Another awesome electric scooter is here!
Funded with Kickstarter, Unagi managed to release the Model One a few weeks ago.
It is a lightweight scooter, with excellent build quality and good features.
In this review I will explore it and show its strengths and weaknesses and from time to time will compare it with Xiaomi's M365.
Let me know what you think of it! Which is your favorite color?

whats good fam? I have had my Unagi for 5 months. I have gone over 800 miles, and I really like my scooter. It is my main source of transportation. Very smooth navigation...sometimes i think to myself "this is what it feels like to ride an eel on the water". I will point out though that there are a few problems with the manufacturing. The scooter starts making funky noises when you ride it in the rain, and water somehow decreases the battery life. Maybe thats just the feel? Maybe its fighting harder to trudge through the slippery streets. So i recommend avoiding riding in water. My first Unagi got water damage, and started to make a ticking noise. but the team smoothly communicated with me and helped to send it back so that they could send me a new fresh one. Without me paying for shipping I add. Overrall i really like this scooter. I ride through the bike lanes of Denver and its really smooth. People always stop me and ask me if its my own personal scooter, and where to get it from. I always throw in how much more i like my scooter than the ones you can rent around the city. Thanks #Unagi #UnagiScooters 🙏😁

Desmond - thank you SO MUCH for sharing all that. There have been a number of criticizing comments from people that didn't even try the scooter, and I very much share the same opinion. Since I avoid riding in the rain, I can't quite say about battery life when rainy - bit will give it a try. Have a lot of fun riding! 😇👍

I have the Unagi and I live in San Francisco with many hills. I've rode my Unagi 400 miles in San Francisco since June. The scooter is great, it's the best design and quality scooter I've seen. Breaking works great. The battery needs to be more powerful...It can get up hills with full battery no problem...when the battery is dying it can't handle hills and you need to pedal with your foot. Going down hills it's great.

The scooter feels really great, speaking from personal experience, but one thing I didn't like was the break - it was pretty strong and it took me a while till I learnt to press it very gently and slowly, otherwise the scooter stops immediately and I almost fell the first time. Great review as usual ❤

Always good to see people sharing experience, thanks denitsa deneva 😇 For scooters there always is a learning curve, and even if you know them - could be dangerous. I got used to the Unagi controls so much, that yesterday I almost had an accident with the M365 - rang the bell instead of actually braking 🙃🙃

9:44 Weird statements, as Unagi support claims otherwise: _"the Unagi uses electronic brake E-ABS. We have a slight regenerative braking system if you are coasting along flat ground and use the electronic brake it will give you a bit extra battery life. If you go on any hills though the regenerative braking pretty much cancels itself out. Overvoltage isn't an issue with us."_ The last sentence refers to a question about a rare but severe issue reported by some users of the Ninebot ES2: the scooter completely switched off when trying to use the electromagnetic brake at full speed, due to an electric load sent to the full battery, and the scooter put itself in security - no brake anymore. Frightening!
@TechMishka
@TechMishka 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure this statement was not there at the time making the video; And I can show you how it seems to give a bar back once you are in still stand after you've been going downhills. As for the last thing - because I have had this with the Mi Scooter too - never felt it with Unagi. And I am absolutely sure about it because the first 2 kilometers after I go out are downhills 🙃 The only inconvenience with braking is if the battery is close to empty, because braking gets weaker too.

I don't think that consuming electricity for electromagnetic braking is an issue, on the contrary it is an advantage in my opinion. There are horror stories of people on well-known scooters with regenerative braking who cannot brake AT ALL in an emergency because they were driving too fast down the slope with a 100% charged battery (which is usually the case after each overnight charge at home). Then when braking - say because they are coming to a visible stop sign, but also maybe due to an unexpected car or truck crossing ahead - the electronic undergoes an electric load of incoming energy and since the battery is full, the scooter completely switches off, meaning no brakes at all anymore (all manufacturers tell this is a normal behavior!). Sometimes under such a surprise and lack of time is is impossible to reach and activate the foot brake in time… Imagine what happens then.

True that - the range can be a limiting factor. If a person uses it for daily commuting to work - then if it is 5-8 miles away - that's fine and one can ride at maximum power 🙃 But if we prioritize range - then the situation becomes different.

@TechMishka
@TechMishka 4 жыл бұрын
I think it is not, however best way to check is with Unagi support directly. Here's what I found on one of the comments on their crowdfunding campaign: "We are not UL2272 certified (yet). The main driver in the problems that UL2272 addresses is the use of low-cost electrical components to drive down landed cost on e-mobility devices. Our scooter uses high-quality parts top to bottom, from LG cells in the battery pack all the way out to the charger (which has overload protection). Feel free to email me (jeremy at unagi scooters dot com) if you want more detail or internal specifics."

If the weather was too cold, you are closer to the higher range of supported weight, and you've been aggressively riding with a lot of stop-go and dual-motor setting - then that's possible; I've had around 12-15 kilometers in my worst runs where speed is priority. Check the Ninebot Max. Twice heavier, but 60KM range is quite a thing.

The Unagi ES500 (dual motor) scooter is TERRIBLE compared to my Xiaomi. Forgetting the price difference of Xiaomi costing a fraction of the Unagi. The only plus on it is that it climbs hills much better than the Xiaomi. The minuses are (1) feels much heavier than Xiaomi, (2) very rough ride to the point of unbearable when going on NYC roads (Xiaomi doesn’t have suspension but its inflated tires absorb most small cracks in the road), (3) no cruise control (in a $1000 scooter?), (4) no drum brake? (I really like Xiaomi’s dual braking feature when it activates both electronic & drum brake when you press the drum brake). The “no cruise control” and the “real rough ride” is a deal breaker for me so I’m returning it after 1 day of commuting with it. I’m going to look at UScooter GT/TWOW - everyone keeps raving about it! I’m really looking for a Xiaomi that would fly up hills like the Unagi and be as light as possible.
@TechMishka
@TechMishka 2 жыл бұрын
I think you look at it from the practical side, and maybe - the value ratio. True - riding is far worse than on the Mi Scooter, however it is also something you can get used to. I prefer bumpier ride over flats. I also hate the lack of cruize control (regulations remove it in certain regions for the Mi Scooter too). But brakes... they are lovely!!! Wow :-) THe design and the weight - unbreatable. Strange you don't mention the range, because this is something else to criticize too. But I do agree - Mi Scooter is the better value choice.
@daa82
@daa82 2 жыл бұрын
@@TechMishka my commute is about 3-4 miles to the train station and back so range is something I could live with. But the range was terrible also. It quotes 15 miles and I got at most 7. While waiting for the return label it stranded me twice on the same commute as I do with the Xiaomi. The battery went from 2 bars to 0 in about 2 seconds and the scooter started beeping and then it stopped. The other thing I learned is that since it is dual motor it is really hard to push-scoot like a traditional scooter because of too much resistance due to the dual motors. I think the UScooter GT SE easily beats the weight and design of the Unagi - it is more utilitarian rather than luxury but who cares about a custom paint job on a scooter?
