To me the ending of the movie made sense as a kid. I was way into the cryptozoology at the time, so I just assumed that when they said Cody would be coming back, that they were going off old folklore. Basically in some mermaid legends, if the mermaid lets their tail dry completely, they can take on a human form. But once their legs get wet again they change back into their true form. ....I was a huge nerd....still am

Fun fact!! In the case of 18:30 , inner tubes and water wings are an unsafe and unhelpful way to teach someone how to swim. It’s best to have someone qualified teach. Stay safe this summer and make sure your kids are wearing proper PFDs (personal flotation devices) that fit well. Water wings provide a false sense of security and can lead to disaster without careful watch. Anyhow have a great day -a lifeguard!

This is a good format. Really loose freeform observations, not hyper negative (I'm a fan of snarky comedy, but there's already plenty of that in the KZbin movie critic sphere). It meshes well with your editing style as well, and having a buddy to chat with about the video offers up more material and conversation than you'd get alone.

Perhaps this plot would have worked better if the mermaid leaving her baby on the boat was a later flashback rather than the opening. They build it up so much as being a twist, but the audience already knows so there's no reason to keep you invested. A twist can't work if it only applies to the characters instead of the audience.

I'm surprised how well your gay subplot joke theory holds up. This *is* a coming-of-age tale after all. His relationship to his apparent girlfriend was very unromantic. You could even read subtext into the movie: Cody experiences a 'different puberty' than his peers. And at the end Cody's secret is revealed and everyone comes to terms with Cody being different.

Who ever said that they couldn't? I mean, I don't think there was anything in the movie saying that even young merpeople couldn't breath underwater. There was no scene of Mr Main Character drowning. He was breathing underwater just fine when he was a baby.
@thecatheadroomincident7944
@thecatheadroomincident7944 7 жыл бұрын
He would have realized that he can breathe under water because he in the swim team. Hes been in the team since before he went through fish puberty. it just doesn't make sense how merbabies are first born human for no apparent reason besides for the plot of this movie.
@TheCinemaBizarro
@TheCinemaBizarro 7 жыл бұрын
Well, clearly mermaids can't breath underwater because they're mammals. They just have excellent lung capacity, like whales or dolphins. As to why they're born human, it's a lot like the cuckoo bird, where they leave children for unsuspecting couples to find and raise as their own. For years people have been blaming the reptilians on world disasters, while the merpeople wait patiently beneath the ocean waters...

Just a thing about fish gills: technically, yes, fish “breathe” water. They’re filtering water over their gills constantly to collect oxygen from the water. I would assume Cody would grow gills if he’s going to be living in the water for the rest of his life. Side note, the part where they’re in the tide pools and Rick is like “I’ve seen those on frogs and stuff” made me cringe because frogs and all other amphibians don’t have scales lol

Why? Why does a Merperson in this movie have to wait until they're 13 until they get their fins and tail? Do the parents just abandon them and leave them on land? It's not like the child can swim as efficiently as their parents since they'd have human legs in the beginning. Why can a Merperson stick to walls like Spider Man, light up light bulbs, and electrocute people with their lips? How would and could ANY of that be applied underwater? It's not like there are walls and light bulbs in the ocean, and the electrocuting kiss couldn't work because they'd have to get too close to either a threat or prey. This movie just makes no sense at all.

Maybe Merpeople have weirdly extreme survival adaptations, so that if they're on land puberty takes longer ad functions differently but in the sea it's faster and more proper.

LittleMisZorua Okay, I'm probably taking this stuff too seriously but... Maybe merman are a subspecies of humans and plant their children along them so they don't have to raise them themselves (like the Cuckoo bird). The stickiness is probably to grip onto stuff a lot easier, like prey. I would imagine that it's be pretty tough trying to hold onto a fish underwater. The electricity might work like those weird eels, like the other commenter said. So to kill prey, they probably hold onto fish with their weird sticky hands then fry it's brains out. I forgot when, but it's mentioned that this boy can control fish so I guess that is also a merman ability

Between this and that one Barbie movie, A Mermaid Tale? mermaid moms have really got to start giving better instructions for the humans to give to their kids. "Oh here's a baby, he'll become like me when he's a teenager because mermaid puberty I guess but hey, lets not inform or warn your child so he thinks he's a human just to fuck with him. And don't you DARE raise him to know mermaids are real." Edit: holy shit they literally stole the baby? I always thought what Ian did, that she put the baby there for the people. Lmao why the fuck would you put your kid in an occupied boat and why would you just take home a fucking baby and not take it to the police or something???
