I'm glad that there's never really been an exact answer and that Carpenter has decided to let the audience have their own interpretation of the order the characters were assimilated. I lean towards Blair being infected afterwards as well, but sometimes I think "What if the Thing just wanted the group to isolate it, so that it could work in the shadows and behind the scenes". I know it's not likely because it would've risked getting killed but just something I've thought about.

@80Jay71 not necessarily, though I did think like you do. It makes sense for him to be separated so he can work on the saucer, but by isolating the camp he is more likely to take everyone over. Also, he is wearing different clothes in the radio room to what he was wearing in the lab. You'd presume he'd be getting to work on the sabotage, so why change?

I think the director gives us a clue to the ending when Mac says to the group something like “If I was the only human and you were all one of those things, you would all attack me right now, which means that some of you are still human.” If you apply that same logic to the end of the film where it’s just Mac and Childs alone, what are the logical conclusions…?

The keys and the blood is easily explained. When Windows was with Bennings in the storage room you hear them talking and Bennings tells Windows to "get the keys from Gary." Windows leaves and when he returns to see Bennings you hear something fall. This is Windows DROPPING THE KEYS. It was made purposely loud so people would hear it. This means 'The Thing' just had to take the keys from the floor, unlock the fridge, destroy the blood and go join the group. In fact if you watch the scene outside you'll see SOMEONE arriving a little later than the others.....Also, McCready is\was Army, as was Blair.

The fact that 40+ years later people are still debating who was infected when, and who (if either) was a thing at the end of the film, speaks to it's brilliance in creating distrust and isolation. ... Where most people miss the forest for the trees, is that it doesn't matter. It's the first G** Damn week of winter. When the rescue/investigative teams (from Norway and the US) finally arrive, they WILL find cellular remains of The Thing. ... Then the world has 72,000 hours left. ... It's the end of the world no matter who is or isn't a thing.

It is curious that the dog was alone with Clark for such a long time and still did not infect him. Blair didn't get infected until a Thing opened up his locked door from the outside. Blair was infected by the Dog thing that went through the lower ceiling into his room. You will notice Blair is missing from the Dog transformation. Now some claim it was when he put some of the thing cells in his mouth\lip area, from the back end of the pencil he had. .If Blair was infected by Palmer he would not need to build a ship he has the know how to fly a helicopter. The Dog thing creature, has the know how of the spaceship, but not the chopper. Blair was digging that hole when the snow machines still worked. Other wise we would see snow piles inside the shed each visit out there. It wasn't till he started making sure no one could leave but himself, that he took all the parts off the equipment, and then smashes them more. With his hole already dug during the first storm to hide his movements, everyone else thinks he locked himself in his room. (Blair in the shed) Fuchs saw Palmer go by his door, at this time Palmer had Mac's cloths in hand. To get away from Fuchs Palmer drops the clothing and waits. Palmer at this time has the flamethrower, as we see when he comes back in. It was Palmer that burnt Fuchs. The rumor to why burning him is that Fuchs was figuring out a way to kill it by injection. He had beakers of liquid. and in them working on a cure\vaccine. After burning Fuchs, Palmer plants Macs clothing in his furnace and leaves the light on. Palmer releases Blair, because Blair needs one more component. "he needs a power-source, the Generator." Child's story about seeing Blair is Bs, because we know Palmer released him a while ago. Blair was inside already, maybe got in from the broken window from Bennings . We see scuffle marks in the snow on the ground in a 2 second camera pan. We also see a new jacket is missing off the wall. We also see Child's stumbling after Blair's most likely infection attack. Just as Child's is outside Blair pulls the power. If Blair is inside pulling the power while Child's is outside, how did Child's see Blair outside? Child's did see Blair right when he attacked him, and that's all the creature will remember to say. Child's doesn't care to ask about the rest of the men to Mac. Fun Fact about the ending is Mac's shack is not destroyed, it's how he got that bottle and his blanket. One thing is certain he has to kill Child's, he can't allow him to be alone with him in his shack.

