Glad you posted this, it reminds me to call my friends who served. There is a Vietnam Nam memorial in Apalachicola FL that features a bronze statue poured from the same three servicemen mould that stands on the mall in Washington DC. It is from the waist up mounted on granite. I encourage anyone who is in the area to check it out. I give thanks to our veterans!

I love the music choices lately. According to Charles dowding you could plant that whole pod with multiple plants in it & just pick the extra as green onions before the bulbs form. I would have planted all the plants & just thinned to desired spacing by picking as green/bunching onions or as they started forming small bulbs for fresh eating & used the wider spaced ones for storage. Im definitely going to try growing onion from seed this year tho. Maybe sow indoors feb 1st Also i think i said this before but find a recipe for cochinita pibil (pork butt) & make tacos or a sandwich out of it topping it witb copious amounts of pickled red onion & your life will be complete!

I seen that episode also he did mention they don't get quite as big but make up for it in quantity and he is trying to get the most out of his space because he sells his produce but if you want big onions then you will need to space them out more I tried doing it like that with a small patch last year the ones I spaced out were much bigger I will do another small patch this coming year for use as spring onions as he calls them tons of good information on his channel very knowledgeable Gardner I practice a lot of his style of gardening with little tweeks to suit my style

I believe that chianti red onion would be pronounced key-on'-tee, named for an Italian wine from the Chianti region of Tuscany. Raffia covered bottles. Drank my share of the stuff in my youth which is one reason for how I got this way. I grow late season leeks (120 days) and keep them trimmed in the flats to about 4 inches tall. I tell myself that they add extra pre-plant diameter but I've been doing it that way for so long it may now just be an old habit.
@LazyDogFarm

Thanks for the pronunciation Mark. I took quite a few Spanish classes back in the day, but zero Italian. As a result, my southern slang can butcher those words quite well.

I have a fourth issue with growing Onions, I become too impatient and end up eating them all before they fully mature. "I'm not growing Onions to sell anymore", I need to start thinking about a fishing trip down the road. Funny story, many years ago was on a fishing trip in April, had this roadside produce stand with Vidalias, Yee-Haa , I was going to be first in the Hood with them, got back home proud with my big bag of onions, went to my local Super Market and they had Vidalias out the Ying-Yang, and they were cheaper than what I paid.

I think I would have to have a serious talk with the wife's uncle about that row of pine trees shading the garden.My best ever onions were back when there was a couple chicken houses just down the road and they were cleaning them out and couldnt give the manure away.I went and got pickup load after pickup loads.I tilled it under and got to thinking and I get dangerous when I get to thinking.Well went back and started hauling loads of that chicken litter back and tilled it under again.Well that fall it was pretty bad smelling.By spring the smell was gone until I started tilling again.I planted my onions and all of that ammonia burned my onion down and I thought they were dead.Well after a few weeks they started coming back out.Those things grew crazy.they got waist high and the greens coming out of the bulb was about as big around as the small end of a baseball bat.The ground was so hot with ammonia that I couldnt hardly get stuff to even come up.All wasnt lost though as the spring rains and tilling finally let enough ammonia out and I had one fantastic garden that year.Bad thing was that they shut the chicken houses down.Nitrogen is a real key to growing good onions.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
That single row of pine trees in front of the garden is mine. I removed about 200 pine trees, but left those few. If they do become a shade problem eventually, I have no problem cutting them. The pine tree woods on the back side of the garden don't really cause an issue because that line runs E to W. I've got a good friend that has a bunch of chicken houses. I've overdone it with the chicken manure in the past as well. I added too much and my soil became somewhat anoxic, like the soil couldn't breathe. Once some of it finally fizzled out a little, we grew some great stuff. But you've definitely gotta be careful with it.

Well the second thing to worry about when planting onions certainly got me. I planted some of my onions two weeks ago, it was way too hot and they all died. I’m in zone 10a, so I’m waiting a little longer to plant the rest of them. I don’t cut off the tops because as Old Alabama Gardener (May he Rest In Peace 😢)said the bigger the greens the bigger the bulb! Onions are one of my favorite things to grow! I’m still eating on the ones I grew last year!

Hi Travis, I no longer trim my onions, the onion maggot fly gets into them faster and the maggots trash the onion bulb. Sprays can't get into the developing bulbs, and if they do then I'm not keen on eating the poisionuos residues...I cover all my onion family plants with extra fine insect netting, carrots too. No need for spraying then. Blessings.

Travis, I heard you mention teaching College biology, so many you can explain fertilizer to me. Common sense seems that if you used 10 10 10 but at half the prescribed dose it would be like using 5 5 5. Likewise doubling it would give you 20 20 20. I know it doesn't work that way but I don't understand why. Thank you.

