You do know that 90% of actors don’t become famous, only 10% actually make it to the big screen, television or gain some sort of fame, most actors are not even rich, you’re only referring to 10% and not the 90% of actors, most actors don’t even make it past their plays, commercials, small parts or anything else that doesn’t shine a big light on them, and most of them do it for the love of the art.

I dont care about the fame or the fortune that comes from acting as much as i care about making a project and the experience and hard work that goes into it also the friendships made from it. yes having fame and fortune would be awesome, but if i wanted fortune i would go to college to become a surgeon or something and make a more stable future, and fame is cool at first but then it gets annoying.

"Did you choose acting, or did acting choose you?" This is a concept I've discussed many times with people who don't understand why I'm "wasting my time" with a career in which I may never succeed. I tell them that acting chose me, I didn't choose acting. I act because it's my passion. I NEED to act. If I don't act, I die. Some may think that's a tad dramatic, but I am a actor after all :-)

Move to LA but have some money to get a side job at McDonald's or something. Sometimes you have to live in your car while surfing for opportunities. And with time, you'll land that audition. But practice by yourself too. Monologues and just watch movies, observe their movements and see how they portray their emotions. But most importantly be yourself and portray it in your own way!

Elizabeth Ramirez Firstly, have a solid foundation. Make sure you live in a flat or a house that you rent or own, and have a job or two that provides financial security. Secondly, get the training. It’s crucial as an upcoming actor, that you hone your skills. You’re not gonna get an audition opportunity from a casting director, if you’re mediocre at best. You can train by doing projects with local youth theatres, and even apply to drama school for extensive training. With the adequate training, you can now focus on building your professional acting details and be eligible for an agent.

And Jennifer Lawrence is a great example. Yes she was discovered, but not every discovery goes somewhere. She has never had a real acting class in her life -- she uses her instinct and imagination -- and I don't think anyone ever told her that she should be in class and she'll fail without it. And look where she is now.

Great advice! There is one more thing you can do to make it in this business as an actor. Write a great film script. Put yourself in the story and if you are as good as the script is, you're on your way. Ben Afflect and Matt Damon did it and look where they are today.

No Honeybunny, anything is possible, but if someone really wants to pursue an acting career, you will have a greater probability of being able to do so if you can dedicate all or most of your time to it. One of the problems has to do with exactly what you said. "Oh, I can work 9-6 and still be able to go on auditions!" What about classes? What about marketing yourself as a actor, learning how to do that, having the flexibility to be able to take off work, and then what if you book the job?

How many great actors had a solid financial base when they started? I'm guessing close to 0%, but they sacrificed and knew their goals-
@Sunstarrock

Gogeous Gadot, this video I made is not to say that if you don't do these things that you will not make it. They are 10 reasons why MOST don't make it. What I'm saying is that if you do these things it is more likely that you will have success. What you said is somewhat true about great actors, but what I invite you to look at is how many have failed to realize their dream, because they started out thinking that it was going to be easy and that they could do it without a lot of money, which means working full-time with little time to focus on their careers and then never ended up becoming a full-time working actor. That's what I mean. Financial base doesn't mean being rich. It simply means that if you can create passive income streams or work to make money on your own terms and on your own time, it will be easier to start your acting career as opposed to working full-time and trying to squeeze it in. Are you an actress?
@that1guy335

ActingCareerStartUp I agree with all the information in the video and I'm now a subscriber. My only point was to not discourage those who don't have money. Besides, the top reason that people don't make it in acting is a reason that you can't generally acknowledge, and that is they have no talent. They want fame and glory w/out the sacrifice, which is a common mentality of the new American generation. Thanks for the great vid-

A couple questions - I can see how having a financial base is so important, but it's also a very difficult for someone to accomplish while still young when most actors get started and that takes a tremendous amount of time away from the focus on acting. Would you have more specific advice on how someone could accomplish that. I don't think many people would disagree with that point, but I think most people wouldn't follow it because they don't know how. Also you mentioned actors are on the internet and the forums instead of doing research. I'm sure they're going on the internet and forums to do research so I would think the problem isn't "not doing research," but doing research in the wrong places. So what would you say is the right way to research the industry?

