жыл бұрын
every final should at a neutral venue. however there are cases like the champions league final last season where bayern lost to chelsea at home or world cups where the home team has the fans advantage.

Great conversation. The location of the Super Bowl has its issues but giving home field advantage to the team with the best record isn't logistically possible. For better or worse the final game of the season is more about corporations sponsoring the event than the fans. As a Wisconsinite, I know my beloved Packers will never host a SB because the population of GB is a measly 105k. Not enough hotel rooms. We need a Jerry Jones type billionaire to build a palace in Las Vegas. Problem solved.
@DouglasBailey12 жыл бұрын
The idea makes sense, but what the Superbowl has becomes means they are being planned for over a year. There are things going on outside of the actual superbowl that takes planning. If they had to wait 2 weeks before the superbowl date cities would not be able to prepare properly.

In football/soccer, season ticket holders get first dibs when the team is playing in a neutral stadium. That system seems to work very well in Europe, so I don't see why the same rules shouldn't apply for American football.

I'm only about 2 minutes in, but come on Colin, are you kidding me? The neutral field is what makes this thing awesome! If you give the better team home field advantage on top, it would absolutely defeat the purpose of a championship game! No sport decides its champion in a single game at one team's place. Also: Its the freakin' Super Bowl! I would go watch it if it was in my town even if the Chiefs played the Lions.
@KL4259612 жыл бұрын
Never said they should play as much games. Around 40 or 50 games in the regular season and a 3 or 5 game series would be fantastic. They'd make a lot more money too.
@mitsunari190812 жыл бұрын
That is honestly my biggest problem as well with the superbowl, I don't want a game in a random spot how many true fans can actually make it to the superbowl? It's a bunch of people who say they are truly fans but probably are just there for the experience and the halftime show, its too much spectacle and not just straight up football
@wolfking201012 жыл бұрын
If MLB can have World Series Games at each teams Ballparks then I believe the NFL can create a new system so that the Super Bowl can be played at the stadium of the Team with the best Record. If those two teams have the same record then a tiebreak process should include head to head record and if they haven't played then a coin toss to make it fair.

Problem solved...The NFL has an exclusive stadium built for just the super bowl.It would be named simply SUPER BOWL STADIUM and would be built directly in the exact pinpoint center of the country.Like how the Coloseum was home to the most epic gladiator battles.Fans could have a new element to the entire NFL and future players would have the honor of playing in their super bowl inside the exact SUPER BOWL STADIUM where their idols once played.The super bowl would mean so much more.

It wouldn't be fair if you played the super bowl at a teams home ground. You get rewarded for playing so well in the season by being able to play in the super bowl. That's your reward, your place in the super bowl. They should have a national stadium where all finals are played (this is the logical thing to do). If you don't like that then they need to change the process to get to the super bowl. (home and away fixtures etc.)

The superbowl isnt played in random cities the superbowl location is picked on cities with the newest stadiums to help subsidize some of the cost for building these billion dollar stadiums that way NFL owners dont have to look for help from the cities they are in to pay as much to build these stadiums.
