My corn snake Spot grew from 18 inches to 6 ft in 20 years. He was in a long 90 gal tank and teased my cats. He would weave back and forth while the cats pawed the glass and then move to another side. He had them following him all around the tank for a good hour before going to his hide. He sneezed too. His entire body jumped when he did. Usually after digging through the bedding. He now lives with a herpetologist because l have severe arthritis and could no longer care for him properly. He is still alive after 23 years and healthy.

@@Zero_Is_Stopping_Time Would the authorities be able to tell it's a native species if it was a morph? I would think they should be encouraged. A morph means you either got it captive bread, you are breeding them yourself and may be able to help the species, or it's an anomaly and wouldn't have lasted long in the wild anyways. Also unlike non-natives there are no risks if it escapes (to the ecosystem at least; obviously there's usually a reason wild animals are the colors they are and the Animal it's self may not last long).

When purchasing ball pythons, be careful, because balls with a 'spider' gene (the one in the video has the gene in it I think) can have severe neurological issues which causes a head wobble and corkscrewing.
@abeg99592 жыл бұрын
What does that technically mean when owning a snake?
@dragonesseather2 жыл бұрын
@@abeg9959 When owning one with spider gene it means the disorientation can cause it to injure itself. Mostly it's when feeding; the snake will srike at the food, but because of the issues it can miss and strike the ground the walls of its enclosure, or I've even known ne to miss, flip, then bite and coil itself. Luckily it got saved. There are less severe cases, but in some of the worse ones it's absolutely aweful to see them try and scope just to have their head flailing around wildly...

Warning to everyone after seeing the last little clip: very controversial subject but spider morphs are notorious for having neurological issues. it's incredibly rare to find a spider morph fully lacking in neurological issues (and it's genetic so it's not curable like vitamin deficiencies are), if you have a spider, it really just depends on how severe. it can range to a head wobble to full balance issues to coordination issues (the latter can lead to incorrect strikes so they cant get their food and possibly latch to a hand or to themselves), they also might not be able to right themselves when upside down or accidentally drown themselves. You can make the decision on whether or not to buy this morph but it's rarely spoken about by the breeder and can lead to the snake needing to be re-homed if you aren't prepared and the issues get worse. Just make sure you do lots of research into your morphs because some (like the corn morph Emily showed) have some issues to them like bad immune systems, be prone to kinks, have neurological issues, or other health issues.
@lialaokami5 жыл бұрын
This is why you should always research a morph or breed of animal, just in general. I plan on getting a corn snake in the future, and I don't have any plans for a morph but if I stumble upon a morph that I decide I'd like, I'll do research on it BEFORE purchasing, just to be sure I don't unintentionally get an animal that has genetic issues, as I'm certain I wouldn't be ready for that quite yet, being as it will be my first snake.

The really sad thing about this is that giant snake channels and alot of breeders are trying to defend the breeding of these snakes after the recent ban of them in the UK.It's really sad to see alot of these "great" reptile channels defend these mutations that cripple the snake over profit.

Just be confident and be sure you're ready to house a pet. Think of it like getting a baby: they’re gonna need special food that costs, a lot of attention, health bills take a toll on your wallet even for the regular checkups twice a year, they need a large designated space for living, and they are a long term commitment. Do your research not just to prove yourself to your folks, but because a new life is in your hands.

I have heard others call them garden snakes. I've caught many (and released them in under an hour) and never been bitten. I like to look at them, but I wasn't allowed to keep them as a child, and just got in the habit of releasing them before I became an adult. The last one pooped on me; I'd caught it to show it to my son, and it was the first to poop on me and the last I even tried to catch! (laugh, I did, I still do) I remember when I was 10 putting one in a jar to show my brother and sister, but that is the only one I ever put into a container, and it was maybe for 5 minutes max.

Ugh, I've always thought that was so stupid! >_< I'm a Christian myself, yet I find that belief stupid and frustrating. First of all, that was ONE snake. One! Not every snake in existence! Secondly, Satan shapeshifted into a snake; he wasn't born one, so does it even count? I am so sorry your dad won't let you get a snake just because some guy shapeshifted into one for evil purposes. My parents are similar in a way: They watch a lot of those courtroom shows like Judge Judy and The People's Court, and a lot of dog attack related cases are about pit bulls. My older brother has been wanting a dog for a while, and the only dogs he seems to form that special connection with (you know, where you see an animal for adoption, and it just kind of clicks, and you know in your heart it's the right pet for you? Yeah, that feeling) are pit bulls. But my parents don't like that because of the stigma. Heck, one time, I told my mom that if she did actual research, she'd see that my brother and I were right, and you know what she said? "I don't want to do research." I said, "Okay, that's not a good attitude to have about ANYTHING." -_- *sigh* So, yeah. My brother can't get a dog partly because of some stigma. Literally the only good reason I can think of for our parents refusing to let us get a pit bull is because some insurance companies (including ours, I think) raise prices if you have a pit bull. But like I said, that's not the only reason they said no. Maybe try telling your dad the points I gave you above? You know, the ones about why associating all snakes with the Devil makes no logical sense? See how it goes? I mean, if you really want a snake, you may as well try, right?