I may not be an expert to answer this. Here is one word that can answer both of your questions: *Economy* To answer your first question, when people are young, what are their usual spending habits and liabilities (such as student loans, rent, etc) and how much can they save to build some assets (such as bonds, stocks, housing, etc)? Again, this varies with each person and luck may be involved to have the best financial base (*Personal Economy*) To answer your second question, the economy plays a huge part in number of movies and shows a studio is going to make. For example, *in times of inflation,* production costs will go up and studios will make less profit. Thus, they will not make as much movies and there are a handful of A-listed actors who for sure will get priority in getting the roles while the lower profile actors will have more difficulty in even getting an audition (*World Economy*) Hope this helps

The reason I want to become an actor and will go into full force mode to accomplish it is because 1) I love the craft itself, ever since I was younger ( I'm 12) my friends would always ask me if I wanted to play dress up or tea party, I didn't take intrest in those things I wanted more. And, that's how I found acting to express myself. 2) My own character was always misunderstood. If I can get someone to understand me even if it means playing someone else I would love that. And lastly, I love writing. In my school I've won writing contest and had my teachers tell me I should consider writing a book. So I figured if I know how to put different characters into different Point Of Views and give the reader a look into the characters life without generally making it too obvious ( that/which i can do with acting experience and skills) , I could write a book. O yeah, and I want to make the most of my life. We are put on this Earth to get taken away, so live YOUR life while YOU can .Well, whoever you are, wherever you are My Name is " Tyra Sauceda" keep on the lookout for me!

I found this to be very insightful. I work full time as a teacher and as an actor. I have recently been working as a lead on a new television show and it is an absolute grind. It is possible to do both, but you really have to sacrifice (sleep being a big one). I have not landed that "Mega" role yet, but getting closer. But I have to admit that having to work full time as a single parent does create some issues, for example being able to travel even somewhat locally.

There's more to consider than that. This was my topic for my own subscribers this week. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

but if you have a 100k job doing something else you’re also not a full artist and the results you get will be a reflection on how much time your put on your acting career. You will rarely make that money with acting this way, as soon as you get something bigger you need to quit the job and you won’t, because you value money over your artistic career which makes sense. thanks for sharing anyway.

As a film director myself I have to say I 100% agree with you. I have met many talented actors/resses who always complain about not getting the breaks but when I have tried to work with them I've learned that they do not get the breaks not because of circumstance but because they are unwilling to go that extra mile to achieve what they claim to want. The business savvy is also true. Some have 3 jobs (Which is a sign of financial incompetence imop) yet not one job they do is acting.

If you don't have an agent-- Consider the current trends in film, broadcast and theater, the hottest film genres and "realistically" imagine how much better you would have performed in those acting roles! There's where you want focus; consider seasonal episodic television and movie sequels in PRE-PRODUCTION and prepare to go in and prove why you're better qualified for the job! Don't allow someone else to get the role you want!
@jamie.gilbert

ABSOLUTELY TRUE on all 10 points, financial security IS the most important, because the industry demands audition availabilty in the 3 top markets: "Hollywood- Atlanta- New York" at a moments notice to truly be competitive with already "established actors," otherwise the other 9 "Failure Reasons" will be irrelevent. The fact that some people are put-off by something as trivial as a simulated drumroll could be an indication that they lack the temperament for acting in the first place.
@TheTurlupine
@TheTurlupine 11 жыл бұрын
How can you have financially secure if you have to be available all the time for acting jobs that will not pay you enough? It is really a question that I am asking myself because I would like to make acting a career, but I also am a student and a part-time worker. Nobody helps me financially!
@jamie.gilbert
@jamie.gilbert 11 жыл бұрын
TheTurlupine excellent! you're already asking yourself the question; you're obviously TALENTED, so, eventually if you're not already living in one of the (3) markets, then you need to "make-the-move," sacrifice, working part-time and attending school IN the market greatly reduces the financial burden, and allows more time to "compete, kickbutt and book the acting job that you DESERVE!" That's why we're called "starving artist!" Now go get 'em!
@SolFutureFirst
@SolFutureFirst 10 жыл бұрын
There are other markets as well. Specifically, in Canada. Top 2 markets up here would be Toronto and Vancouver. We film a LOT of American TV shows up here and get our share of film work. Granted its less than those other top 3 places but still pretty good. At least you stand a better chance of getting noticed here. IN the other places there are about 50 other people who look like you, if not more.

