@@megamike15they have a very, very compelling reason to stick around and not piss off the leader they elected to keep the whole sideshow of a party functional, that being the player character. You can use and abuse them as much as you deem warranted (or amusing ) and you can even kick them out, which is the only unrealistic bit since they really ought not to agree to that. I only regret the lack of a more intricate character reputation system that would have both positive and negative relationship with companions provide gameplay and narrative bonuses and maluses. Basically, a system from Obsidian's Tyranny.

Easily, Sera hating her own people, Solas passive aggressively looking down on everyone, Iron Bull and Varric being the only two willing to crack joke and not start arguments for no reason because everyone needs a mediator, Cole being an impressionable you boy with easily corruptible actions for that wild card energy. None of them really like each other for large chunks of the game and even at the end some are more friendly than others to each other. They’re here because you’re the Inquisitor and they want to save the world, even then if you push them too far they’re willing to leave rather than stick around in a group they can’t stand. That risk gives you a genuine desire to play peace keeper rather than the story forcing you to be nice to everyone. Like Pat said about Dragons Dogma 2 “it’s the friction that makes sparks”

I would rather have characters with flaws and conflicts. It's okay to have a character or two be the straight-laced good guy/girl, but if everyone acts like that then there's no variety. Characters are my main focus in storytelling. Building characters, origin stories, character growth, that's what I care about. If I don't have interesting characters, the story is meaningless to me.

@@Szriko That's the worst description of those two characters I've ever seen. Iron Man is a depressed, alcoholic arms dealer who feels immense guilt over the scale of destruction he's responsible for prior to becoming a "good guy" and taking responsibility. Spider-Man is a smart kid who lost his parents, is constantly on the verge of homelessness after school, and trapped in recurring life-ruining circumstances because he can't properly balance his work life, personal life, and hero-ing. Being Spider-Man is a miserable experience for Peter because of his grand tag line about Responsibility. You say "minority" to reference Miles probably, who is similarly bad at juggling his shit because he's a literally just a teenager. Being Spider-Man (Peter, or Miles) is to sacrifice your personal happiness to preserve others, that comes up again and again in those books. Both of these two are deeply, deeply flawed individuals who are just trying to do their best in spite of themselves.

But for NB, Trans,They/them characters for whatever reason can't have that which comes off mary-sue, like Pat's comment on the opportunity is "No we can't have that" "Why" We just can't" Meanwhile original mass effect and KOTOR you can absolutely be a racist asshole if you wanted too. Thing is.. i get it. Its a difficult position when it comes to writing. Take Disco Elysium, theres a BUNCH of racism in there, some directed at Kim. But we know that. We live in a world where racism, despite being prevalent unfortunately, is a laughable opinion to have. Its why anytime some idiot says "DEI", everyone knows what theyre saying, and so its easy to take humour in that and deal with horrible characters in something that is broadly disliked and openly mocked as racism. Same thing applies to Red Dead and the KKK showing up, Bioshock Infinite, ect Trans people are not. Trans people are actively having to push back every day. They still dont have rights, and even right now, have ghoulish congress members, trying to undermine their existence. The world is already cruel to trans people, having a character who is cruel in game, isnt gonna feel good to people who want that representation, and its gonna attract the wrong attention from the wrong people as "wow this character is based". So having a game where theres actually more hope, and a place where "No, theyre accepted, lets show how it is normal", is more important to people right now.

Gale isn't even as toxic as Pat makes him out to be. To get the "I'll kill myself" lines from Gale, 1 is him just joking and he doesn't actually mean it, the one where hes serious about killing himself requires you to stomp on his heart, and then eviscerate it right after he's poured his heart out to you while in an extremely vulnerable state of mind. The best comparison for Gale is probably Atton. Gale HATES himself, and feels immense suicidal levels of guilt for everything that happened through out his life (even for things that are literally not his fault), and uses jokes to mask how little he actually cares about himself. Gale's reason for being obsessed with his Ex is because his ex groomed his whole world into being her domain. Every time he casts magic, it's quite literally him pulling upon an extension of her. For a man who took psychology and can apply it very well on stuff he loves, the moment you're slightly annoyed it goes all out the window.

Came here to say something like that, yup. I'm completely fine with Pat tightrope-walking around the quality of writing and giving it a couple of excuses here and there (it's not that the writing is bad, it's that we're just kind of assholes!), but then he doesn't offer the same grace to Gale just because he doesn't like him. It was really jarring, even for Pat. Honestly - and it's not like I blame him for this - I think he's being softer on Veilguard because the last thing he wants to do is give anti-woke nutjobs any ammo. The problem is that Gale was brought up right after, and he has to hate Gale. Like, he has to hate Gale, guys.

