@@theofficialonce no it's not head canon, and I know this because if you go back and rewatch episode 23 of DBZ Kai dub or sub, when Gohan, Krillin and Dende duck behind a rock to hide from Vegeta, Vegeta even admits that he probably should not have destroyed the Scouter since he is not yet used to sensing energy, and then when a big fish appears right around the area where Vegeta last sensed the energy of the Z fighters, Vegeta just assumes it must have been the fish he was sensing and then he flies off to continue hunting for the Dragognballs

Vegeta didnt kill Nappa for no reason. Nappa killed Piccilo and that made the dragonballs disappear, defeating the whole reason they came to earth for the wish to be a supersaiyan. Realizing this, Vegeta killed Nappa.

Personally, I think the difference between the DB of old and the current DB is mindset. Think of it like this: Old school DB wasn't the trendsetter we know it as today. It was hungry- desperate to prove itself like a rookie getting drafted into the league. Current DB is that same rookie, but they've gotten complacent at the top. That hunger is sated. The priorities in the story is different now than it was back then. Back in the Namek Saga, there wasn't such a big emphasis on making it marketable to sell merch. Ofc it had merch, but nothing on the levels of today. And yeah, all anime are trying to be marketable and make money, but DB of today is blatant in it's approach. Why else does every new arc now-a-days come with a new highly marketable transformation? Say what you will, but for my money, DB up into Piccolo vs 17 was peak.
