I never got why some would claim the Crusades, resulting in a 2 century long presence in the Levant, would be considered a 'failure'... If we're going to call any eventual disappearance of an empire a 'failure' than we can pretty much classify everything as a failure.

I guess it's because those people think of the Crusades as failures is... Well, perhaps because the Crusader States were never going to last on their own. Those last three words are key, because the States were always dependent on the help of Western Europe, which people eventually got tired of doing. Personally I actually wish that the States lasted longer-- not for religious reasons, but because the idea of an enduring Outremer culture of fused Western and Middle Eastern ideas is fascinating to me.

I cant believe he brought up cortez... that in itself is insane.. he needs more study