One of my biggest gripes with Veilguard is the lack of true animosity between the companions and the inability for you to roleplay “meanness. In all previous games for Mass Effect (idk about Andromeda) and Dragon Age you could be an asshole, and in the Dragon Age series you could do things that would severely piss your companions off to the point that some of them could leave or rant at you about what an asshole you are. Veilguard is Dragon Age smashed into a Mass Effect skeleton but without the perk of having any genuine Renegade options. Rook is a 22 year old therapist/HR rep who can only speak to people in pure understanding and empathetic terms. But thank God they didn’t ruin Solas’s dialogue. He remains solid in the short amount of screen time he gets. I you’re giving me an RPG with companions, I do NOT want them all to get along and be all hunky-dory with each other. Davrin and Lucanis and their spats are next to nothing. These are the same devs that had Morrigan calling Alistair stupid at every opportunity and him wishing she’d crawl into a bush and die, Anders asking Fenris why he hasn’t killed himself yet and Fenris asking Anders the same, Solas quite formally calling Vivienne small-minded and ignorant for relying only on her Circle teachings as her framework for how magic and spirits work and Sera joking that every time Solas has sex he probably shouts ‘elvhen glory’ when he nuts in your PC. I NEEDED animosity. I needed friction and tension because no group of such dissimilar people with such different backgrounds are going to get along this swimmingly at first. This game was switched over from a live service MMO and you can clearly tell. Bioware tried to put spackle and plaster on it to make for a half-decent Dragon Age but to me it largely failed. I’m frustrated with EA for interfering with IP that had heaps of fans and storytelling potential, but EA or not the dialogue is inexcusably terrible and limp.

The BG3 companions are incredibly fun because they're a bunch of strangers who either don't trust or outright hate each other and are only allies of convenience... but if you guide them in the right direction they all become better people willing to fight and die for each other. Or you can make (most of) them even bigger jerks, if that's what you like. The ME2 companions are great because they're either (a) decent people who genuinely want to stop the Collectors or (b) morally grey mercenaries you help out to such a degree they're willing to go on a suicide mission to even the score. They may not all like each other but the mission comes first. I'm just not seeing this degree of tension between the Veilguard companions. The mages especially should be losing their crap with Lucanis, either because he's possessed which is a huge danger to everyone or because he's proof that non-mages can get possessed which totally upsets the whole "Templars keeping the Circles on a leash because of the risk of possession" dynamic. In fact, I think Veilguard really desperately needed a Templar companion to add friction to the team, someone who's wary of the renegade mages, wary of the two rogues and their magic powers, and perhaps at odds with the warriors for their blood-related plot points. I found Inquisition's combat awful but at least it was fun having Sera and Blackwall shit-talk Vivienne about her being all posh while I ran around the map.

You are incorrect. I found the game ends well, and doesn't really "kill off" any specific parts of DA. Solas, as a plot point, is resolved. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but as a long-time series enjoyer I found it great if you meet the game where it's at. It's not trying to be Origins, but there's still things going on. The Solas Memory side-plot was one of my favorite things.

Dragon Age Origins wanted to appeal to fans of things like Baldurs Gate and Kotor. Dragon Age 2 wanted to appeal to the action crowd but also carefully focused on the story. Dragon Age Inquisition tried to appeal to everybody, Fans of Origins' story, Fans of DA2's Character moments, Fans of DA2's combat, and the modern audience, while there were severe issues with this approach it was ultimately appreciated over the years. Veilguard feels like it exclusively cares about the modern audience I put 22 hours into that game and I see no appeal in it. Not only do characters often feel like they are directed completely differently it constantly contradicts old established lore. Arlathan used to be buried beneath the Earth, now it's just ruins in a forest filled with gold nobody has looted. The Blight first appeared due to Tevinter breaking into fade, now it's just a natural occurrence because the Elves gave the literal beings that make up the planet upon which they live cancer. In fact everything is now the Elves fault. The Elves Zombified the Titans. The Elves caused the Blight. The Elves invented the Darkspawn. The Elves ruined the fade. The Elves invented Blood Magic. The Elves nuked the world. The Elves try to nuke the world again. The Elves caused Red Lyrium and if that problem isn't solved the actual Titans may turn into Darkspawn. Everything is the Elves fault.

Im sorry but I can't relate at all with wanting to have party members actively hate each other besides in dragon age the only companion that HATED other characters was Fenris Morrigan didn't hate Alistair she just gave him shit and there banter was also really friendly Alistair says Morrigan is dumber then a 9 year old and Morrigan says he smells like a dog not exactly Laezel stabbing shadowheart either. So I can't really relate to this sentiment at all. Plus if people being nice to each other means hr is in the room I have some really big concerns

DAO has always been a pain in the butt to get working on console and PC and I hate the combat, but the story is fantastic. DAV plays well and has little to no technical performance flaws, but the story left me feeling hollow. From an “end results” perspective, I’d get more enjoyment out of DAO and would rather replay that than DAV. The artbook for DAV has further soured my interest in playing DAV again.

