This is solid advice. For me the three are: 1. Buy what you like (ignore the hype watches - not saying they're bad, they just might not be you) 2. Buy what you will wear (no point in buying a watch to sit in your box - that's money you could've spent on something you'd actually wear) 3. Never settle for an alternative (it'll never scratch that itch) Bonus: Make sure you want it. Don't buy on an impulse.

I will add a fourth rule. Treat watches, as any luxury items, as services, not assets. Meaning an expense you will not recoup later down the line.

agree - I personally imagine that when I've bought a watch the money is gone, set on fire never to return - so freeing.

1. Always buy the watch with the bracelet; it's pricier to add it later. 2. Haggle for a discount. If that fails, push for a free strap. 3. Don't sell your watches. When you tire of them, force them on family members and expect them to wear them with passion.

I like looking at an original source Pete, good work. I might add that it’s ok as your horological journey progresses to change what interests you. So maybe you might change from dress watches to divers or Swiss to German to Japanese…. Be careful about flipping though. You might find that you make more regrets that way without careful thought

I think the Oracle also said "buy Rolex..."

dunno - a 2550 year wait for an ROI seems a bit excessive.
