The success of the Maverick is due to its low cost compared to traditional pickups. Anything all electric would be too expensive for this market I believe. I think a better option and honestly a more likely possibility would be the 2.0L and 2.0L hybrid powertrains from the Corolla Cross. But for a more utilitarian vehicle it would be better with a traditional geared transmission.

Yeah, it would have to be cheap. That is exactly why the maverick is so popular. It is very convenient (keeps car practicality), and it's reasonably priced.

Overall, I agree with you. However, as it is the 2.0L is a dog in the Corolla Cross. A Stout would likely weigh even more and have very low truck capability as a result. I think the Camry's 2.4L with 8-spd auto would be a better option.

The Maverick is the only game in town at that size that emulates a midsized or full-size truck. The Santa Cruz is on the other plain as far as pseudo trucks are concerned. So dealers and manufacturers are taking advantage of the scarcity of compact trucks. Once Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, etc, enter the market, we will see a price correction on the Maverick. With how successful the Maverick has been I'd be surprised if Toyota doesn't come out with a Maverick competitor in the next few years. Here is a question that could have major implications: what is defined as a "light truck" under the chicken tax? Simply something with a bed on the back? Or does it need a ladder frame to be considered a "light truck"? I could've sworn I had read somewhere a while ago that a "light truck" had something to do with ladder frame construction. I could be wrong. The reason this could have an impact is because if this new Stout is to be electric, as you know many electric vehicles have a "skateboard" style chassis which is basically a unibody merged with the framework for the battery. If that is not considered a "light truck", Toyota could in theory produce this pickup and import it without the heavy 25% tariff. Now, if anything with a bed on the back is considered a "light pickup", they'd need to produce the Stout within North America to avoid the 25% tariff. Also, Toyota has shown to be a bit reluctant in producing new models that are 100% EV. Maybe that changes with the Stout? I don't know. If it weren't for that prototype you guys found at the show in Japan, I'd bet that Toyota would make this new Stout a hybrid.

Public curiosity and anticipation regarding this truck is so intense that if Toyota delivers a real compact truck at a reasonable price, demand will be off the charts. Waiting lists at dealers will be long. I fear dealer pricing will be predatory (as we saw with the Maverick). A hybrid drivetrain would be the way to go. Plug-in would be great. So would a midgate enabling extension of the truck bed into the rear of the cab. Be bold, Toyota.

I would buy a compact Toyota truck in a heartbeat to use as a daily driver. If they made a heavy duty truck, I would buy that too. I had an older tundra (2nd gen) and then purchased a 2019 tundra with the 5.7. Loved both trucks, but the 5.7 was a beast. It towed my 10,000lb travel trailer like it didn't care (although it drank some gas!). I bought a larger 5th wheel camper and had to get a 1T. I ended up buying the Ram 3500 (been very happy so far). Great work guys, keep up the great work!!

Another possibility for the Stout is for Toyota to do another collaboration with Subaru like they did with the GR86/BRZ. There has been a lot of talk in the Subaru community about wanting them to bring back the BRAT and/or Baja to compete with the Ford Maverick, especially after the Mighty Car Mods BRAT restoration series. Theoretically, they could even use the FA24 engine from the GR86/BRZ so that Toyota techs wouldn't have to learn another Subaru engine, and this would provide an easy path to a more powerful TRD version in the form of the turbo FA24 used in the Outback Wilderness and Ascent. Then they could simply use different drivetrains, with the Subaru getting their Symmetrical AWD and (unfortunately) signature CVT (maybe a manual?🤞), while Toyota uses a FWD/4WD setup and possibly a hybrid version. This would allow the two trucks to differentiate themselves in the marketplace while simultaneously sharing many major components and technologies. This obviously isn't a sure thing, but it is a way for both companies to fill the demand for this kind of vehicle that customers seem to be asking for.

11:24 That was the design I liked the most! Also the "Stout" naming is, good marketing, as long as its a truck that doesn't have a lot of issues on launch. A long time ago I vowed to never buy a new Toyota again, do to the way they run their workers into the ground at their factories & part suppliers... (12 hour shifts, 6 -7 days a week) Only 16 usable hours in a day... so that gets old real quick.

