Matt, you are a few days late. Our season opened on the 23rd. I could have used this advice then. Everything was just as you said and, for a change, I did it right. I was set up in a pasture. It was windy (hard to hear the gobblers, but they were around). I called from time to time with my new Ol' Sly slate. About 6:45 P.M., my bird came walking up with no sounds at all. At 21 yards, Mr. Mossberg and I invited him to dinner and he accepted.

Dale, I tried your "answer back" calling technique to get in their heads. It worked like a charm. They traveled over 250 yards, and I barely had enough time to put my mask, gloves, and cap on. I was able to shoot a nice 17lb Jake the 2nd day of the season. I haven't shot a bird in over ten years due to being disabled. I thought I would try this year and the Lord had everything lined up for me to be successful with my limited abilities. It was nice to hear the big gun roar one more time. I hope I have another opportunity in the future. I really like the Mossy Oak cap, thanks.

Hey Dale, I just want to give you credit for a nice gobbler I shot at 12:30am in Missouri. It was a bust in the morning and then I watched matt dales golden hours hunting video. I got off the couch and went back out. After 45 minutes of calling this gobbler snuck in silently and luckily I was awake. Thanks man!

This advice is spot on. I've never done much evening hunting but last Saturday I did just what you're saying and the boss bird of the farm we hunt slipped in and i harvested the biggest bird of my life.

80% of my turkeys killed are at 12-4 , when the hens slip off , the gobblers will literally run to you if they are alone in these situations

Your advice totally applies out West here in states that allow evening hunting, such as Idaho and Oregon. My observation is that Merriam and Rio gobblers will often head to a strutting area, such as an open high bank, a pasture, or some type of clearing, to strut and gobble to gather up hens before flying up to roost. I had my first stop successful evening hunt Sunday evening. I had previously identified a strutting area and set up there about an hour before fly up. I made some yelps with my box and mouth calls and had a gobbler work his way up with some convincing gobbles and spittin’ and drummin’… I got a little carried away with myself and dropped the hammer on him at 12 yards based on his behavior and head color. He turned out to be the biggest jake that I had harvested, still a perfectly legal bird and a breed/subspecies type of Merriam. Came in like he totally meant business, and alone, unlike a pack of his comrades in the area…

The 24th me and my ma went hunting that morning didn't even get set up yet then we got a turkey gobbling about 60 yards. I called him in with my ol sly slate call, got him in 20 yards and my ma got her first turkey. 2 beards.

Hey Matt. I need help again. I have birds that hand in fields. Very light cover at power line poles. The birds won't leave the field or get closer than 80yrds. Wondering if they will notice if I get in a blind in the open field for the next hunt.???? Thanx again

Just got back from Wood, South Dakota last week. Tagged out in three days of tough hunting. Weather was beautiful and 82 degress for most of the first day then a cold front rolled in fast! Got caught in a thunder storm and Damn near struck by lightning! The next two days it was in the 30's with winds steady at 30mph gusting to 50mph with rain turning to snow. Killed my first bird 2 hrs after spotting him, (yes he had hens) at 8pm on the second evening in those conditions. Me and my buddy tagged out with doubles at 7:30 am in the snow and 40 mph winds on the third morning. Never give up! It was great hunting memories!

What’s the best way to hunt a pressured turkey that’s even been shot at before and missed?
@wdtaut5650
@wdtaut5650 2 жыл бұрын
Matt has had some videos on this. In my experience, it mostly depends on how long ago anything happened and what was going on. Single incidents don't seem to bother them much. If the pressure is pretty constant, they'll leave. A couple of years ago, I missed one and two days later he came right back. Didn't miss the second time. I was the only one hunting that area so not much pressure. Last year, not so good. There was other people in the area being kind of loud and after a few days of it, the birds left.

It's been a tuff year in Alabama, well at least it has been for me. High winds and rain almost every weekend which sucks because I can only hunt the weekends 🤦‍♂️and we have way to many hens lol they gobble on roost and shut up the instant they hit the ground

Stick with it Tom. You’ll get one eventually and you’ll get better as the years go by. Took me two years to get my first tom…now most years I am able to kill two and help my son get 1-2 as well.
