I thought I was alone in my love of Chet Baker Sings, my rock friends all look at me strangely when I mention him. Then I saw others made comments about it in their reviews to other ‘records I listen to’. He had a superb voice, all that talent and one of the best trumpet players ever. When I listen to his music I can’t help but think of his tragic end. BTW you look amazing and a welcome change to the other old guys doing such collections.

Great video. Of all the top ten lists I've viewed recently my tastes come closest in agreement to yours, although over the years I think my list would tend to change. The Desire album I took in the late 70's to a Sunday night coffee house that was held at a religious sisters convent near where I was going to school at the time. That album was well loved and I lent it to the use of Sister Peggy. Gives me fond memories of those days.

First time viewer here Melinda. Loved your video, both style and content! The story of your childhood, your mon, the red Pinto . . . . yes, music really brings us back in time where we can really FEEL the music. I too have so many early memories that involve music. It's a great feeling when you hear a song and can remember back to exactly where you were, or the first time you heard a song, or can recall your age or where you lived, etc.. Music helps us connect to our past and can bring us great joy, even when those times were not joyful, but the music helped us get through!

I just got that Blue Note Chet Baker Sings and it sounds sooooo clean and crisp! Thanks for sharing your favorite records and drawing attention to that fact that vinyl collecting is not just about what sounds best or is the most sought after record but it's also largely about nostalgia. A few of my favorites are very nice sounding reissues of 90s albums I listened to in Junior High/HS including Little Earthquakes, Core, Absolute Torch and Twang (original 89 pressing), Formica Blues. Of course it's hard to pick a favorite but those are a few I play more often.

Hey Melinda, such a wonderfully personal video. Our favourite albums evoke unique memories that only we hold personally. ❤ Your story about "Gold Rush '79" is so bittersweet. The songs on that LP are tied to your experiences with your dear Mum and her red Pinto, which was clearly a significant happy place for you. 😊 Those songs on that cartridge are permanently etched in your DNA. I could see on your face what those moments mean to you. ❤❤ Funny you mentioned the Baby's as I recently bought 2 used Babys LP's including "Broken Heart" which features "Isn't It Time". I know what you mean about John Waite's voice in that moment. 😊 Some other nice choices. The Zombies album was an obvious one though I'm surprised that your Harry Styles or a Gil Evans didn't make the cut. In my humble opinion, some of your best videos are when you speak from the heart. I suspect that ironically, maybe they're also maybe your most difficult to make in a way? Does that sound accurate? In any case your beautiful smile pushes through because ultimately the music ties all those wonderful times together. Speaking from experience I can relate to this. Music is The Doctor. 😊😊 As always love your work. Take care Melinda. Cheers ❤❤😊😊

Your story about never being able to go back to that Red Pinto with your Mom made me actually cry as it was SOOO bittersweet and your quiet emotions said SO much. I was truly touched, and for what it's worth, I will honestly NEVER forget your story --- truly. In reference to your story, below is one of my favorite quotes that always echoes inside me when I think about memories of my own Mom and others I've loved & lost in this lifetime & it goes: " You Know That Place Between Asleep and Awake, the Place Where You Can still Remember Dreaming?? --- That's Where I'll Always Love You --- That's Where I'll Be Waiting ". I LOVE that quote --- and I am sure that your Mom is in THAT place loving you as much as ever and is always there waiting for you with a BIG smile in that Red Pinto and with GoldRush 79 Volume One blasting on the 8 track :) --- Thank you SO much again for sharing your touching story and may God Bless you & yours always !!

Great list. Very nice to hear your memories of your mom with music. I also have childhood memories listening to music with my parents. With my dad it was with a lot of Cassettes in my dad's car (he died more than 20 years ago, we are old now). I remember he had two shoe boxes full of cassettes under the driver's seat, many white shell and some 8-Track cartridges, with albums from The Rolling Stones ("Sticky Fingers", "Let It Bleed", "Hot Rocks"), Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Santana, KISS, ZZ Top, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, James Brown, and some other Classic Rock stuff like that. With my mom it was with Vinyls, CDs, Videos and VHS movies of bands and concerts like Woodstock 1969 and 1994, Monterey Pop Festival, Live Aids, The Wall (Pink Floyd), The Song Remains The Same (Led Zeppelin), Tommy and Quadrophenia (The Who), Casey Kasem's Rock n' Roll Goldmine series, etc, and a lot of The Beatles. Also with her I used to listen to Fleetwood Mac, Heart, The Mamas & the Papas, ABBA, The Monkees, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Queen, Bee Gees, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Frank Zappa, CSN&Y, David Bowie, Iggy Pop / The Stooges, The Velvet Underground / Lou Reed, T.Rex, War, Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Neil Diamond, Dire Straits, Supertramp, Journey, Carole King, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, MC5, early Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and The Cars.

K-Tel records were an iconic part of 70's pop culture. I love that one of your top-played records is one of those records. Also, that Duran Duran cover features art from iconic 80's artist Patrick Nagel. It's a shame that he died so young. Beautiful art!