Your videos are very informational and helpful. I was originally planning on buying a western hognose snake but now I’m planning on getting some of the starter snakes so then I can go from easy snakes to snakes more advanced throughout learning how to take care of them. Good progress on your channel! :D
@ArmednotTriggered6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call hoggies more advanced per say. In fact, they're on many beginner snake lists. That said, as an owner of a few snakes, there are two things to consider with hognoses: 1.) Their attitude. Hognoses are notorious for being dramatic and their temperament can turn on a dime. It's unlikely that they'll bite, but the false strikes and hissing can be a little unnerving if you're not expecting it. I actually use a hook to get my out, so I can gauge his mood rather than sticking my hand in to face the wrath. 😂 I wouldn't recommend them to be a first snake for kids for this reason because it might freak kids out. I usually just don't handle mine if he's having a "hissy fit." He'll level out in a day usually. 2.) The hunger strikes. Yes. They happen. Hognoses are picky. Our longest holdout was three months. That can also freak people out. This may require some creativity and tricks. We got our snake to eat using tuna juice for scenting and now he's eating like a champ. Those are really the only cons that I would say hognoses have. They're delightfully derpy and fun to watch. Their care isn't too difficult at all (in fact, they're easier than some of the snakes on the list) and they make a great pet. It's really just a matter of what you're looking for and how much research you do. It sounds like you'll be a great snake owner though regardless of what you choose! 😊
@antipyresis6 жыл бұрын
I've had a hognose snake as a starter snake and it was honestly perfectly fine. The only issue I have ever had with her was when she I found out she would get very stressed from me dangling food over her head and would stop trying to eat it if she missed even once. After I started putting the food on a lid in her cage she has been a perfect eater (and it helps keeping her from accidentally biting me as well). This along with their pickyness is why Snake Discovery seems to have taken them off their list for beginners, but tbh these are kind of the same cons as ball pythons, if anything ball pythons can be worse and more difficult to care for depending on the situation with their pickyness and hunger strikes and actually need a little more care into their humidity levels than hognoses do. They ARE quite a bit more docile though. In the end though I find hognoses are much more hardy than ball pythons if that is something you are more worried about. All in all though when deciding on a beginner snake, definitely put value into which easier snake you will like rather than which one is the easiest to take care of them all or you may end up disinvested. Also make sure to gather from a wide variety of opinions for beginner snakes! Only 5 choices from one source can be limiting. For example I don't think Snake Discovery really has any sand boas or house snakes, which are very popular beginner snakes otherwise.
@Wrknmom26 жыл бұрын
Wish I had seen this earlier! My daughter binge watched snake videos and researched and we thought a Hoggy would be a good start. She is cute but is feisty and freaked out my daughter but son will hold her at times. Had a food strike but realized was due to shed, ate a few times and now in strike again likely due to winter. May try to scent the food but hate to make her more picky!
@kekkelpenneypeckeltoot57006 жыл бұрын
That’s a good decision. While hognose snakes are small they can be difficult because of their attitudes and hunger striking. As a first or starter snake it definitely helps to have an easy going snake to learn the basic care without having to deal with a hognose hissy!

I called it too, then I was like... garter snakes will be on the list too. #5 Garter snakes, I was a little disappointed at being the bottom of the list, but with reasons, I didn't know their price went up so much.
@torunsmok58905 жыл бұрын
@@Pip8448 yea that one caught me by surprise too, I was leaning toward a black kingsnake or a garter from previous interactions, didn't realize how pricey tho! Still, the long term savings due to them being good eaters and taking basically whatever as long as it's enough sustenance... Could balance that out? And then you're left with just a fantastic fun to handle lil snek

@goldenassassin79955 жыл бұрын
Literally do nothing. Provide good temperatures, water and food. Nothing more. They never bite, they always eat, they difficulty die and become ill. They are very good at escaping though.
@amyelgato5 жыл бұрын
@@goldenassassin7995 Yeah no. You ALWAYS do a lot of of research before purchasing a snake. ALWAYS. Go by that rule and you'll kill your snake before it reaches max age. You need to be able to know behaviours and how to feed it and when and what kind of substrate and size tank to use. Its not near easy.