Helicopters don't have a lot of range. I'm in the minority who thinks that Blair didn't get infected until late. That "thing" we saw at the end, that's what built the ship and then tunneled up and infected Blair. He said he was hearing noises, and if he were building the ship, he wouldn't have begged to come inside.

@@wentshow Our heavy medical choppers can go 300 to 350 miles before refueling. Stripped down chopper loaded with fuel would go much further. Maintaining a certain speed with no change gives you slightly better millage. These choppers in the base were not designed for heavy transport. So i would assume their supplies are dropped by a large cargo plane. most snow cats can do 25pmh and depending on back fuel tank amount can travel long distances. The choppers in cold ares are piston-powered helicopters.. You can get 7-12miles per gallon. Most choppers hold 180 to 200 gallons. Piston choppers are around 200 for long distance. They burn between 17-24 gallons per hour. allowing near a 410+ miles per tank. So Blair got unlucky being converted by the Dog first. lol But gained super tech, due to the dog creature was converted by the Thing that took over the engineer and pilot of the ship. What i find weird is the only time we ever get evidence of 1 creature helping the other was Palmer releases Blair.

@@wentshow He said he hears strange things outside, and he would be right. He heard Palmer and maybe Fuchs when he screamed or yelled. Other then that, the floor board was removed from inside the room to get below, its why we see stairs even made. Blair's comment about It Ain't Fuchs is to distract Mac Ready. Blair knows Fuchs is dead already. To placate Mac, he said i here strange things outside. Earlier Blair want's to get people to distrust Clark, because he knows he's human. When i saw the movie the first time, this comment made me know he was the thing. Going back and looking at the camp map and knowing the Dog kennel is under Blair's room just re-enforced it.

This is a fun reaction. You're a natural. I hope you do more movies. This story started out in 1938 as a science fiction novella called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. Campbell was a very interesting guy who was primarily an editor of a sci-fi magazine, but would occasionally write a story himself. He's popularly considered to have given science fiction a boost in the world by imposing standards on it. It then materialized as a 1951 movie called "The Thing From Another World." In those days, they had little in the way of special effects, so had to drop the whole shape shifter angle. It was nonetheless a great movie and Carpenter loved it, so he decided to try to make a more faithful version of the story, which is this. This movie is sort of the pinnacle of practical effects.
@tommc3622

I own the Novella. Carpenter's film is actually very faithful to the 1938 source material. Campell's story still blows my mind. The concept of an alien organism that functions as it does at a cellular level, to replicate it's host... it feels like a fresh idea in 2024. This was 1938. 🤯🤯🤯

"I got my dog just outside the door... So I can feel at peace..." - yeah, not with THiS movie 😂 Also, a lot of people say Childs excuse is bs, but they had to use a rope to find thier way to Mac's shack and to the tool shed after the storm started, so it does make sense he got lost, then saw the explosion and found his way back. Also, they weren't sleeping for a couple of days or more, always were on edge, it does make sense he though he saw Blair and went to find his hallusination. And also, the things aren't infected people, those are imitations. The thing kills them, absorbs them, then creates an imitaion from the mass it digested.
@jessebatres6895
@jessebatres6895 7 ай бұрын
Lol! You got that right. I looked at both of them with a side eye right after the movie was over. And you're right about Childs, and that would fit his character because he's more reactionary and impulsive so he would probably go right after Blair or his hallucination of Blair because in his mind it would be like "There he is I HAVE TO neutralize the threat!". If only they would've had a petri dish handy to do the test again at the end, but I think they were both just done and thinking what's the point. Neither gets anything out of it at that point even if Childs is the Thing or not, they were both like "Meh we're done with this fight".

Not true. If that was the case, why did Bennings have vapor when he transformed? . The breath was a lighting issue only. That’s been explained repeatedly. There is no answer to any of the two being g a thing. ( there is a video game adaptation that says both are human, but not sure if it’s canon or not) . Most recently, Carpenter said he could not discuss the ending because there is still a possibility for a direct sequel.

I saw this as a theory and gravitated towards it at first, but I'm starting to think John Carpenter would probably try everything he can to make it impossible for us to find out of Childs was a Thing.