I have so many top ten favorites in Jazz, Rock, R & B, Country and Pop. I don’t think I could ever pick out just ten. Nothing wrong with that K-Tel album of your either! I have many of them! K-Tel was the “Now That’s What I Call Music” back in the day! At the beginning of this video, I thought to myself, she’s going to show that Odessey & Oracle album by the Zombies. Sure enough, I was correct! Then again, I was expecting to see Van Halen, which you did not pick. Regardless, enjoy your favorites, and I’ll enjoy mine. The joy of music! I chose Street Legal as my Bob record but Desire was the other one I considered. I think Desire was the first Dylan record I really got into. I also have a memory of backpacking in Greece in 1981 and there was a bar that had Hurricane on the jukebox. The song, being a long one, was split in 2 (Side A and B). We’d play that single over and over at Jonas’ Electric Bar which was the inspiration for the name of my channel. Thanks for sharing your top 10!

Great selections! I have my top 10 a couple or a hundred times over. You talk about Jazz albums a lot, I love Jazz, something you (and everyone else here) might do is when you are digging around in the bins, look for Black Jazz albums from post WWII, when the 33 1/3 came out. There are many wonderful and powerful records which are not on major labels. Some are Jazz from pre-war groups others are new in the late 1940's to mid-1950's. Great stuff.

I want to cogratulate you on your excellent presentation. I enjoyed your relaxed stle of presenting. You are very clear in your presentation and you speak with confidence. I didn't have to backtrack and figure out, "Now what did the person say?"Don't feel ashamed about the Ktel record. A good record is a good record. And 'Heart of Glass' was a great song as well as the other songs. I remember them well. It was a great time for radio. And I'm old enough, I'm afraid, to remember those Pintoes. The Willie Nelson album was my best college friend's favorite. He used to play it when we went off campus in his car. I have or had the Linda Ronstadt album. I recently gave it to my 24-25 year-old niece. I nearly dropped to the floor when you pulled out Odessey and Oracle from the Zombies, one of my favorie groups behind The Beatles. I don't have it and must get it. I only have their Greatest Hits or whatever it is called. The only Mobile Fidelity record I have is of the Beatles's Abbey Road. I got it brand new and only played it a few times and recorded onto cassette so I wouldn't wear it down. I only had so much time and so much money in college and graduate school. Ineed to get back to listening more if I can. I'm the kind of person who likes to sit down and do nothing but give my full-devoted attention to the music when I'm listening, so it can be hard to work in the time.

That's a great list, and thinking that way always makes me appreciate my favorites too! I've got a K-Tel as well that we had as an 8-track back then, but ours was "Sundown". It has "All the gold in California", and "Devil went down to Georgia" uncensored with the S.O.B. line that I really got a kick out of when I was 6. My favorite music comes from back then, even though I don't remember much of it from that time. I just don't think the good stuff made it onto the radio in my small town, you know? We didn't even figure out how to get channel 18 (MTV) on the TV until mid-1985 if I remember correctly, as it only had buttons for 2-13 on the front. Anyway, sometime between when disco died and shoulder pads took over, Falco made "Junge Roemer" and I play it all the time now.

Nice selection Melinda. Duran Duran's Rio is very iconic indeed and what i like about those band is that they consisted of ''real analog'' musicians as there are some really good songs with killer bass lines on that album. The Zombies album's one of my all-time favorite too, i recently bought a vinyl copy/reissue of this one though it was only available in stereo which mix which left me dissatisfied. I consider withou exaggerating that album as good as some greatest albums from that time such as Pet Sounds or Rubber Soul

Hi Melinda! I love Duran Duran and their album "Rio" and also "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" as well as their first record. I hope no one would roast you for the K-Tel Gold Rush '79. I am going to keep an eye out for that 8 track. I come across them sometimes. I can tell that record means a lot to you. Love that you share these stories with us. I'm also happy that you like Thelonious Monk too. I have a couple of his records. Chet Baker "Sings" is amazing, isn't it? I found a 1956 copy of that on vinyl at a Salvation Army about 20 years ago and was so excited to find it. I also found a few years ago at a local Goodwill Chet Baker and Art Pepper "Playboys" from 1958 on vinyl. So shocked to find that! I recommend that release to you as well if you do not already have it. I have so many favorite go-to albums: The Divinyls (any of their records, really), XTC "Skylarking" and "Black Sea," Siouxsie And The Banshees "Tinderbox," and Rush records too. ~ Nicola

The Duran Duran I should really get. The Zombies I almost got this summer, but then there were 5 other albums too, and had to pick ;-) The Dire Straits is so on my list, in that exact version, but I fear I've listened too it too much in my walkman in the early 90s that it may just end up sitting there. And it's bloody expensive, maybe even more here than in the US. Thanks very much, so inspiring.

You know it never ceases to amaze me the things we do remember when triggered by a certain song or seeing the album. As for KTel...I have that same album as well as a bunch of comps too...Ronco also did great records and i do remember the commercials on TV and the mailers we would get where you pick what you want and stick it on the order form like a stamp...fun and happy times. As for Albums that get a lot of play time..I do Love Elton John's madman from VMP...an amazing album and such a beautiful blue too. I also have Duran Durans Rio...mine is a Columbia House copy and has Hungry Like The Wolf is also a 5:14 edit. A friend loaned me his copy of Chet Baker Sings which is now on my shopping list...great tracks to kick back and relax to. Fats Domino and The Partridge Family records I have get a good amount of play time...both take me back to being a young kid stuck in my room with a stack of 45's and a few albums. I remember piling the 45s up as far as possible where they would still play. Surely i can't be the only kid that did that. As for music that reminds me of my mom...Bob Seger who made such killer albums and IMO have held up great. I have seen a couple of other channels doing this same topic...and I for one love it🙂
