I live close to Carole Baskin's 'sanctuary' and remember watching this show having never heard these tales before. The 'Carole killed her husband' story wasn't a rumor started by Joe Exotic and this man in the interview seems to gloss over the fact that her deceased husband's family were the ones singing from the rooftops that he was planning to divorce her and he'd told them then he subsequently went missing. Due to public outcry and renewed interest, even our sheriff committed to putting fresh eyes on the case. It even started that tiktok rap thingy (you can still find those videos online if you Google Carole Baskin rap videos/rap song). It's weird he's saying 'unfounded'.

I know both Joe and Carol. He's as wacky as they come. She's not much better. She has her own cult following. One of her followers lost an arm to a tiger.She was after Joe for years to close him down. You are right about some of those storytellers being paid, some of them were literally given a script. Joe had many, many relationships. He's always been a troubled person.

Joe visited the elementary school in Pauls Valley Oklahoma back in the late 90s. The kids could get their photo taken with a tiger cub, and many did. It was basically their spring pictures that year. My stepdaughter was a 3rd grader and got her pic with the cub. She looked nervous. The elementary schools used to take field trips to the animal park. They quit because, although he was never actually normal, he definitely got stranger and more unpredictable over the years. I assume it was due to drug abuse. When jobs were advertised there, it did seem cult like because you had to live in a trailer on the premises, and a LOT of stipulations for extremely low pay. Only a desperate person would do it.
@lsmmoore1
@lsmmoore1 Жыл бұрын
It's not just desperate people who get roped in by these sorts of demands. These sorts of things also happen in "glamour" fields. Like fashion magazines, or baseball, or things like that (my mom was a graphic designer and had a few choice words for the ways in which some of the baseball guys tried to underpay her because the glamour of the field would get a lot of younger folks willing to accept exploitative wages and my mom got them to pay her fairly because she was old enough to know better). Animal lovers can similarly be lured by these types of demands, especially if they're fresh out of high school and don't know what legitimate animal fields are like (zookeeper is sort of like that from what I hear though not to that extent, but animal science does not have that level of demand, certainly not outside of PhD coursework, usually those things allow for a life outside of it, and the more intensive stuff tends to pay a proper wage).

If it’s possible to talk to someone who knows that story, that would be a fascinating episode. It was crazy how everyone saw this crazy, evil, animal abuser as a hero and then made Carol Baskin the villain. Sure she is probably pretty crazy too but I felt so incredibly bad for her for all the hate she was getting because she was just trying to rescue all the cats people like Joe created and to stop his horrofic animal abuse. Made me sick how no one seemed to care about all the beautiful cats who where used and suffering. Or the addicts he was using. Just because he was a fun character.

Interesting interview, Andrew. Just some points I want to mention. Complete disclosure here, I am a long time supporter and donor to Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. This is the sanctuary run by Carole Baskin. Although mistakes were made in the early years with the breeding of small exotic cats, such as bobcats, once Carole learned that this would not help conservation and that it was cruel for people to own or touch wild cats, this stopped. BCR is now an accredited sanctuary which rescues abused, abandoned exotic cats. There was never any cross breeding between species as there was in the GW zoo. BCR, along with other legitimate sanctuaries, fought for over 20 years to get the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed in the U.S. This was signed into law in 2022. It is now illegal to own, breed, or allow public contact with tigers, lions, etc. Any present owners may keep their pets, but they must register them with the Fish and Wildlife agency. Carole may be a little eccentric, but her love and concern for these cats and her strength in fighting for the cats despite death threats from these animal abusers shows a tremendous strength of character. Thank you for interviewing Sean, he seems more balanced than those that did "Tiger King", but I just wanted to add my input. BCR is very transparent in both their mistakes, their finances, and what they do. If looking for more info, their website is bigcatrescue.org. P.S. She does not ride around the sanctuary in a tiger suit- she does like animal print designs, however.

The two of you are a good laugh together. I watched Louis theroux on this animal years ago and I felt sick to the stomach then. Why these wierdos are actually allowed to get away with it for so long beats me.

As much as Stephanie Jarvis gets away with her so called charity donations to Villioti institute. When the poor student dies . She did not have enough money for food and travel yet SJ was given thousands of pounds of dresses. Think about it.

@@barbaragrace1992 what a heartless comment. The girl died. She was monetized on many of SJ blogs for her own gain. She gave nothing but our money. It was viewers who donated. Why did Villioto allow this student to be exploited? I do know that in other universities benefactors for an individual would take an interest in the students welfare. The money here was for education only. Villiotto benefitted. Even from the outset the student made it clear she was going to struggle she was even given a meat voucher! I do contribute as I watch!

Making love to an animal is far frm the right combination of words to use; I'd go with grotesque sexual abuse of an animal! The thought of what happened to all those animals makes me absolutely sick to my stomach! Those types of zoo's should be banned & outlawed!

I watched the Netflix series. Thought all of the people involved with the big cat sanctuaries were very dodgy folk. Joe was definitely a narcissist controlling his staff, his personal relationships and absolutely disgusting with those poor animals. I had come across Carol Baskin before the series, I think it was her KZbin channel a few years back. They are all as bad as each other.
