The funny thing about tactility is that moving to virtual interfaces (even with some limited haptics) isn't always a straightforward advancement. 3:13 ok this proves that this is half assed engineering. They could've attached the rubber to a gear that has the exact same ridges as the digital crown instead of the rubber scrolling it directly, that's what's causing the scrolling inconsistency. and for the scroll wheel, use a gear that also has the same number of ridges but on a larger diameter and spaced out evenly, that way the scroll wheel precisely coverts rotational energy and feels perfectly tactile this is a fun 3D printing project, not at 80$ product.

Apple can already tell if someone pinches their fingers with the device and handles it through software already, so all someone would have to do is find a way to trick that mechanism to activate whenever the centre button is clicked.

I don't mind the simple mechanism. I actually like that's mechanical and doesn't try to interfere or work with the software (not that it will be easy or viable) But I can't excuse the cheap casing. They could've used better materials at that pricepoint, even if it's a minimalistic design, aluminum in the casing, or rubber grips. They could've also had a better seal so the oil from the gears doesn't leak. The metal back of the iPods were the standout, because you could engrave them, I would've expected something like that.
