We don't know much about the ancient Tkon empire, except that it could shift stars, planets and build advanced A.I. called the portals to guard over their outposts.
What wiped them out? Why did they vanish? Let's look at what we do know.

When the ancient remains of the Klingon, Romulan, and the Federation are found but bits and pieces left over after many ages, the oldest civilization of all still goes through space. Unchanged for millennia, still searching for things that make them go.

I recall the destruction of the T'kon homeworlds Star was caused by a Q-like being known as Zero, who had a bet with Q, on weather or not the T'kon would be able to overcome the impending supernova of their home-systems star. When the T'kon were about to stabilize their star, Zero made it go supernova so he would not lose the bet. The Q continuum tried to bring Zero to account for this, but Zero had Friends in the Q Continuum who came to his defence and Q war occurred.

2 planets sharing an orbit, forming an equilateral triangle with their star, is a nice dynamically stable arrangement. Unlikely to form naturally but not implausible. There's a curious pair of moons in our own solar system sharing an orbit, more or less. One in a slightly closer orbit than the other, until it almost catches up with the partner, and pull each other to swap orbital positions, the former chaser becoming the chased. Viewed from one moon, the other is seen to approach from one side, retreat, then later approach and retreat on the other side.

That’s a good point. Though you have to keep in mind humans are expansionist by nature in Trek. We’re cockroaches... we breed and spread more than most other species. Some Trek species, especially older/ancient ones tend to be a bit xenophobic and very bound to their home star system. Combine that with the cultural storehouse that would be the home planet of a culture hundreds of thousands of years old. Losing the home system could mean losing most of your history... or even population. As their home system would of been heavily engineered to maximize population and production in a species that can engineer entire solar systems. In such a culture all outer colonies could be used to fuel and build on the home solar system. Think of(or look up) the World Ship from the TV show Andromeda as an example. They could of had something like that with most of their civilization in one solar system.
@DoctorX17

@@ManicPandaz mmm, fair... Not everyone thinks like humans. Star systems are huge, you could probably fit a few hundred trillion people in various structure in that space, or carefully placed planets all over. I hadn't considered that they might stay in one place due to xenophobia

@@DoctorX17 If they went full on dyson swarm the number is closer to the quadrillions. constructing orbital habitats and spreading out to soak up all the sunlight from the central star. More if you assume they are not dependant on solar output for their energy needs. thats a fairly safe bet considering some of the other power's they've shown. Frankly most scifi writers are bad at estimating how many people should be in an interstellar civilization. they put out numbers for galaxy spanning civs that could be packed into a single system as long as you didnt confine yourself to earthlike planets. Problem is this makes it even more absurd that a super nova would take them out. There are theoretical techniques for harvesting mass off a star useing nothing more advanced than what we possess today. Just requires space access, lots of automation, the will to initiate the project and time. Its more or less a side branch of the same tech you'd need to house most of your population in orbital habitats. takes hundreds of thousands of years but you basicly pull matter off the star till its mass is below the limit where it can go supernova. going a step further you keep all the non hydrogen for makeing other stuff and carefuly feed the hydrogen back into the star and you can keep it going for far longer than its natural lifespan. The only reason we couldnt start such a project today is we'd need to get sufficient industry out of earths gravity well to bootstrap the rest. look up the "Starlifting" episode from Isaac Arthur here on youtube if the topic intrests you.
@DoctorX17
@DoctorX17 3 жыл бұрын
@@merendell yeah, space is *huge*, and estimating how many people can fit... Not something on a scale humans are used to. One of the other things with a star going supernova -- it's not something that happens suddenly, like in a few hours, so you'd think they would have noticed with all their fancy powerful tech and dealt with it... Starlifting does sound really cool, definitely looking into that.

The Voth history is filled with their biases slowing advancement, like with trans-warp technology. Why improve your species if you already think you’re the best one out there 🤷‍♂️

@@ManicPandaz I was a given. I was drawing inferences with Christianity before the Reformation. Also the "Humanity First" mantra running through Sci-fi and fantasy, in the last few decades. I wonder how Starfleet would handle a truly advanced species and/or civilization that really was not held back by such attitudes, and really put humans on the stump for acting advanced when they really weren't. "One does not have to tell others he is a man, it is self-evident upon first sight." or "One does not have to tell others they are [advanced or evolved], it is self-evident upon first sight." The Q tried to make their case, but really come off as mere people with hyper-advanced toys, like the Greek Gods. I think two of the very few truly advanced species ever encountered in Star Trek were the Prophets(DS9) and the Organians(TOS). "Adults, who are not their parents, do not play with children."