@Peggy Jones. You have to consider the weight or amount of fertilizer you're using. If you were to apply 10 lbs of 10-10-10, you would be applying 1 actual lb of N, P, and K (0.1 x 10 = 1). If you wanted to apply 1 lb of N, P, and K but were using 5-5-5 fertilizer, you'd need 20 lbs (0.05 x 20 = 1). So yes, you're on the right track. Hope that helps.

I'm a northern grower so your onion varieties will be different than mine but I love to learn all the tricks of the trade. To be honest... other than a little bit of home made compost I've never fed my onions. lol Maybe this year I'll give it a try. I really love that you are doing trials. That's possibly my first love as a gardener. I love to trial everything. I have a very small garden space and the property has significant shade on 3 sides of the property. Last year I grew 159 different varieties of plants. 26 were types of tomatoes and of those I grew out 74 tomato plants. This year I have 27 melons to trial in my short season. This will be an extreme challenge because in order for those melons to become sweet they have to get enough sun. So far this year I'll be growing out 1,000 trees for my son and 130 varieties of seed to sow for myself and 2 trees that I bought yesterday to plant for my moma.

Your science background really enhances your video content. Knowing the biology helps anyone grow more-better vegetables. Question: Is there a "blue stuff" version of 15-0-0? I need easy, water soluble for my grow boxes. Since I'm a residential grower I don't use fish emulsion because the neighbor next to my side yard garden complains about the smell. My onion boxes were just cleaned and refilled with garden soil, a generous nurdle of 8-5-5, and a 3" compost frosting layer. I have the blue 20-20-20 on hand, but I need nitrogen. I will also want to use it next season on sweet corn. What would you recommend?
@LazyDogFarm

They're not blue, but you could do calcium nitrate (15.5-0-0) or chilean nitrate (15-0-2), which are both fast-acting nitrogen sources.

Sometimes I trim the onion tops to compensate for ripping the roots up separating the transplants (I buy 6 packs of onions starts, since I work at a nursery, and there are usually lots of plants in each cell). I'm not sure it really makes much difference. The un-trimmed ones droop for a few days, but then they recover and do fine.

Still might be planting at the wrong time. I read all sorts of conflicting information. The nurseries all have sets and starts now so it should be the correct time but some gardeners on local FB sights I'm on say plant in spring. So confusing. Zone 9b northern California. I also topped mine while a few weeks back and may top some again at planting. Also use biotone starter fertilizer at planting and will feed more often this time

@Lori Thornhill The west coast is a little tricky because you're in a similar zone due to the first and last frost date similarities, but the day length would be quite different. There are areas of Washington state, for example, that are considered zone 8b like us, but their day length wouldn't really work for the short-day onions we plant. I'd try to buy some of the local plants just to see how they do.

Texas Legend is another name for the Early Grano 502 Onion, which is different than the 1015 onion. They are similar, but 1015 is a more flattened onion while Texas Legend is more round.

Great video. Sorry for the very late comment. I just put my transplants in today. Can you advise as to a general fertilization schedule for onions please? For example, you say make darn sure you hit them with nitrogen because they are heavy feeders. My question is "when"? A couple of weeks after transplanting or do you go initially with a more balanced fertilizer to get them through the winter and then throw the nitrogen at them in the spring? Just a little clarification would help this rookie a great deal. Thanks very much. I hope you, and yours, have a great Thanksgiving.

In fact, was wondering if you could do the same(provide a fertilization schedule showing type and when) for all vegetable types that you might employ for planting in the container and in-ground plots(betting the container schedule might be different than the in-ground schedule)? Oh well. Just a thought. Would be very educational for a lot of us.

I'd be interested to hear the results of your onion experiment once you have some conclusive info. On the beets, keep in mind that beets have multigerm seeds, meaning each seed produces 2-3 plants. That could be why.

@FloridaPrepsteader I've heard of folks using store bought garlic. I've also heard that some of the store bought stuff is sprayed with something that inhibits sprouting. So if you were going the store bought route, I'd go to an organic grocery store to get something that hasn't been sprayed.

Hi--First time for me to try garlic. I'm in zone 9a or 8b. So I found a garlic called Texas Rose at Burpee's website. Ordered it and it's popping up quite well. Also had about a bulb and a half of store bought. Put the big cloves from those in the ground and they've popped up too. I did read though that sometimes store bought might introduce disease into your soil --- hope not. Hope you get something good that works for you. Jesus bless.

Hi Travis glad you’ve started planting short day onions. How many days from the transplant do you think it will be before main harvest, not including thinning for eating? I’ve never heard of cutting before planting onion transplants or the benefits unless it helps in regards to more sprouting hence more energy to the bulb on second stage. We have always planted the onion transplants on a 45 degree angle in the farrow and the sunlight lifts them quickly as they are drawn to the sunlight.
