Woolie loves fighting games, and the genre has never felt like people did enough research on it on the awards side. I did not play Under Night 2, but I know the hardcore FGC community loves it. I think the only other example from a different category that gave me the impression of "yeah, they just wanted to fill stuff in here without research" was the Knuckles show. If the nominators bothered enough to research Sonic stuff, you'd think they probably would have picked Shadow Dark Beginnings instead. It's a 15 minute animation, but it's a lot more compelling and better directed. (I only recently got into Sonic, mind you. I just thought content for this year was genuinely worth considering in terms of quality. So it gives the impression they just looked for what's popular).

I'm not sure the process does work how Pat thinks. it may have done in the past (and probably still inherits parts of the old process, like the big name main guy being the one representing each outlet). but I saw people who actually were involved with nominating (like SkillUp) talk about there being like 100 or so people sending in lists of nominees for each category. so I don't think it's everyone physically in a room having a discussion. I'm pretty sure it's a straightforward "everyone send a list, and whoever's name shows up the most goes on the final list"

Look at the way Kinda Funny do their game of the year. They have a panel, they each do a top 10 list, 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd etc. and then the scores are collated and ranked and you get the top 10. And maybe that means Elden Ring is number one because they all played it, but you get a little gem here and there from people who LOVED a little known game, made it their number 1, and it ends up number 8 on the list getting a huge exposure as ONE OF the games of the year.

I don't think it scales as well for a big show like this, but I also like the LFAB/Giant Bomb method. Everybody brings a list of games they want to rank, and then take turns eliminating games from the ranking. Makes the ranking unique and tell a story from the perspective of the reviewers

Everyone tries to convince me that the Game Awards doesn't matter. However, I DISLIKE that we treat it as meaningless due to how amateurish and inconsistent the nominations and rules are centered around it. The hosts and organisers are the ones to blame on that aspect. TGA should be an event celebrating the work and craft of thousands of people and bringing awareness to the people who made it in front of a large audience. It should be a wholesome time, with announcement and news coming second (or not at all and moved to a different event). Rather than be cynical about how TGA works, I admire the concept itself so much that I'd rather people make a push towards making it an event worth treating with respect so that we DON'T have to feel the need to call it pointless. Make categories more clear and diverse around different subjects/genres and don't make it a competition. Just celebrate the highs of the year.

if TGAs have 100 people putting in nomination lists, but only 5 of them actually know the Fighting game scene, then the other 95 are going to bury anything that isn't the obvious well-known popular games they've heard of. the problem is if they went out of their way to make sure like 30 to 50 of the nominators deeply know 1 category, then they won't know other categories (like when Woolie said he's not a game journalist and there's genres that are not in his wheelhouse). this is inevitable without TGAs handpicking a specialist panel to select for each category

@@PikaPenny17 the 100 are an assortment of people from well-known gaming review outlets and similar organizations. it's pretty straightforward to send a message to the magazines and KZbin game reviewers with the biggest followings (and a good reputation). there's no similar quick and easy way to just pick out the biggest names with expertise in specific genres (let alone more specific categories like music, voice acting, game direction, etc.). plus the fact you need to go out and ask each potential panelist "which games have you played this year?" adds even more admin to the workload. and that's ignoring your assertion that any person would have played ALL games in a category. you'll never find a panel of people who have played every single game with voice acting in it? or every single action game released in a whole year? anonymity would be possible, but then you'd just get complaints of "how do we know the judges are qualified? how can you prove they're experts?"

My only issue with SotEt counting is that unlike witcher 3 blood & wine I can't start a new save in the dlc as if it was a standalone game. If I want to play the dlc with a new character or even an existing character in many cases it's a massive time investment to even be able to get into the dlc, let alone be prepared tackle its content. If it acted like a stand alone game and not the equivalent of end game content update to a live service then I would say sure nominate it for goty.

If you start a new character you have to first get to Altus to start the Radahn festival and kill the NPC you can invade to jump to Mohg's palace. Which means you have to first collect both elevator keys or beat the magma wyrm. Then beat Radahn and Mohg. Which means spending time putting at least some sort of build together and gathering materials. Erd Tree seeds for your healing flasks. It's a whole rigamarole just to access the dlc, which expects a late game character, the faster and earlier you get there the more important the Scadu tree blessings become which means then having to run around collecting those or grinding levels.

The best way to watch The TGA Game Awards is via looking at Twitter/YT after it has "wrapped up". But yeah, this show never had any integrity and I am 100% with Pat on this one, if this show was worth watching and I was invested at all, DLC should be it's own category. Gene put it perfectly on twitter in that its ridiculous your GOTY candidate requires you to invest like 30+ hours into the base game, before you even get to it! It's more fair/realistic if the DLC is standalone. Erdtree however is very much not lol.

dude I think the problem is that it's always placed as a "here's the best thing in this category" but honestly I started seeing award shows as just recommendations. Like "Hey here's a list of games or movies or songs that we think are cool and you should play and/ or watch and/ or listen to". Thinking about it like an actual ranking that matters at all is just not a good mindset to be in. An example is Disco Elysium. Imma be honest, that game genuinely was not on my radar until the game awards nominated it for something. I thought "oh okay guess that's a cool game to check out" and turns out it was one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life and actually had a tangible effect on me. It's like the console wars man. Stop placing soo much emphasis on this shit. If the thing that you like didn't win that doesn't make it bad. It just means that some people thought that some other thing was cooler which is their opinion. Keep liking and enjoying the thing that you like but also maybe check out the thing that won cus maybe you'll find the next thing you'll love which would be awesome.

