Every aspect of this is GOLD. The monotone narration, the depth of research, the production quality, the puns... I hope the algorithm blesses others the way it blessed me with this MASTERPIECE.

Please imagine this in a less monotone voice than my usual dry delivery: Thank you very much! I had fun putting this together, even if KZbin isn't thrilled about the content (they immediately demonetized it and tells me it "may suppress the video," lol). I guess they don't like snow art? 🤣

I think you underestimate how much money is spent on art and cultur. In my country it is billions of euros not including forcing companies to buy art if they build a Building. Especially, in a time where there are not enough people in the work force this is a waste of people and money. This is considering that it has become far easier to make art nowerdays because people work far less and the technology makes art easier, more afforadable and more accessible. Furthermore, subjectively the best artist such as Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and many more all were poor and created great art. I am not saying that you cannot support artist with your own money such as I do on patreon but the government will never give the money in the correct amount to the correct people.
@edlundart13 күн бұрын
Yeah, I guess we just fundamentally disagree on this. First, you have to look at arts spending as a percentage of total spend. My opinion is that governments spend a lot of money on a lot of things, and some of those things have less positive impact than art, yet more money is spent on them. Second, why would you have as a goal that artists should be poor and suffer like Van Gogh did? Artists are workers, so the money is no more wasted on them than on other workers. Third, I believe that especially in smaller countries, you have to create conditions that can create a scene for the arts. Basically you want to facilitate what Brian Eno calls "scenius" - an environment where genius can emerge in a collective way. There is not really a "correct amount" or "correct people," rather there is immense benefit in supporting the arts broadly and then good things will rise from that. A lot of the benefits of arts and culture are amorphous and not so easy to measure by accountants, yet the benefit is there even for people who criticize arts and arts spending. That's my view, but it's okay that you don't share it - I appreciate your comment! And, I appreciate that you are someone who supports artists you like through Patreon, that's cool. I should say too that I grew up thinking about this more like you, because I was raised in a working class family who would see news clips of some artist getting a grant and would put on a performance where they danced in a ridiculous way while shouting a word like "ashtray" or whatever (I'm just making this up, but you get the idea) - and the feeling would be, why are us regular people suffering while these clowns do their dumb stuff and get paid for it? I can absolutely be sympathetic to this way of understanding the world, but I eventually came to understand it differently - that it's not a zero sum game, and that what gets on the news is not super representative of arts spending. The news is typically only interested in art when it is about money or something to be outraged about. The fate of the working class is not determined by how much a government spends on art. If anything, I would suggest that relatively higher arts spending usually is found in societies that are more successfully taking care of its people.

@@edlundart Thanks for your response! I will try to clear up my thinking a bit. Why do I think artist have to be poor: I do not think they have to be poor per se but I think it is a very good basis due to my opinion that artists have to be bound to the life of real people and the hardships that come with that. I would also disagree that most artists are real workers due to the fact that they do not produce things of economic value. If this were the case they would not need financial support. Additionally, I think the government is very bad at distributing the money correctly especially for things that cannot be tracked very well such as the production of art. Why are the everyday people that build the world we live in not considered artists such as woodworkers or bricklayers? These people create tangable items that help society and they often destroy their bodies for the greater good . These type of people live far worse lives than any artists even if they are poor and especially if they are supported by the government. The way we support artists comes from the past where kings/popes took the money of peasants that really needed it and created lavish art for themselves or to boast about their wealth. This can be seen in many things such as the gardens of versailles that were created to destroy wealth in order to show others that the king did not need these lands to work for him. This exat same thing is happening with the money that is payed to artists nowerdays and also built on the backs of the modern paesant. If you do not believe that look at how much money is spent on ballet or orchesters by the government. This again is a distruction of the modern peasants wealth without them benefiting because mostly the upper class consmes this type of art. Peasants will support the art that has real meaning even by sacrficing themselves through being a poor artist.

I love that we can have a respectful discussion about arts spending under a video about giant snow penises. Thank you for contributing to a better internet. I agree that artists generally need to live a life of, let's say "normal hardships," in order to produce work that is relatable. Luckily this is not a problem - the vast majority of artists make barely any money at all. It's not true that bricklayers and woodworkers live "far worse lives than any artists." The average bricklayer or woodworker and the average artist are all struggling. If I had to venture a guess, I'd place artists at the bottom of the group. And I'm OK with that - bricklayers and carpenters etc do hard work and the benefit of their work is obvious. It is true that the highest earning artist makes a ton more money than the highest earning bricklayer, but that's neither here nor there. In countries I'm familiar with, farmers are heavily subsidized by the government, certainly in Scandinavia and in the US. The amount of government funding going to farming is a gazillion times higher than money going to art - and that's fine, we need to eat. And I understand many farmers still struggle - they are subsidized to stay alive, not to thrive. Artists create significant economic value in multiple ways, but that's a long complicated argument that I probably don't have the patience or time or space for here - but I also think that not everything is about economic value. There are other values. Overall I suspect you and I could form a coalition government fairly easily. I too want higher wages for hardworking regular people. I just think it's unnecessary and unproductive to sacrifice art to get that done.