Pat neglects to mention that Gale's ex girlfriend is also the literal source of all magic in the universe and isn't exactly a corporeal person rather than an embodied concept Also that the reason he's "obssessed" with her is because she turned him into a nuclear bomb. You can straight up end the game a whole act early by throwing his corpse into moonrise.

The plot stops multiple times to explain what the concept of non-binary is and characters go out of their way to appease the non-binary character, only for said non-binary character to maliciously refuse to call another character by their prefered title. This is never brought up past the initial incident and no one receives any consequences for it. That should explain everything about the plot and its writers.

Maybe im not too far into the game yet, but the only time ive seen it is with Taash and its really not too overt. Like yeah there is a little bit of pandering but irs not as bad as some reviews made it out to be. Taash is supposed to be completely belligerent not because she doesnt feel like a woman, but because of the way their mother treats them. I think its pretty well written as far as pandering topics go. I do understand why people dont like it, but there are some very well written dialogue options, and Emmerich is a great character.

Pat, playing the game yourself to gain your own opinion was the best thing to do here. It's always the best thing to do with anything, but for anything controversial especially. My own take is that Veilguard is a 6-7/10 game. Not terrible, but not as good as i could have been, I'm on a second playthrough because I like the combat, but I don't have much else to praise. The queer rep I do not talk about because that's not my fight, but ignore anyone crying about wokeness.

I recently watched some Origins footage and it boggles me how much the design direction has changed. I get it's taking place in the country where mages run everything, but Veilguard looks like it takes place on another planet. Origins was so gritty and low-fantasy looking for most of it. Outside of the Fade stuff, the closest thing the older games got to Veilguard was Dragon Age 2's final boss where you're suddenly fighting living statues.

So there was a specific part in the SkillUp review where he just showed a bit of a conversation where your part is having disagreements. it's around 16 minutes in and even without him afterwards saying what i was thinking at the time just seeing those interactions turned me off to the game heavily. A lot of other things I just saw did too like combat and such hearing your party is just extra abilities essentially and apparently can't die? But it wasn't as bad as seeing these.... childlike character interactions like we're on fucking PBS and i'm watching an old children's cartoon again. That is why I don't have plans to get into Veilguard anytime soon if at all and while I'll probably watch a playthrough likely by Pat but maybe by others I don't see that changing my mind.

@@Bek359 The tone is not that light. Pat's still early. After the first extended section of the game you are primed to decide which of two cities are getting saved from devastation. Whoever you don't pick, the party member associated with that locale will abandon the cause for a time to help their people. Like a good 10 hours for me without Neve. And as a result she was a lot shittier to me, and vengeful. Since this affected her personality, she lost her ability to heal in combat in favor of greater damage potential. I think that's rad as hell. You can win her over if you make the effort, but she never changes back.

Honestly if they wanted to have one character in the crew that was an unproblematic nice gal/guy who was constantly reaffirming how hard your trying that would be one thing but having pretty much the whole cast talk like that is just as boring and stale as everyone in the group being a miserable edgelord. There's a reason BG3 has Wyll and Karach to balance out Laz'rel and Astarion. Diversity is good actually.

The description of the Lucanis possession brought to mind my recent experience with Rogue Trader cRPG and the closest analogue there, an illegal space wizard who is constantly on the verge of the door in their head opening too wide and deamons starting to pour out. It is hard to adequately describe the sheer amount of shit they are given on the regular by most of the rest of the party, up to and Including a meaningful side long glances from a chap affiliated with the Inquisition - and I heard it gets even more heated as the main story goes on. As a player, you can choose to try and shield said companion from most of the backlash and support them as much as possible, decide that intervening isn't worth it, defend them as a useful tool that is yet to outlive its purpose - or you can throw them under the bus, hop into the driver's seat and back over them for good measure.

Wrath of the Righteous, another game from the same studio and the one Pat has mentioned, is a very customaziable experience in terms of what kind of party banter you will be getting, among many other things. From a party full of genuinely good people, who, while still having their points of friction, will support and care for one another, sometimes in surprising and touching ways; to a party of toxic/cowardly/outright evil assholes tearing into each other and delivering ungodly burns on the regular; to a party full of naive dreamers and goofballs, with that game's Astarion trying hard to not be too amused by their silly shenanigans, because obviously he would much rather have a drunken orgy, but... 😂