The big problem I have is we gave power to the illusion that Geoff created that this show is THE Game Awards. I'm going to be honest. Multiversus being up there is fucked. Not a lot of fighting games come out that people actually play thats a fact. Just put Granblue, Strive, SF, and Tekken and two indies like RoA. Multiversus has legitimately no one fucking playing it at all. Just put the games that are active. We all know there's always SF, Tekken, and two anime fighters being played and that's really it. Fighting games are not a dense genre like cod. They just aren't as popular and as easy to pick up. Pick the ones people actively play and just call their seasons their own games. DLC can already win game of the year anyway.

The fact that shadow of the erdtree is not stand alone dlc is the main reason why it should not be Goty. The fact you can't just start a playthrough on SOE but have to elden ring is another reason . At least with the xenoblade games their dlcs are all stand alone at least with 2

Its wild to me people complain only the popular games show up, and then when their popular game isnt up there suddenly its "all shit." Its just fun man, celebrate the industry and have a good time, it really doesnt have to be that serious. Now obviously in the fighting game category I understand that frustration, but overall I would say the award show represents that year of gaming fairly well to a general audience. For me I think this year actually has one of the best reads and line ups, outside of the obvious controversy of Elden Ring.

Awards honestly can only work if they are actually neutral, but that cannot happen if people very obviously skew the voting and nomination process and look at said nominees not as a neutral critic/expert. It's basically just a personal top 10 youtube list with massive budget at that point, hence why stuff like the Oscars or the TGAs basically have become none-enteties in the entertainment world. Only the stuff pandering specifically towards the judges win, and if those judges have completely different tastes then the general audience while not being able to stay neutral it diminishes whatever prestige a award might've had.

I'm completely fine with SotE receiving an "of the year" award but it shouldn't be "game of the year" cause it's not a separate game. You need to have base Elden Ring in order to play it. Legit set up a dlc of the year category there's been plenty of dlcs that released that could run with SotE.

It doesn't matter, and even if it did auto win this year it at least opened the door for DLCs in the future to actually TRY and be award worthy. Also here's a side thing, you are only somewhat right about something. I am a hater, i didn't like Elden Ring, i don't think it deserves half the hype it got for a lot of the things in it. But you wanna know something else? The vast majority of people who i have seen state that it doesn't deserve it's spot as "Game of the Year" are all people who loved it, or even just people who loved base Elden Ring.

I don't think the BAFTAs or Golden Joysticks are any better, to be honest, because it isn't like developers actively play everything that is out there. They are too busy for that. And when you separate out Western journalists and devs, there is always a bias against games that look a certain way.

I will say as weird as it sounds I don’t think Shadow is going to win, it’s almost guaranteed to be Wukong, cause generally Shadow feels like the given but people underestimate how rabid the fan base of wukong is, there’s a very big political aspect to it given that this is Chinas first big AAA game and they really plastered it all over media as much as possible along creating a following that sees Wukong as a cultural victory for China, secondly and of course lesser there’s also a slight socio political factor that Wukong has become the a weird pillar of the “anti-woke” group of gamers along with stellar blade, while this seems minor I feel like both aspects together have been underestimated widely by most people covering the possibility of who wins the award

This is well known to anyone that read the FAQ for the past whatever years, but what the public thinks is mostly irrelevant. The vote is 90/10 Jury(Mostly game reviewing outlets)/Public. Understanding this should make the strange category nominations make sense. Games that were played and liked by the jury demographic (reviewers) are expected to win. Some popular genres/titles get neglected. Wukong has an 82(86th percentile) Opencritic score with 87 critic reviews. Vs the reception of the highly covered games this year, it doesn't stand a chance. ~30M(?) Chinese gamers aren't realistically going sway Wukong odds at anything but the player's choice award, which is 100% fan voted, and accordingly, the only one people don't care about.

I can’t believe that they changed the rules at the last minute just so that they didn’t have to give game of the year to a JRPG or Platformer. Like if Erdtree wasn’t eligible, the two front runners would’ve probably been Metaphor and Astro Bot and that would’ve been a cool interesting race, but that’s unfortunately not what we’re getting.

@@Renoisticso, the game awards officially announced a dlc rule change that wasn’t a rule change? I’m not just assuming that the rules were changed. I’m basing it off of an announcement they made before nominees were revealed where they state that dlc would be allowed in all categories. Regardless, the primary point is that an expansion being nominated for game of the year leaves a weird taste in a lot of people’s mouths as it takes attention away from the actually new games that released in a year.

Is Balatro on consoles? If it's not I can't help but think it will be overlooked. Not so say that a PC exclusive can't win. But I am inclined to think that exclusivity creates a bit of a bias in the judges. What I'm trying to say is. I think exclusives have to be "extra" better than games available on everything. If that makes sense.
