Brilliant Green for the win. Wish they were more readily available in stores. I've only ever seen six...and they can give with me. Black Neons are a close second. Always love the bristlenoses in any tank they can cohabitate with. They add an interesting experience where you never quite know where they will be. Maybe on a rock, on a leaf, the glass, or hiding in a decoration.

Good video as always and a nice list. White clouds are one of my favorite fish and I have had them on and off for years. I have always found mine to do best in the 68-70 degree range in groups of 10+. They are just so much more active for me in these conditions.

I stared too long at the betta in the white cloud tank waiting for it to move
@markvonwisco736911 ай бұрын
This is a great list of colorful beginner fish. Golden White Clouds are another alternative to the common version. One caution: bettas and plecos might not be a good pairing. I had a male plakat betta that HATED plecos. I think it was due to the betta and plecos being roughly the same size. Finally: not a fish, but cherry shrimp are another great beginner critter for smaller aquariums.

Do cherry shrimp need to be kept in groups? I was thinking of adding one or two to my little medaka rice fish tank...
@garg45313 ай бұрын
@@emmagatewood3898I think so. Like many small fish they tend to feel safer in groups, plus they breed very easily which is always a fun experience and will help to replace any that might get eaten by fish

I am a long time cichlid keeper, but having downsized to a 40 breeder, I now keep kribensis. I currently have 5 female in my tank with platys and swordtails(which the kribs keep the offspring from surviving) and a rubberlip pleco. I am now on the lookout for an African butterfly fish as the tank is now seasoned as it has been up are running for about 1.5 years.

Check local prices on panda corys. This depends on your country. In Canada I'm seeing panda corys listed for $12-$15 (CAN) each. Other corys, such as the bronze/albino and peppered varieties are much more reasonably priced at around $5-$6 each.

Great video 👍 I've had all these fish in different tanks through the years and my most favourite is the red and black harlequin rasbora always kept them and purchased some purple ones with gold tipped noses those are nice little stunners and quick breeders. Pleco's are great but i prefer Hillstream loaches against them with adorable playful personalities in larger groups which i have, the only thing against them is the expense. I had Endlers and never again being an hybrid of the original guppy i found them to be fin nippers especially to fish with larger tails and especially proper guppies.

Cherry barbs maxing out at about an inch? I guess mine are behemoths then. Unfortunately, the panda corys we get here in Croatia are very frail compared to some other corys. It's pretty much hit or miss with them. I've had groups of 8-10, sometimes more, where I would either have 1 or 2 losses, or a complete wipeout. All fish appeared to be healthy and behaved normally, and then they would die without any external signs of illness. If I had any survivors after the first two weeks, those would be the ones I'd never have any problems with. They are fairly cheap though, compared to the other "fancy" corys (anything that's not the usual aeneus and paleatus) that we get here - 2-3€ per cory for pandas, compared to 9-10€ per cory for sterbais.

Just never get a pair of bristlenose plecos. I learned the hard way that they breed like crazy - which is fun and cute at first - until you realise that the fry are like tiny armored superfish so nothing eats them in your tank. Which means that you are now a proud parent of MANY bristlenose pleco babies, and yeah. No fish keeper wants the neverending bristlenose pleco babies you've got.
@PrimeTimeAquatics11 ай бұрын
Yes they do!

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I admit, the abundance of bristlenose plecos might be a local problem. It's a super common aquarium fish in my country, and I'm certainly not the only one that has had a baby boom 😅 Lots of online ads about them.

these "beginner fish" videos and talks always interest me in my experiences and with what some of the fish at work at listed as beginner ive always disagreed with a lot of the fish not actually being beginner fish for one reason or another that isnt always related to the keeping and husbandry of that fish such as the fish doesnt travel well or is prone to disease or is more often bred of looks over healthy genetics and such but personally i also believe there is no such thing as a beginner fish if someone really wants a specific fish and puts in the work and research to give that fish proper care they will be able to keep any fish as their first fish

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Oddly, I had heard similar comments about locally-grown zebra danios from folks in different parts of the US. I hope they're not on the decline. However, here in South Korea, the ones I have been keeping have been extremely hardy (and no bent spines). The same holds true for the ones my students have been keeping (for those who remembered to keep a lid on their tank).
@squiddysan11 ай бұрын
@@DahLekKnight Here in Croatia, zebra danios are practically indestructible. I tend to joke that they would easily survive a nuclear fallout, along with the roaches.