According to Memory Alpha their star began to dim 100,000 years after the fracturing of the Tkon Empire possibly due to loosing the stellar engineering technology they seem to have. And then their fate after being driven underground by the surface of their world freezing is pretty much identical to the civilisation on Aia. Developing androids that eventually kill their creators. Though these androids would eventually die out rather then ascending to another plane of existence

Serious question does anyone know if when this was written it was known that there is no way intelligent life would have enough time to evolve on a planet orbiting a star large enough to go supernova? Not sure if it just was not known at this time or the writers just chose to ignore it because supernova is a cool way to end a super advanced civ?

Great episode as always but-- How could a civilization that can create solar systems be undone by one sun even their homeworld sun going super nova? It would seem they could 'fix' that or easily just move elsewhere?
@hamanu666

They were a type 2 civilization and had thousands if not millions of stars at their disposal. It makes no sense for their empire to collapse just because their home system went nova.
@AnonEyeMouse
@AnonEyeMouse 3 жыл бұрын
Super Nova affect star systems for light years around them. It COULD be that the very fact that the T'Kon could sculpt systems was why one super nova was so devastating. Think about it, lesser sp0ace faring races need to travel TO valuable systems. The T'Kon just went to the closest system and sculpted it to their will, reducing travel and communication delays. Chances are the T'Kon Empire was densely compacted, with every system in close proximity to their homeworld being heavily populated and developed. No need to expand across a quadrant for them. A neighbourhood of 100Ly could support a civilisation larger than the federation. All well and good until their origin star starts misbehaving. They attempt to fix it, triggering a colossal Super Nova which bombards the surrounding space with a massive Gamma energy burst.in the span of a century, the devastation could spread throughout an empire. No warning eyond the silence from the core worlds and the fact any ship going to those core systems is never seen again.

Yes. In the book, one reads that the Tkon actually were succeeding in replacing their dying sun, using a type of lattice work around the sun that would subeseuently transport the dying one out and have a nother one transported in. Spoiler alert. Q had his hands in their failure to do it. He effectively interfered and the system was destroyed. Tkon Empire declined after that.

My guess is a shift of power. If earth fell, would the federation endure? It seems humanity was key to its formation and growth. Maybe if the key race diminishes, the other races don’t remain cohesive. Sort of like when a matriarch or patriarch passes and a family splinters and goes their own ways…that person was the only thing holding the family together.

I gotta say the story of the T'Kon Civilization and the planet IA, seem to resemble another story. Told by the ancient books and the Book of Pythia, it almost resembles.....you guessed it!! Kobol!! The Thirteenth Tribe were exclusively Cylon, and tried desperately to leave from their "Earth" to warn the colonies of mistreating their Artificial Intelligence. And this all occured over 160 thousand years ago. So could the ancient planet IA NOT possibly be T'Kon but perhaps the Cylons who left Earth after the survivors of the 12 Colonies landed on their "Earth"? As for the T'Kon themselves, as the video says, information is apocryphal. However, there is a NON canocal source book that gives a bit of a glimpse of the origins of the T'Kon. They were influenced by the incredible "Devil's Heart" or Ko'n'ya from Vulcan history, or Klingon History and the Pagrashtak. Even the Iconians as well calling it the "Dream Gem". All of these races were heavily influenced by its powers, and all burst into incredible splendor (except the Vulcans, it was taken from Vulcan by the Romulans) and the stone's power made Romulus a powerful state. The T'Kon were also discovered to be influenced by it. As they were described as a "Simple hunter/gatherer culture until the stone burst forth from the sky and landed on the T'Kon Homeworld, they scabbled at the dirt and from that became a vast and extremely powerful stellar empire". So if anything the gem that was a seed of the Guardian of Forever "Meant to grow in better soil" says the Guardian. But the architects were mortal, and as they died a million years before, the gem found and manipulated history between Imperial Splendor, waves of murder and war, and just the greedy and savage scrabbling for the merest scraps of its power. It created greatness and tragedy, it gave Empires the hand to rule the galaxy, only to be betrayed by it, when the gem wanted to leave it. For reference of all this, this information was obtained from a NON canocal source called "The Devil's Heart" by Diane Duane. It is an STTNG novel, and is also on KZbin as an audio book. Well worth your time.
