THE THREE LOCHS WAY | Wild Camping Scotland | Wild Camp UK
Three Lochs Way wild camping.. in November? Sounded like the perfect winter hiking trail to us!
We had been on the hunt for a relatively short long distance hiking trail, that would be suitable for the colder months.
The Three Lochs Way is a 33 mile hiking trail that starts in Balloch and ends in Inveruglas, it traverses across The Trossachs National Park and takes in the three Lochs .. Loch Lomond, Gare Loch and Loch along. It is also known as The Three Lochs Walk, and they also run a Three Lochs Ultra.
How long does it take to walk the Three Lochs Way? Well, it really depends on the time of year and what time of day you start the trail.
It ended up taking us 3.5 Days to do just 33 miles!! This was for a few reasons, you will find out in the video! But mostly as the sun was setting at 4.15pm so we were running out of daylight hours.
The trail itself is simply gorgeous with some very pretty scenery, it is very well sign posted and for the most part, follows excellent paths
This makes it a great trail to tackle in the winter months. It has resupply options and is full of water sources.
Yes it was cold when we camped the second night, but as long as you have the right equipment for the temperatures you should be ok! Obviously check the weather reports before you start off. Wild camping Scotland is such an amazing experience, we highly recommend it.

It's a really enjoyable route. The climb out of Balloch is never ending on the Stonymollin Road, but there are fantastic views over Loch Lomond once you get up near the top. The route there was a coffin road from Balloch across to Cardross - I really feel for the folk that had to be coffin bearers over it! I actually did a lot of conservation work up there in the mid 90's as a volunteer (wow, not far off 30 years ago now) on the path. We actually rebuilt the stone ford on the path not far after the end of the tarmac road - I hope it's still doing its job. This was all long before the routes became the John Muir Way and Three Lochs Way, but I suspect it was all part of the ground work to get help establish these routes. The scenery towards the end is just fabulous. Also, during the summer, it's really worth trying to time it to catch the water bus from Inveruglas and have a bit of a cruise on the Loch. You can either return to Tarbert (for the train), or even return to Balloch - though I think that's a little more complicated!

Wow, what an epic trail and such a lovely time of year to do it, “cold, rainy and fabulous” ❤Ah Loch Lomond one of our old easily accessible haunts when we lived in the North West! I do know the music but just cant quite place it! Saw the whole of the moon? Dont know the name! 😂thats a great addiction to have! that rain on day two was pretty unforgiving. Wow those army huts are a real blessing. Gosh you must have got really wet, what a nightmare! Glad the rain held off on day three, look at those awesome views! Gosh that rain has made the paths difficult to negotiate! Glad you have a well deserved hotel for your third night. What a stunning location! Just can’t beat Scotland for those atmospheric views! Oh was that Lomond Shores at the start? If so it brings back great memories of the Highlands from last year when we had 4 nights up there. Looked a good trail to follow and seating in November - in Scotland😳. Now that was an obstacle on the trail and more to come too and you were sure right about the rain. Got to say far too much tent time for me, I would be going nutso before midnight but a bonus being a well marked and (obstacles apart) real easy trail to follow. This wooden huts must have been a lifesaver mind - well done the army! Loved the girly running 🤣 but I hope your foot is okay and real good that you eventually did get some sun and superb Highland views. That hotel looked nice and another bonus on the trail, especially with wet gear but that swamp and fallen trees did not help things. Next year I have set a goal to walk the Northumberland Coast Path, which follows the gorgeous Northumberland coastline for 62 Miles, from Cresswell in the south to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north. Unsure if I am going to section hike it or book a couple of Hotels/B&Bs along the way but it is a defo. Cheers Alan

Very enjoyable video in really wet conditions. A pity that all your gear was soaked but lucky to find those shelters. I was unaware of the existence of The Three Lochs Way and it would make for a good weekend hike, not far from Glasgow by train. Are there occasions when the route is closed due to military exercises taking place? 'Inbhir', or 'Inver' more accurately is a river mouth; where the river meets a body of water such as the sea or a loch (not lock).

Really enjoyed that. It's a route I know very well as I live in Arrochar. By the way - it's the second wettest area in the UK😅. By way of a suggestion for a future hike, have a look at Affric Kintail Way. First half is steady enough, the second half is spectacular. Hi Yasmin, yes it did actually go on for a fair few miles, but the army huts are left open a lot so your best bet is to pop into there, alternatively I would contact the base and double check where is best to camp and if they are using it to practice on the dates you are doing the trail

Yep looks like Scotland to me, I've just subscribed because you look like you have a lot of fun on your hikes and that is a great way to enjoy the outdoors 👍👍, but on a serious note your kit care needs attention, wet sleeping kit is a big no no, get some proper dry bags, I line my rucksack with a large drybag and pack everything else in smaller drybags, the lightweight ones are brilliant for backpacking but I still put my sleeping kit in a canoe drybag, no lecture just advice from an old guy who learned the hard way, Christmas is coming, treat yourselves to a bit of kit therapy and you will have happier times, have a great Christmas and see you in the New year 👍👍

@@DrunkOnWanderlust yes I've done the bin liner thing and in really bad weather it still got in, the light weight ones are great for backpacking and one that fits your full sack means you don't have to worry about a rain cover, just remember that you have to be able to wrap the top of the bag over at least three times so go for bigger than you need.
