The arthropods back then got their stats handed to them, whereas our ancestors had to grind really hard to level our intelligence stat up. We didn't have to rely on any overworld events to thrive. In fact, according to tierzoo's video on how humans broke the game, the ice age balance patch actually hit the sapiens faction in the African server pretty hard.

Well if you did it now... since humans exist, it would certainly mean lots of terrifying insects, but it would also be great news for humans and other large mammals. More oxygen is a superbuff for every species in a higher weight class, it's just that arthropods benefitted more in that meta.

Im actually gonna have to correct you on this update. This wasn't a glitch, but rather an oversight by the devs. When the devs introduced a new material for plants, called lignin, they introduced trees into the ecosystem for all the new players to chow on. But they made an oversight in that bacteria and fungi players could not digest the lignin in the trees, which would normally take in the oxygen in the atmosphere and spit out co2. So the oxygen built up, giving arthropod players a big advantage. It didn't take too long for the deva to realize their mistake and patch in the ability to digest lignin, balancing everything out

@@iker9095 They were probably pretty tired after the lengths they had to go to to break up the Devonian meta. Dunkleosteus survived the first extinction patch, forcing them to do another. It might not be as much of a threat now, but Dunkleosteus was very strong at the time. It and some of the other fish like Hyneria were so strong that the non-giant predatory fish players were begging the devs to let more guilds access the land servers.

They were barely introduced and had to face very dangerous opponents, specially the first flying build(if it wasn't the first, then it was the first strong flying build). That may also explain why did the devs make them the most dominant species of the server for the longest time after that, they probably wanted to compensate them, but got too far again and had to drop the great extinction event again. Actually, it was the devs to the partner game flora, to this game, named fauna, that made that change. They added the ability for some players to resist destruction of their stems, allowing trees to grow, which caused the massive plant count spike, and consequently the massive oxygen spike.

The plant/fungus metagame is much deeper than usually given credit for. But the carboniferous era was when a lot of those vascular and mycellium builds were being tested out- the explosion in popularity of the animal factions was largely a response to that, as an even more fast-paced version of the heterotrophic build. So much so, that it really shifted the more active gameplay into the animal builds. They may just seem like background now, but every time the autotrophic factions get updated or unlock new adaptations, it literally shifts the entire game balance. Early tree builds were absolutely insane before they got nerfed by herbivore updates. But they started to exploit those right way with the seed&flower expansions, and are still some of the most iconic zone mapping players. Plant faction is 100% long game stats

To give the devs a little credit the vegetation glitch was probably related to the introduction of the "wood" trait, which massively increased the HP and DEF of the higher-level land plants. And it was also was bugged so that the DEF buff didn't end when the plant died, so no-one could gain xp from the dead vegetation. This was never really patched, instead they just introduced the lignicolous fungi build with the Permian patch.

If you dig in the code a bit you find hints that the devs may have been intending to make the plants playable thus giving competition to both vertibrate and vertibrate animals. Some plants today still have abilities that suggest this such as carnivorous plants however plants were never given a movement ability on the official server and are only playable on one or two modded servers. The devs must have made this update to see if the meta would hold up when players were alowed to spawn as plants and ultimately they chose never to do it.

@@lokiaston9770 you can actually play as plants, but just like many abundant animals the majority of them are NPCs because there aren't enough players to be them. You must do certain things to unlock the ability to play as a plant, not sure what they are though because very little information is available. I do know that it only works in PC version unfortunately. From what I know plant gameplay is basically like that of a sponge where you afk and the plants have different stats from animals.