Decrying someone for pointing a 'simulated drum roll' as a poor example of acting skills does not mean one does not have the temperament for acting. Are you in the US? The industry there is TOTALLY different to here in the UK. I agree to a point about the financial part but ONLY to a degree.
@jamie.gilbert
@jamie.gilbert 10 жыл бұрын
Aphrodite2009 Okay, but the simulated drum-roll was intended to be annoying; thats nothing compared to a panel of condescending casting directors, looking to cast "one" lead role. My guess is that the actor who "cracks under pressure," may not be able to recover, and possibly ruin the audition, all because of the "metaphorical drumroll." I'm just say'n!

Actually, everything he said in the video was spot on. 1) researching your industry is not the same as going online and asking questions. 2) An actor shouldn't necessarily ask what he is getting into, if the person was born an actor. 3) Sure you eventually choose a career path; however, most successful actors didn't go into acting to be famous, they did it because they love the craft. This video is not contradicting at all. Cheers.

Many think that all you have to do is get an agent or find auditions. Training for many of them isn't even something they think about. To do everything that is necessary to break into the business successfully, it takes time and effort. The more time you have, the easier it will be.

I really needed to see this exactly when I did. I am in the stage in my career where re-committment is necessary. This requires honest & humble re-evaluation. These are 10 points that helped put me in the right headspace. Much Appreciated. Thank you.

Acting definitely chose me. I took it with some friends as a blow off class. But acting just took my eye after that and I kept with it.

I have been in and out of so many acting classes more than acting jobs or performing on stage. Been on set as a background performer in front of the camera rather than an actor. Had an agent one time. But I wasn't making that guy or myself any money so he let me go. With family members discouraging me about pursuing acting as a career and with culinary jobs getting in the way of it (plus it being the only means I have in making money), I have given up on acting. I won't even pursue it as a hobby either. And with some shady people owning the movie industry in Hollywood, it gave me strong second thoughts about having an acting career. I guess you have to pay a terrible price when it comes to being famous. Though I do find it frustrating some of my friends did make it into the acting business. Because they had the time, effort and money to do it, I didn't. Therefore, I FAILED!!

Fame in itself is kind of a con. It's hard to walk in a street unnoticed, let alone somewhere super populated. Relationships after fame could be fake, friendships forged from your fame, ect. For me, that's not a pro.

I was going to say that there is no rule that says you have to take more than 2 acting classes a week unless you are in school or conservatory or if you can afford to do it I am just talking about actors with a regular job and giving some advice that has helped me. Do what works for you.

I think i can be a good actress, but i'm afraid to try even when i'm alone. I kinda feel like it chose me, this feeling of something inside of me that needs to get out. It's overwhelming at times. I don't even wanna be famous, I just wish I had the courage to try to act

i dont understand the "if you chose acting" part. I chose acting because acting cant chose me. I have to act in order to communicate. I am not good at speaking, but acting is something else, eventhough it involves speaking. I thought this video would help me and it kind of did, but not in the way i was hoping for. It sort of shaked my ground a bit. I have no money for acting class, does that mean i cant act/become an actress? confused but thanks for the other stuff

This is so informative! However, for number 1, what do you mean by research? Is it general research about the industry? Agencies in my area? Acting itself? I am just a little confused.

No. By 'type' it means what type of person you can portray. Can you be geeky, a jock, girl-next-door, villain, ect. Honestly, most of the time it your type depends on your appearance. By knowing this, you can go for the right audition and even get the jobs.

It takes more than just natural instinct. There's so much more to acting than just the raw talent. It's easy to think you're well and good at acting, but I dare you to go and jump into a film audition when you've never performed on

with reason # 2 do you suggest we hit the lottery or... In one fell swoop you say working a 9-5 job will not help your acting career I get that, then if i don't work and I'm broke I can't then go do what you say not to do in reason #1. Where are these magical multiple streams of residual income coming from again???? How can you take classes when you don't work a job to make the money to take the classes?

I have also been searching for an agent which is very difficult to find. But you have to have thick skin. I believe that you have to live by the credo that 1000 no's will be worth that one "YES!" Oh! and if you get the chance, check out the show "Brotherhood of Silver."

If you have a natural talent and instinct how how to convey the right emotion, then of course someone can do amazing on a first audition. Jennifer Lawrence did it and look where she is now, for people who have the talent/instincts that she has classes are NOT essential. Just because you may not have the standout talent and need to train to become decent, doesnt mean everyone has to. You sound like a pretentious actress who takes it WAY too seriously. Acting is being the best liar you can.
