Callahan's time at Nebraska is considered a failure. But in actuality it was more like "meh." His 1st and 4th (final) season were losing seasons but in between he had two winning seasons and an appearance in the Big XII championship and the Cotton Bowl. But in order to meet the standards Tom Osborne set in Lincoln, you need to be a balanced team on both sides of the ball. You weren't gonna get that with the offense heavy Callahan. In his losing seasons there were two occasions his defense gave up 70+ points.

@cornfednebraskaneer
@cornfednebraskaneer 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrBmurray His biggest problem was that he was incredibly conceited, in '04 especially. The zone blocking scheme was tough for our big bulldozers to pick up on, but once they finally did, Cory Ross was able to hit cracks and find yardage. What does Callahan do? Throws the ball over and over. I know he wanted to bring in his style, but he was cutting off the nose to spite the face. The losses to Southern Miss and Iowa State in '04 were absolute coaching failures on both sides of the ball. If he would've kept Pelini as DC instead of Cosgrove, we would've been fine. Pederson destroyed our program by bringing in a disgraced NFL washout that never should have stepped foot in Lincoln.

I went to my first Oakland Raiders game as a child in 1977. Lifelong Raider. There's been A LOT of heartbreak being a fan: The move to LA. Losing Bo Jackson forever on one play. Firing Gruden then him destroying us in the Superbowl. Al Davis's horrid draft busts & free agents (Larry Brown, Javon Walker, D'Anglo Hall, Aaron Brooks, etc, etc, etc) Lane Kiffen & the parade of coaches. Jamarcus Russell. Darius Heyward-Bey? Derek Carr's 2016 injury right before the playoffs, Etc, etc, etc, etc, But that Tuck Rule bullshit STILL pisses me off. I'm still convinced the NFL wanted the "Patriots" to win after Sept 11th.

Dungy went on to build up the Colts' defense (who had already been built on the offensive side of the ball)... and that put them over the hump several years later enough to beat the Bears in a SB. They got hosed, but they got hosed by the rule, not by the ref. The ref correctly applied the rule, as it had been applied all season. (That was hardly the most consequential outcome of that game, as that's also the game Bledsoe got injured.)

Since the kick was referenced at the end, I wanna bring up an old Madden game, I think 2003. In that game, it let you play certain iconic scenarios in NFL history, and Vinatieri's kick was one of them. However, with the conditions provided, it was impossible to make the field goal (without gaining a few extra yards) even with a perfect kick. Don't know how they screwed that one up.

No Super Bowl in the entire history of the league or the NFL has destroyed two franchises for the long-term, the Buccs have not won a playoff game since this game, and the Raiders have had only 1 winning season since this massacre. The worst thing for the Raiders, this massacre started a long streak of double-digit loss seasons, 7 straight seasons of losing 11 or more games.

I dont agree with this theory solely because I do not think the raiders could come up with a strategy to slow down the Buccaneers. The game that post season against the Eagles shows how the Bucs could counter an offense (in my opinion) wildly better then the Raiders. Tampa 2 was a dominant defense that could shut down the best offenses in the league. I genuinely don't think the Raiders had what it took to take down a defense that heavy, thank you for coming to my TedTalk

The thing that sticks out in my mind about this situation is how did the buccs know the Raiders game plan two weeks before the Super Bowl if the Raiders didn't know it until two days before and the fact that the Raiders beat that same buccs team the year before by using a power run game lets me know Callahan threw the game on purpose
@rtdsbg1
@rtdsbg1 Жыл бұрын
There was only one week between the championship game and Super Bowl 37. The Bucs defensive plan all along was to defend against a pass heavy offense because that's what got the Raiders to the Super Bowl and Rich Gannon his MVP. The Raiders game plan was to run the ball because the bucs front 7 was fast but undersized, and some teams had found some success running the ball up the middle on them. Then Callahan probably figured passing the ball was their bread and butter, and he shouldn't change that in the Super Bowl. Gruden, being the architect of the Raiders offense, and having the number 1 defense, with the defensive player of the year in Derrick Brooks, means that the raiders were never going to win the game.

The main reason why the Raiders lost the game by such a large margin was that Callahan did not change the play calls when Gruden left. So, Gruden knew all of the Raider's plays and prepped his defense for the exact plays.

Raiders fan for 33 years. I remember that SB clearly, because I was in Kuwait awaiting invasion orders into Iraq. Did Callahan sabotage the team? Yes and no. I remember how the team performed that season, and saying, "Hell we don't miss Gruden...BECAUSE WE DIDN'T CHANGE A THING!" KTO even said as much during this broadcast: "Take over what Gruden had built." Translation: Callahan was using Gruden's playbook. Don't believe me? See if you can find the "mic'd up" moments of that Super Bowl..... you can actually hear the Tampa defense on the sidelines: "Man, we know everything they're gonna do!" Raiders didn't even change their snap counts, their audibles, etc. Now who would've thought the odds of actually meeting that playbook architect in football's biggest stage?

First off, condolences to Kobe Bryant's family. He was such an amazing athlete who had this confidence that he could hit any shot, and more times than not, he did. As for this conspiracy theory about the Raiders' coach giving plays away to the Bucs, it's possible, but remember too, that many of the plays Gruden had in the Raiders' playbook when he coached were still there. But, anything's possible.

I'd be willing to bet almost anything that Al Davis forced Callahan to change that gameplan. Al loved to throw the ball and probably couldn't see the logic in what Callahan was doing, especially since Rich Gannon was an MVP quarterback that season. But Callahan's original gameplan was the correct way to attack that defense. Warren Sapp can tell you what it's like to have the other team's offense pound the rock for 60 minutes. It's very hard for a smaller D-line to stand up to that for a whole game.
