The Sweeney set a Gold Standard for UK police shows which has never been matched, let alone surpassed. It was truly outstanding, fantastic leading actors, the chemistry and banter between Regan and Carter is brilliant. Garfield Morgan turned in a superb performance as DCI Haskins. Then factor in THAT CAR- the Consul GT 3.0 V6, it's as much a star of the series as Thaw and Waterman, I was a child when the series was first shown, I didn't see the early series, but I saw the 77-78 season when I was 7 years old. Regan and Carter were junior school yard hero's- with a shadow of a doubt, most lads were obsessed with the show. In 1985, I recall ITV repeated the entire series, I can recall watching it when I was 14-15. The Sweeney has a following to this day in the police. I know- I served for 16 years myself, and for the most part, detested it due to the weak style of policing. I recall the day the passing of John Thaw was announced, and there were some long faces in the factory I can tell you for a fact. I spoke to one colleague, and he was genuinely gutted- upset. He told me that Regan and Carter motivated him to aspire to join the police. I'll readily put my hand up to that myself. I suspect I would have fitted in nicely in the 70's and 80's- when the police were still robust and took no nonsense from scrotes. I saw the Consul at the NEC a few years ago and it's been restored to a superb standard. I couldn't resist leaning over the barrier and clasping the front passenger door handle- as used by The Guvnor himself. It was quite a moment. The only thing missing was a discarded pack of Benson & Hedges fags, and a couple of empty packets of, 'Golden Wonder,' crisps on the dashboard......... "O-KAY SWEENEEEEEEY! I'LL COUNT TA TEN JUST TA SAVE US ANY EMBARRASSMENT.......1..........2..........3............"
@TipTopMotors.Ай бұрын
Thank you. I enjoyed reading your recollections very much and agree with everything you say about the show from the actors, the chemistry and the Consul GT. The programme seemed very real and believable and they cared about doing their job. It was real good guys against the bad guys and more often than not the good guys won. This country has gone soft on many things and a lot of trust and confidence has been lost down to poor leadership of this country. The 70's may have had its issues but they were good times to grow up in and people were not so obsessed on looks and consumerism as todays society seems to be. Long live the 70's. One of the lines from Abduction seems appropriate. "I hate this bastard place, it's a bloody holiday camp for thieves and weirdoes, all the rubbish. You nail a villain and some ponced up pin stripe Hampstead barrister screws it all up like an old fag packet and pops off for a game of squash and a glass of Madeira. He's taking home 30 grand a year and we can just about afford 10 days in Eastbourne and a second hand car. Nah, it's all bloody wrong, my son." (Abduction) Brilliant writing which sums up much that is wrong today. Thanks for watching and taking the time to share.
@liverpoolscottish6430Ай бұрын
@@TipTopMotors. It's very ironic that you should quote the line from, 'Abduction.' I regularly referenced it whilst in the police, and regularly used the phrase, "It's all bloody wrong my son!" The police service is in a woeful state today, and much of it is due to poor/weak senior management. I worked with some coppers who had been involved in the Toxteth riots in 1981. One of them told me about a briefing they received from a senior officer who told the assembled staff, "I DON'T CARE ABOUT ARRESTS. I DON'T WANT ARRESTS. GO OUT AND GIVE THESE PEOPLE A BLOODY GOOD HIDING!" That was the mentality back then, and senior officers had a backbone. Now, most to them are seat polishers and purely concerned with playing politics to climb the greasy pole of promotion. Regan would regard them as, "FIFTH FLOOR BOTTLERS." I do know from a guy who transferred from the Met to Merseyside that the Flying Squad have occasional 'Kipper Tie Days,' staff are obliged to wear a 70's style kipper tie to honour The Sweeney. Quite right. Now I'm off for a couple of large ones at, 'The Crown' guvnor! :)
@TipTopMotors.Ай бұрын
@@liverpoolscottish6430 I've seen plenty of seat polishers in my time more so in the last few years, people wanting to climb the greasy pole and using the people below them to step on them to give them a lift up. Managers they are not. they seem to be a thing of the past and caring for staff and loyalty don't seem to exist anymore. One manager moves on another moves in and want to make there mark and you start the whole roundabout all over again until it repeats everyone jumping through the same hoops. We used to have managers who managed who knew their staff and made it their business to know them and they knew the job from the start. The idea anyone can manage you don't need to know the job doesn't wash with me, if you know it you understand it and the associated problems and potential solutions. Thank goodness i no longer have to endure all the crap having retired early.

So I just did a short research on Wikipedia and figured out it was only on air for two times. First in 1980 (when I was for sure too young to can remember and most probably my parents did show me rather things like Muppet Show, haha) but the ZDF did leave out a lot of episodes and called the series "Die Füchse" which means "The Foxes". Later in 1993 as "Deckname Sweeney" (Code Name Sweeney) on RTL2 which my parents didn't have back then. We got cable tv around 2 years later. And when seeing what's nowadays on air then you can only switch off the tv screen just within a minute. So I don't expect that it will get a revival soon.

The Saints Volvo another good example. BL missed a big opportunity I understand they would only supply vehicles for payment. How things could have been different. Its all about image. There may have been lots of things that were wrong in the 70's but that was the time it was and we shouldn't judge it now for what it was then. That doesn't make it right but you need to understand the times and recognise that things have changed and how far we have come since that and recognise the strides forward made.
