Oh yeah. It was my first job in games in my senior year of college. Small team of maybe 5 or 6 active developers and a producer. I was brought on as a level design intern. I mostly made climbing, combat levels in test stages just trying to make an impression. After our SECOND lead designer quit the project, I was named 'lead designer'. In just a few months, imagine that. As you can probably tell, production was pretty insane. My work was revised or overwritten every day, our producer would scream and pound on our desks, no one talked to me or replied in group chat. As ironic as it may seem, I was actually put on camera setups for almost more than a month. I perfected everything because of the complaints about Afro Samurai 1's cameras, and within a week of working on something else, the cameras were all overwritten and broken again. This was normal. The stress of the last few months of production and college finals simultaneously actually made me sick. After a single no-call, no-show, I was fired. My producer denied me the backpay that he owed me (we never got payed on time), and I was trying to take him to court before realizing I had more to lose by pursuing the case. So, I just gave it up. Not to go on a tangent, but my point is that this project was a nightmare. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it come out just to crash and burn. Versus Evil pulled their support shortly after release and Redacted Studios went bankrupt and collapsed. Pretty crazy.

That is an insane story. If it wasn't this game, I wouldn't believe it. The game definitely felt incomplete. At times, even broken. I once went on a combat loop during the stage after the platforming and it went on for a good hour before I restarted the game and it worked fine. Sucks to hear that you guys weren't getting paid on time. Ultimately did the project go through three lead designers? Did they end up quitting because of the producer, or arbitrarily fired? And were you aware of any QA testing on the game?

Yeah the best condition it was ever in was when me and our build engineer (close friend of mine) tag-teamed the PAX East build and stabilized it with all the enemy spawns/song changes/cinematics/so forth. It was the part where you exit the temple and start fighting all these guys out in the snow. Anyways, if you got that far, you must've noticed the horrible invincible samurai enemy types, awkward spawn ins, insanely loud SFX, and so forth. It was an uphill battle with the producer micromanaging people over other peoples' work. That level ended up being a game breaker for a lot of people who recorded playthroughs on KZbin. Was hard to watch for me and my friend, haha. The pay was secondary to how I felt about Afro Samurai. Some of us truly grew to love the franchise and Kuma. Seeing it go down the way it did was a shame, and a big letdown for actual long time fans of the franchise. We weren't oblivious to that fact. The producer, different story. The other designers quit the project to pursue other things. We were never super close, but I always believed that they could somehow sense the project going downhill from the start. In the actual end-game credits, the producer listed only himself as the lead designer. Got a kick out of that. Towards the last 3 months of production, QA was outsourced from a third-party contractor. They were doing their job, but due to the intense micromanagement from my producer, I hardly got a chance to look at the tasks/issues they were writing. They were writing bugs for features we were being told to 'revamp' or 'redesign' while they were weeks late for their milestones. So it was hard for them to even stay updated with writing bugs. I often stayed late and played through the game repeatedly, fixing bugs as I went along. It was the best I could do to prevent overhead buildup from all these new features suddenly going in. That platforming part wasn't even supposed to be there! It was a last minute integration that threw off all the cameras and added months onto production. Like I said, it was my first real job in games but holy hell, I could tell it wasn't supposed to be like that. The end product speaks for itself.

The condition of the game wasn't exactly a shocker. We gave them a build almost every month for almost a year. They knowingly shipped it in the condition it was in. It was only because of the consumer backlash that they pulled it. They shouldn't have shipped it at all. But I'm not shitting on them; they're trying to give independent studios a chance, so that's good on them. The actual studios, however, are headed by maniacs with friends in high places and deep pockets. I've seen it during my employment at Redacted Studios, as well as across the mobile gaming industry. Indie is best homegrown, rather than a business model.

I'll be honest, 80% of these shouldn't even be on the list, personally I wouldn't consider these half finished 2 dollar early acces asset flips as games a bad game should only deserve to be looked at or even noticed, if you can at least notice that it had some budget, and that it at least should seem like there was a team working on it Big Rigs, Velvet Assassin, Duke Nukem Forever, Aliens Colonial Marines, Ride To Hell are all bad games, but at least they reach a category where they can be called games, not these 2 dollar garbadges that were slapped together by 1 person in 2 weeks with zero effort