Just saw my first maverick in flesh in Europe and compared to the new ranger that is out here I found that every dimension is way higher in the ranger. Hight, seat hight and hight from ground to sill was the most noticeable difference. Width was a big difference as well. Didn't think of the lenght difference.

My cousin that works for Toyota saying there new truck coming that’s old school style with manual transmission and automatic and hybrid to compete with Ford Maverick. He said they’re trying to keep it in the 20s the price on the 30,000. below the new Toyota Tacoma. Get too many people asking that own businesses asking for work truck can tow little about 4000

I have a 2000 Ranger extended cab with a six foot bed, well maintained with the 3.0 indestructible Vulcan engine and built like a tank. If Toyota comes out with an extended cab 6 foot bed plug in hybrid around $25,000 to start, I’ll get one. Until then, I’m keeping the Ranger.

I think it should look like the very first renderings that came out when this was first leaked. And it can't be all-electric in the states. Ford already showed what to do: hybrid and ICE options. If that's the market you're trying to compete in, then do what that market is asking for.

In my opinion, I feel they are going to be a class ahead if they made it full rear wheel or all wheel drive. The Maverick front wheel drive platform is great but to be used as a truck and possibly tow as a truck, the weight on the rear wheels is important for maintaining adequate traction. I also do not think an all electric version will do well in the US and, as you said, cost would be astronomical to be all electric. Hybrid would be the furthest I would go to maintain the range and lower emissions for the EPA, but all electric would kill the sales when Ford has the hybrid so readily available. Also, being hybrid, the Maverick could make a drive from Florida to Tennessee in a day. An all electric vehicle still can’t do that without stopping to charge and if you can’t find a fast charge, then you have an overnight stay at a hotel that would cost even more money. Not ideal when you can get gas and fill up in a few minutes and be back on the road.

Hopefully Toyota will learn a bit from Ford and Hyundai sales. The Maverick being a huge hit, (own one myself), due to its utilitarian features, pricing, simplification, and the optional hybrid setup. Whereas the Santa Cruise has a high price, less utilitarian features, higher towing capacity, and no hybrid option makes it less desirable. Even though it has a more luxurious interior with better tech. And the DCT in the higher trims with the turbo can limit it a bit. Maverick = truck they turned into car size Santa Cruise = car they turned into a truck Seeing how Ford has a nice size production backlog to fulfill. I feel as though Toyota could potentially take away sales from Ford if they come up with a hybrid AWD that can be as truck looking with all the utilitarian features, price range, and performance of the Maverick.
@palebeachbum
@palebeachbum 5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how you can call the Santa Cruz less utilitarian when it tows more, offers more power, has a waterproof storage bin under the bed, and the tailgate does the same tricks. It also offers a more simplistic powertrain standard without the cost and complexity of a turbo or hybrid. Both vehicles are unibody construction, like a car. The Maverick only looks more truck-ish. It's skin deep. I think Maverick sales are higher due to Ford already being a longtime truck brand with a loyal following and Hyundai deciding on some unfortunate styling. Santa Cruz costs more because it's quite simply a more premium vehicle with more capability.

@kennetho5393
@kennetho5393 5 ай бұрын
@@palebeachbumFirst of all, nobody is going to tow anywhere near 3,500 lbs with the Santa Cruz base engine. The 2.5 turbo might tow a little more, but it has a fragile dual clutch automatic and requires lots of add ons that are not available to get to 5,000 lbs. That and the bed is smaller and less usable thanks to that cover. That and the 2.0 Ecoboost tows and hauls just as good or better.
@palebeachbum
@palebeachbum 5 ай бұрын
@@kennetho5393 your response is mostly conjecture. There's no reason no one wouldn't tow with the base engine if it has the capability. The bed cover is optional. Otherwise I could argue the optional covers for the Maverick limited capability too. It's a silly argument.

It needs to be a hybrid based on the RAV4. If you want an EV base it on the RAV4 Prime. If you want to add a 200 hp electric machine to the rear axle (and the battery/electronics to support it) and have a performance truck that would also be interesting.

I’ve never been a major Toyota fan, mostly because their perceived reliability is overblown in my experience, which drives prices too high. That being said, if they are the first to FINALLY bring a small EV pickup to the US market, I will give it a hard look. Still can’t understand why everyone started with huge EV trucks that cost as much as a starter-home and can’t fully recharge overnight on level 2 . . .
